[ www.matthews-training.co.uk EXAMPLE 1 PART 5 (LOCAL LTA) LEVEL 1 ASSESSMENT A region of localized corrosion has been found on a pressure vessel during a scheduled tumaround. The vessel and inspection data are provided below. The vessel was designed and constructed to the ASME B&PV Code, Section VIL, Division 1. Determine if the vessel is acceptable for the current MAWP using a Section 5 Level 1 Assessment. Vessel Data Design Conditions = 300 psi @ 650°F Inside Diameter = 96 inches Fabricated thickness = 1.25 inches Uniform Metal Loss = 0.10 inches FCA = 0.125 inches Material = SA516 Grade 70 Weld Joint Efficiency = 0.85 Inspection Data The grid and data used for the inspection are shown below. The distance from the tegion of local metal loss to the nearest structural discontinuity is 60 inches. Another region of local metal loss with a smaller amount of metal loss is located 16 inches from the region shown below. 1 Lenginndezal Circumferential Inspection Planes Circumferential Inspection cE Planes [ci | c2 [ca [cales[ola|alo Mi | 1as [ais | ias | ais [as | iis [ras | as] 1s LIS M2___| 1.15 | 087 | 0.75 | 070 | 0.76 | 0.80 | 085 | 094 | 1.15 0.70 M3__| 1.15,[ 0.81 | 0.82 | 0.84 | 0.62 | 0.45 | 068 | 0.90 | 1.15 0.45 | M4 1.15 | 0.85 | 0.88 | 0.81 | 0.84 | 0.83 | 0.90 | 0.91 | 1.15 O81 Ms [iis {10s [iis | ias fais] as [vis | 1as | is 1s peapetal | vas 0:81 | 0.75 | 0.70 | 062 | 0.45 | 065 | 0.90 | 1.15 Notes: 1 Spacing of thickness readings in longitudinal direction is ¥4 inch. 2. Spacing of thickness readings in circumferential direction is 1.0 inch. 3. The localized corrosion is located away from all weld seams. Page | of 3 Rev April 2010 www.matthews-training.co.uk Perform a Level 1 Assessment Step 1 — Determine the Critical Thickness Profiles(s) and the following parameters — the thickness readings for the critical inspection planes are indicated in the above table and figure. FCA=0.125" {ris not required for the analysis of an LTA as there is no crack/groove etc. Linas = 60” Step 2 — Calculate the minimum required thickness, thin, based on the current design pressure and temperature, Note that E = 1.0 since the LTA is remote from weld seams. R, = 48"+0.10"+0.125%=48.255" co. (R.= 0.317) 20.20 OK (tim ~ FCA = 0.450"-0,125"=0.325") > 0.10” OK Page 2 of 3 Rev April 2010 www matthews-training.co.uk (Lmsa = 60") > (1.8¥96"(1.02: 17.85") OK thas passed all these so we can proceed to the next step. Step 5— Check the criteria for a groove-like flaw. This step is not applicable because the region of localized metal loss is categorized as an LTA. Step 6 — Evaluate the longitudinal extent of the flaw. From the 4: R, graph 4 i pe , the longitudinal extent of the flaw is acceptable. Ry__ Rd Calculating the RSF using RSF = ‘Where M, = (1 + 0.48 27)°* M,= (1 + 0.48(0.432))°5 = 1.043, ws 0.317 2s = RSP aa 0.922 (RSF, =0.9) 043 Step 7 — Evaluate circumferential extent of the flaw using the Xe: R, graph he = 1.285c/ Sqrt (D t.) .285 x 4) / Sqrt(96 x 1.025) =5.14/9.92 eo =0.518 Plotting on the curve against Rt=0.317.....assume TSF =0.9 for simplicity ..shows the point is above the curve : SO: the circumferential extent of the flaw is acceptable. Hence it has passed a Part 5 (local thinning) level 1 assessment. Page 3 of 3 Rev April 2010
