Teaching Philosophy

“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community better than
you found it.” -Marian Wright Edelman

From the moment we start kindergarten, education plays a vital role in our lives and is crucial to
improving ourselves and those around us. Education is a major component of professional
practice and with the ever-evolving healthcare system, the pharmacy profession is no
exception. My goal is to empower student pharmacists in a way that inspires them to become
representatives for improvement in our healthcare system. I hope to encourage each student
pharmacist to become a leader with ability and conviction and challenge them to improve our
profession by taking exceptional care of their future patients.

My path as a pharmacist was forged by educators who invested their time and energy to build
an environment of creativity and imagination that produced the foundation of life-long
learning. I strive to teach my students in an approachable and informative way by taking
complex topics and simplifying through multiple learning styles to achieve their understanding
and competency. I believe promoting active learning in the classroom by incorporating clinical
cases derived from my experiences can facilitate in-class discussion and improve student
knowledge of these topics. I hope to be an educator who provides the spark and helps students
think independently beyond the scope of the classroom and into the lives of their patients.

I believe in the power of an education that motivates students of all abilities, particularly those
who lose their motivation to learn because of the complexity of a topic. My experiences and
mentors have helped me understand the importance of creating an environment that focuses
on providing students a good foundation of clinical pharmacy regardless of their baseline
knowledge. I believe students are most receptive to this kind of environment when there is
mutual respect and communication in the student-educator relationship. I have had wonderful
success in my initial encounters as a pharmacy educator by setting clear expectations, providing
feedback, and being approachable to each student.

I am excited to continue my lifelong journey as a pharmacy educator. I am committed to being

engaged in the scholarship of teaching and providing an exceptional classroom and student
rotation experience. I am excited to mentor student pharmacists in a way that will empower
them to learn and improve the lives in their communities.
