Project-I Feasibility Report

From: Mohammad Hamza, FAST National University

To: Dr.Waseem Ikram, Director of FAST

Date: 8th April, 2019

Subject: Feasibility Report for Improving Server Technology

Purpose of the Report:

The purpose of the report is to improve the server technology and communication of FAST
Islamabad Campus. For this, we have to buy more efficient servers with less cost.

Problems due to Old Servers:

Following are the problems encountered due to use of old servers:

1. Slow and inefficient usage of Internet.

2. Our department has only one server running all the databases and websites.
3. Websites of our university like Slate is down as soon as many students connects to the
website.
4. Contacting Worldwide with old servers is slow and inefficient.

Criteria for New Servers:

For introducing new servers with better performance and low cost, following criteria was
considered:
1. Server Building:
We need a separate building which will only consists of huge servers. This will help
us to improve our communication with worldwide servers.

2. Separate Servers:
We need separate servers for different functions like a specialized server for
managing the database of the university.

3. Improved Website Server:

More servers need to be connect to the websites like Slate, Flex., so that majority of
the students can be entertained at one time without breakage of website link.

Vendors Contact:

1) IBM Technologies
2) Cisco Systems
3) DELL Computers

Criteria for Vendors:

1. Maintenance of Servers:
We need to purchase fast servers with no extra charges and with full support of
maintenance.

2. Warranties:
Warranty should be for at least 3 years with options for renewal.

3. Cost:
The total budgeted cost for buying new servers will be around $20000 dollars.

Vendors Evaluation:
1. IBM Technologies:
IBM has been in business since 1960s and it is being staffed by highly experienced
technicians and employees. A company named as Curvature is responsible for the
maintenance and support. IBM Technologies mostly focus on computer upgradation
and technology. IBM servers offer 12 months’ warranty for Maintenance Service
Upgrade and its servers cost up to $1500 dollars.

2. Cisco Systems:
Cisco has been in business since 1980s. Cisco mostly hires employees experienced
with networking. Their servers mainly focus on networking and virtualization.
Curvature also support Cisco server maintenance for models like Cisco UC blade and
rackmount servers. Cisco Systems mostly cost less than IBM. Their servers range
from $500-$1000 dollars.

3. DELL Computers:
DELL started its server production in 1980s with the invention of rack mounted
servers. DELL maintenance is supported by third party group named as ZION Tech
Group. DELL servers includes 3 years’ hardware warranty for servers costing up to
$5000 dollars. These servers are mostly reliable for storing databases of organization.

Cost Analysis:

1. Servers:
Our university needs up to 10-15 fast and complex servers. For example, 5 servers
will be used for storing databases and other 10 servers will be used for controlling
websites like Slate and Flex. This will cost you around $12000-$15000 dollars.

2. Server Building:
A separate building will be needed to accommodate 10-15 servers. Fast and efficient
wires will be used for fast communication. The whole system like installing the
servers, renovating the building etc., will cost you around $5000 dollars.

Conclusion:

According to your budget, we can purchase up to 15 servers with high-end speed and
performance. But you have to purchase servers from different vendors for different
functionality like, for managing fast communication and networking, you will need to
purchase Cisco servers. For long-lasting warranty and storing huge databases, DELL
Technologies is preferred.

Recommendations:

After purchasing new servers, you have to focus on making new software and websites with
more experienced performance and clients capacity.
