STCW Environment Related Training

for Seafarers - IMO STCW Courses
Marine Environment and Energy Efficient Operations Courses
for Seafarers, Management and Other Stakeholders

The operations of the IMO are of a

technical nature and seek to promote
safety of shipping and the
prevention of marine pollution. IMO
has adopted a wide range of
measures to prevent and control
pollution caused by ships and to
mitigate the effects of any damage to
the environment that may occur as a
result of maritime operations and
accidents.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) addresses

environmental issues and includes the control and prevention of ship-
source pollution covered by the MARPOL treaty, including oil, chemicals
carried in bulk, sewage, garbage and emissions from ships, including air
pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Other matters covered include
ballast water management, anti-fouling systems, ship recycling, pollution
preparedness and response, and identification of special areas and
particularly sensitive sea areas.

Education and international standards for seafarer training, along with

other measures have been instrumental in the continuous decline of
accidental oil and other pollution that has taken place over the years. Also
IMO has adopted a new chapter to MARPOL that includes a package of
mandatory technical and operational measures to reduce emissions from

Energy Efficient Operation of Ships (2 day course): This

course is designed to facilitate the delivery of training in order to
promote the energy-efficient operation of ships. The course
contributes to the IMO's environmental protection goals by
promulgating industry best practices, which reduce greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions and the negative impact of global shipping on
climate change. The objective of the course is to provide a common set
of knowledge and skills to all participants in order to enable them to
spread the information in their respective countries/organizations and
to promote the implementation of energy efficiency policies and
MARPOL Annex VI. This not an academic course but a hands-on
course with exercises, discussion of case studies and a number of
practical activities. The Instructors present the content of the modules
and guide the discussion of the most relevant issues. It is expected
that the participants will contribute substantially, by sharing their
knowledge and experiences. . This course is for Technical Director,
Superintendent, Fleet Manager, Chief Operating Officer, Chief
Engineer, Masters, and Nautical Officers.

combines two important aspects of modern shipping; care for the

marine environment and the importance of human performance. The
course is intended to give trainees knowledge of the importance and
diversity of the marine environment as well as understanding and
awareness of the impacts of shipping activities on the (marine)
environment. The course will stimulate personal responsibility to use
solutions that contribute to environmentally sound shipping. This
course is for deck officers and engineers with minimum watchkeeping
officer (engineer) capacity and also for electrical engineers. On
completion of this course you will receive Documentary Evidence.
