1.0 PURPOSE:
This procedure is issued to provide guidelines for conducting Liquid penetrant test and
acceptance criteria.
2.0 SCOPE:
Covers penetrant test method As in E 165:
Visible penetrant test – Water washable – Type II – Method A
Visible penetrant test – Solvent removable - Type II – Method C
For Examination of castings & Welds.
4.1 Surface of the part examined to be free of dirt, grease, scale, welding flux, spatter, oil
etc.
Surface preparation by grinding, machining or other methods may be necessary prior
to testing. Surface preparation using shot/sand blasting is not acceptable.

6.1 After the specified penetrant dwell time has elapsed, any penetrant remaining on the
surface shall be removed using obsorbant cloth or paper.
6.2 For solvent removable penetrant, cloth damped with cleaner / remover shall be used to
remove excess penetrant.
6.3 For water washable penetrant,a coarse spray of water with less than 40Psi shall be used
to remove excess penetrant. Temperature of wash water b e within 10°C to 38°C.
6.4 Ensure that the rinsing is not vigorous and shall not remove the penetrant from the
discontinuity.
6.5 Parts are to be dried properly prior to application of developer. Drying can be
accomplished by normal evaporation or hot air circula tion.
When using hot air circulation, ensure p arts are not heated more than 52° C

8.0 INTERPRETATION:
8.1 Interpretation and evaluation has to be effected 10 minutes after the application of
developer, and maximum being 30 minutes.
8.2 For visible dye penetrant examination the minimum light intensity required on the test
surface shall be 1000 lux.
8.3 Record all relevant indication and their location as sketch or may be recorded as
photographs.
Linear Indication
Indication one with length in excess of 3 times the width.
Rounded indication
Indication those which are not defined as linear
Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re-examined to determine whether or not they are
relevant.
