Lesson Sequence
Timing Learning Activities
10 minutes Silent Reading: Students will read their novels silently as I take attendance and
get set up.
20 minutes Explain and distribute tea and naan: Explain to students why we are eating
naan and drinking tea. Call each row up individually to get a cup of tea and
piece of naan. Students will not pour tea – I will pour it for them.
Go over responses to Ch.1 worksheets (p.11, 12, and 13) as a class. Discuss as a
class.
30 minutes Ask a student to remind us what happened at the end of chapter 1.
Read Ch.2 as a class: I think I will read instead of asking for student volunteers
– though this may change. Many students in the class are very weak and/or
quiet readers. I fear other students might not hear/understand if I have
students read. Additionally, I will make frequent pauses to reflect, explain and
ask questions. I will go through the slides of the Power Point as important
info/vocabulary arises.
15 minutes Think-Pair-Share: Students will pair up and discuss/write notes on the
following question.
“Predict: How will father’s absence affect Parvana and her family? Keep in
mind the restrictions put on women under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.”
Each pair will share their predictions with the class.
If finished early: Students will begin working on the ch.2 worksheets in their
Breadwinner packages.
5 minutes Vocab trivia: Ask students to raise their hands to explain the meaning of the
following words.
Toshak
Chador
Burqa
Shalwar Kameez
Eid
Platform/Squat toilet
Naan
Landmine
