Time Lesson
10-15 minutes Students will be coming in from lunch. They will need time to settle
down and enter the classroom. They will be given 10-15 minutes to
read silently.

Introduction:

I will be asking the students which insect we have been learning

about in class. I will be introducing a three part activity we will be
doing (first: facts, second: creative writing, third: art). I will show
10 minutes an example of what they will be completing this week, and explain
that we will be doing part one of the activity today.

I will begin the lesson by showing the students a video about

butterflies. This will be a reminder of what we have covered so far
in class.
- Good afternoon boys and girls. Today we are going to be starting
a three part activity. But first, who can tell me which insect we
have been learning about? We have read a lot about butterflies,
and today we are going to be watching a video! This will help us
remember some of the things we have learned about butterflies in
the passed two weeks.

Development:
After the video, I will display several questions on the board for the
students to see. I will ask for volunteers to read the questions to the
30-35 minutes class. I will reinforce that I am choosing students who have been
doing good listening thus far. We will be going over what we know
about butterflies, as a class. Before the classroom discussion, I will
give the students a few minutes (2-3) to talk with the people at their
table about the questions displayed on the board. Once they have
had a chance to discuss, we will have the discussion as a class. I
will record their responses on the board.
- Alright. Now that you have had a chance to discuss with your
classmates, who can tell me something that we know about
butterflies?
- I will be looking for responses such as body parts, life cycle,
what they eat, etc…

Once we have created our “what we know” chart as a class, I will

explain the graphic organizer. The students will choose four facts
they have learned and write them on their sheet. They will be able
to choose which facts they would like to put in their book.
Once they have finished writing their facts, they will be expected to
colour the page to make it visually appealing. The final products
(steps1-3) will be put outside the classroom on the bulletin board.

Closure:
5 minutes Once the students have finished their worksheet and it has been
approved by myself, they will choose a piece of construction paper
to create the shell of their book. Before switching to math I will ask
a few students which facts they chose to put on their sheets.

* Throughout the lesson I will be reminding the children of my

expectations and using positive reinforcement to acknowledge the
students working well.

Differentiation:
- Students can vary the language and length of their sentences
according to their ability
- Certain students may write “key words” instead of an entire fact
- Facts will be available on the board for students to copy
- If students cannot write small enough they may write their
sentences on lined paper and glue it in their book.
- Students will work with their aids for additional support.
