Q1 The local authority is planning to develop six zones centroids in the area of Johor Bahru.
The railway networks will be connected through these zones (Figure 1). The travel times
(minutes) between zones are estimated as at Figure 1. The trips (number of passengers)
from zone to zone are presented in Table 1.

12.6 min
5 1
3.3 7.2 5.0

4 4.8 6 8.4

2.2 5.0

4.3

7.8 min

FIGURE 1: Link Travel Times

TABLE 1: Trips (passengers) between Zones

From To zones
zone 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 0 500 650 200 600 650
2 600 0 625 350 650 600
3 650 525 0 600 675 800
4 300 350 700 0 500 200
5 600 550 675 400 0 350
6 750 600 900 200 450 0

From above information, you are asked to:

(a) Determine the minimum path from zone to other zones (zone 1 to other zones, zone
2 to other zones, etc.).
(10 marks)

(b) Determine the total trips for each link by using the all-or-nothing trip assignment
method.
(15 marks)

Q2 An industry area provides three housing complexes for the workers with the number of
3500, 4000 and 4500 workers. The area is divided into two different zones of working
places with the job opportunities as 4000 and 6000 jobs. Travel distance between zones
(minutes) and travel costs (RM) are provided in Table 2 and Table 3. Assume that the
constant relate to travel time and travel costs, b = 1.5

TABLE 2: Travel time (minutes)

From zone To zone R0
1 2
1 20 22 3500
2 17 19 4000
3 16 18 4500
Ed 4000 6000

From zone To zone R0

1 2.0 2.5 3500
2 1.5 1.6 4000
3 1.25 1.5 4500
Ed 4000 6000

From all information above, you are asked:

(a) Determine the actual accessibility and relative accessibility (‘normalised Hansen’) for the
housing complexes based on travel times consideration
(10 marks)

(b) Determine the actual accessibility and relative accessibility (‘normalised Hansen’)
for the housing complexes based on travel costs consideration
(10 marks)

(c) Briefly comments on the results ((a) and (b)) (5 marks)

Q3 The study of Modal Split has been done in Kluang area. The following information in
Table 4 shows the service performance of each three modes (private car, bus, train) with
the total trips of 5000 per day. Utility function for each mode is given as

With X1 as cost per trip (RM cents) and X2 is travel time (min). Service performance
is given in table below.

TABLE 4: Service performance

Cost per trip Travel time
Mode A
(RM cents) (min)
Private car -0.30 140 25
Bus -0.35 80 35
Train -0.40 90 40
From above information, you are asked to:
(a). Determine the share (proportion) of person-trips by each of three modes (private car,
bus and train) using the logit model.
(10 marks)

(b) If parking fee (for private car) is implemented as RM 2,- per trip and discount for train
ticket 15% per trip with reducing travel time as it become 35 minutes, you are asked to
determine the new share of person-trips (private car, bus and train).
(10 marks)
(c) Determine the total trips per day of each mode based on case/ question (b)
(5 marks)

Q4 A four-zone city has the following characteristics:

TABLE 5: Zone characteristics

Zone Total Existing Population Holding Capacity (acres)
1 2000 300
2 2500 280
3 9000 500
4 4500 350

The travel times (in minutes) are as follows:

TABLE 6: Travel times (minutes)

From i To j 1 2 3 4
1 5 10 12 15
2 10 4 9 20
3 12 9 3 14
4 15 20 14 6

An exponent of 2.2 can be used based on work done with other cities of the same size.
The city is likely to grow by 15% overall in 15 years. Based on all information above,
you are asked

(a) Determine accessibility index of each zone, Ai

(13 marks)
(b) Determine the development potential of each zone, Di
(6 marks)
(c) Determine the population allocated to each zone, Gi
(6 marks)
