JUDIT POLGAR

international interest at the age of 12, when at
the 1988 Thessaloniki Chess Olympiad she
scored 12.5 points out of 13 games. Together
with her two sisters they became female
Olympic Champions under Hungary's colours.
In 1991, at the age of 15, Judit won the
Super-Hungarian Men's Championship. When
she earned the male International Grandmaster
title, she was a month younger than Bobby
Fischer had been at the time of earning it.
In the early 1990s, she had practically burst
into the international vanguard of men. In 1992,
in Madrid, she came second behind Karpov, in
Hastings she finished joint first. In 1993 she
defeated ex world champion Boris Spassky in a
match. She finished in the first three in several
high-ranking grandmaster tournaments. In
1998. in a rapid chess match, she won against
Anatoly Karpov, FIDE World Champion of that
time. In the same year, being the first female
ever to do it, she won the USA Open
Championship.
6
In 2001, after stepping over to the new mil
lennium, she was awarded the World Chess
Oscar, offered to the most successful woman
chess player of the 2 0th century. In this year she
won two tournaments, and was runner-up in
Linares, behind Kasparov. In 2 002, as a member
of the 'World' team, she even defeated the
active male world champion in a game - a feat
that no female chess player besides her has ever
managed to accomplish before. In this same
year, in Benidorrn, she won a tournament ahead
of two world champions. At the Bled Chess
Olympiad she was the most successful player of
the silver medalist Hungarian men's selected
team.
It was on the January 2003 FIDE rating list
that she achieved the magic 2700. Soon she
became one of the strongest 10 chess players of
the world. In the meantime she endeavoured to
bring her life to perfection and live up to the
sacred obligation of women, motherhood, too.
With her husband, who is a veterinary surgeon,
7
they created a family home in the Hungarian
capital, Budapest. In 2004 their first child, a
boy. was born. A couple of months later, early
in 2005, she was invited to the eight-participant
World Championship Final to San Luis, where
"he did more palely, presumably on account of
the rather long interruption.
But Judil Polgar, with her abundant experi
ences and at the peak of her knowledge, is even
now persistently preparing for further fights.
The Princess of Chess, who, although only 30 at
the publication of this book, has already a most
succesful career behind her, plays in a wholly
original attacking style. Her spectacular games,
abounding in ideas, her amazing. sparkingly
original combinations thrill millions of chess
players all over the world.
Dear reader, take delight in all the beauties
of the royal game, and think together with the
strongest female chess player of the world!
