REPORTS AND FINAL PAPERS

REPORT GUIDELINES

Refer to suggested topics on the syllabus or choose your own but you must clear your choice with me. It
can be about a play not covered in class or an expansion of our discussion on movements or groups such
as the Moscow Art Theater, the Group Theater, Expressionism, etc. It should have historical context so
avoid modern plays. It could be something as current as New York’s Off Broadway theater movement. It
could be about an early choreographer or lyricist. You could actually perform a scene or a dance as part
of your report. Use your imagination. Try to do something interesting.

Know your material. Avoid reading. If you’re reporting on a play avoid a simple and boring retelling of
the storyline.

The challenge is to inform and persuade the class of the importance of your topic in the evolution of
theater history.

Approximately 15 minutes in length. Use the technology but don’t let the technology dominate your
report. USE 3 SOURCES and include the sources on your handout (see below). Students must work
equally. If a team member is dropping the ball move on without him/her. I expect total honesty from
the groups on this issue.

Learn the technology in advance. If your group presents first arrive early and be ready to go.

The class must be the ideal audience. Pay attention, be respectful, DO NOT USE ANY OF YOUR DEVICES.
The presenters will hand out notes. You don’t have to take your own.

IMPORTANT: Prior to presenting, students must distribute to the class a one page handout that
highlights the contents of the report that students can use in preparing for the final exam. These
handouts must include your bibliography. In terms of length, use one of my handouts as your guide.

PAPER GUIDELINES AND DUE DATE

The paper will be a 4 page thesis. Research is not required but if you use sources make sure you cite
them. Choose a focused topic that will allow you to explore and conclude a strong point of view, like
whether or not Adolf caused his own downfall or Nora was justified in her decision to leave or Helen in
her decision not to leave. It could be about a character in a play, or a theme, or something about the
playwright. It could compare/contrast two characters in a play or a character from two separate plays.
But it must have a point of view. It must persuade.
It must also have a carefully organized beginning, middle, and end. The first paragraph should contain
your thesis and the organization your paper will follow to support your thesis and the last paragraph a
clear conclusion. Use the first person pronoun if you’d like.

Avoid a wishy-washy thesis like this one: I have serious objections to how Helen Manders handles her
domestic crises.

This is far stronger: Because of her overprotection of her son and excessive concern for public image,
Helen Manders exacerbates rather than resolves the family crisis that surrounds her.

Mechanics matter. Edit carefully.

Your paper will be due at the time of the final examination.
