Globally, lifetime prevalence rates are approximately 9.2% for suicidal

ideation and 2.7% for suicide attempt (Nock, 2008). Suicide ideation and

attempts are strongly predictive of suicide deaths; can result in negative

consequences such as injury, hospitalization, and loss of liberty; and exert a

financial burden of billions of dollars on society (CDC 2010; Nock, 2008; WHO,

2014).

Every suicide is a tragedy. According to an estimate from the World Health

Organization (WHO), over 800,000 people die due to suicide every year. This

corresponds to an age-standardized suicide rate of around 11.5 per 100,000

people – a figure equivalent to someone dying of suicide every 40 seconds (Lee,

Roser and Ospina, 2015)

However, according to the figures published by the Centers for Disease

Control, in the US there are roughly 25 attempts for each suicide death; and for

young adults aged 15-24 the ratio is much higher: there are approximately 100-

200 suicide attempts for each suicide death (CDC, 2012).

Changes in suicide rates over time also differ across peoples and places

(WHO, 2014). Between 2000 and 2012, age-standardized suicide rates

decreased worldwide by an average of 26%. However, this decrease was far

from uniform. For example, during this period suicide rates decreased by 69%

among women in Malta but increased by 416% among men in Cyprus.

Meaningful variability was even observed between neighboring countries.

Whereas Canada experienced an 11% decrease in suicide rates from 2000 to

2012, the United States experienced a 24% increase.

3

Moreover, it is said that a certain student who reported a loss of appetite

due to worry had approximately four times higher odds of suicidal ideation than

the students who are not worried (Muula, Kazembe, and Rudatsikira, 2007).

What is known about suicide in the Philippines is limited (Quintos, 2017).

The Philippines, with a population of approximately 90 million, is one of the most

populous countries in the Western Pacific, yet very little is known about the

epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behavior in the country (WHO, 2004).

As introduced by Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, Filipinos committing

or attempting suicide are getting younger over the years. The 2001 World Health

Report revealed that in 53 countries where complete data were available,

“suicide [turned out to be] a leading cause of death for young adults.”

Additionally, Prevalence of Suicide Ideation and Suicide Attempts among

the Filipino Youth showed that roughly one in every ten Filipino youth aged 15 to

27 has thought of ending their life through suicide (Quinto, 2017).

Salangad (2018) in the Philippines stated that there are 3.3 million

Filipinos or 3.3 percent of the total population in 2012 suffered from depressive

disorders. People who cannot handle it end up in committing suicide. In Region

1, statistics from the health department show that from January to August 2018,

there have been 108 reported suicide cases. Of which, 92 individuals or 85

percent were males and 16 (15 percent) were females.

Further, regional comparisons of suicide also show that the mountainous

Cordillera Administrative Region has the highest proportion of suicide ideation

4

but the National Capital Region has the highest in terms of suicide attempts

(Quinto, 2017).

However, in Davao City, the Commission on Population (POPCOM) in

Region II expressed concern over the rising cases of suicide attempts among the

youth in the Davao region. According to Bai Agnes Sampulna (2017) regional

director of the University OF Maryland Medical Center, more and more youth in

Davao are thinking of committing suicide. She explained that the reason why the

majority of the youth who thought or attempted suicide is because of family

problems or have suffered poverty and domestic abuse.

According to Mrs. Guinanas the Guidance Coordinator of Badas National

High School there are no technical reports about this case, however, there are

various posts on Facebook wherein students had wounded wrists who may be

seeking for attention or whatever they intended regardless of their act.

Consequently, if these case will happen the first thing that the Guidance

Counselor would do is to call the attention of the adviser and the parent, it could

be a parent’s conference. If the school can handle the situation the Guidance

Counselors would talk and assess the child. In contrast, if the situation is

arduous, they would refer the student to the professional psychologists of CSWD

who can handle the situation and the students better.

In the aforementioned cases of youth suicide, it shows that it is one of the

leading causes of death and has been increasing. However, during the past few

years, attempting suicide among young adult has emerged as a rampant issue in
5

our society. Certainly, there had been a report regarding about the suicide cases

that have happened on Mati National Comprehensive High School (MNCHS) and

we researcher of Badas National High School are moved that this may happen to

our school. Consequently, there had been no study about attempting suicide,

particularly in Badas National High School. So we come up to this research study

because we want to know their reasons that urge them to attempt suicide as well

as their realization after doing such an act.

Through this study, if everyone is informed about this adverse deed then

we believed that we can lessen its cases. Besides, it will make them realize that

difficulties and dilemmas are never permanent thus attempting suicide is not a

solution to it.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore what is

attempting suicide towards the participants who were involved. At this stage of

this research, we identified the various reasons behind the act of students who

attempted suicide, as well as their realizations after attempting self-murder.

6

Research Questions

This part has the following questions:

Central Question: What are the lived experiences of the students who

attempt suicide?

Sub-questions

1. What is a suicide attempt for the participants?

2. What are their reasons to attempt suicide?

3. What are their realizations after attempting suicide?

Scope and Limitations

The scope of this study was to seek and get reliable information

from our participants on their struggles in life that will lead them to attempt

suicide. We had 6 participants who answered the given questions. These

participants were studying at Badas National High School. This study was

conducted for 6 months, it started in the month of November 2018 and will be

ended in March 2019 at Badas National High School. The research was limited

to what are the views and struggles as well as the realization of the students who

attempted suicide.
7

Definition of Terms

This section contains the operational definition of terms that used it based

on how they it used in their study.

Suicide – it is the act of ending one’s own life consequent to the reason that

triggers the person involved to commit this act

Attempting suicide – it is the failed attempt to kill one's own life as such this is

the focus of our study, as it is a rampant issue on our society

Reasons – these are the factors that we researcher shall discover from our

participants on what are the things that push them to attempt suicide

Students – they are the ones who will serve as the participants of this study

since we researcher conducted our study inside the school premises

Realization – serves as the aftermath after attempting suicide or the

comprehension of the person involved after doing such an act

Significance of the Study

This research is important and beneficial to the following:

To the students – In order for them to be informed on what are the reasons that

can lead the person to attempt self-murder. For the participants to know that

attempting suicide is not the solution to their dilemmas.

To the parents – who must be there always beside their children to guide and

consult them about their problems, also to enlighten the minds of their children

and avoid attempting suicide.

8

To the class advisers – who serves as the second parents of the students. With

this, advisers will know and discover the struggles faced by the students.

Afterward, the advisers will find ways and understand the situation of their

students because the guidance of some parents is not enough.

To the guidance office –in order for them to be aware of the cases of

attempting suicide inside the school as well as for them to have a plan to help the

students get rid of the thought on attempting suicide.

Theoretical Lens

This section shows the theories of suicide that covers diverse

perspectives including cognitive-behavioral model (Karthick and Barwa, 2017).

Beck Cognitive Models

Beck (2006) and his colleagues proposed that the diathesis for depressive

and suicidal symptoms consists of cognitive self-schemas that contain certain

negative beliefs, including dysfunctional attitudes and cognitive distortions.

Hopelessness plays a key role in Beck's model, along with the negative triad of

negative thoughts about oneself, others, and the future.

Therefore with this theory of Cognitive Models, will serve as a major

contribution to us researchers to know if hopelessness really affects a person's

mind and behavior or an individual who perceives negative thought will lead to

the suicide attempt. Through this theory, we will have a better understanding of

the causal mechanism that will urge an individual to attempt suicide.

9
10

Detailed discussions of different methods for characterizing self-

destructive considerations and conduct, alongside suggested definitions, were

most as of late offered by a recognized board of specialists in an original paper

by Silverman and partners (Silverman, Berman, Sanddal, O'Carroll, and Joiner,

2007). The accompanying definitions are educated by this paper

Suicidal Behaviors

Suicide is a deliberate act of self-harm with at least some intent to die that

results in death. Suicide attempt is a deliberate act of self-harm with at least

some intent to die that does not result in death. Such acts have a wide range of

medical seriousness.

Suicidal Thoughts

Suicidal ideations are thoughts of attempting suicide. Such thoughts have

a wide range of specificity, intensity, and frequency. Suicide plans are a severe

form of suicidal ideation that includes identifying a method or scenario to attempt

suicide.

Reasons for Attempting Suicide

Risk Factors for Suicide

Maris, Berman, and Silverman (2000) list various huge hazard factors

identified with suicide. A portion of these components are more notable in certain

people than in others, yet all can add to the danger of suicide. Different
11

specialists accentuate distinctive hazard factors. Most people who endeavor or

pass on by suicide have various different components.

The primary factor is having mental confusion rates of real burdensome

turmoil, bipolar confusion, and schizophrenia are high among the individuals who

bite the dust by suicide. Furthermore, self-destructive ideation the more explicit

and cement the person's reasoning is and the more nitty gritty the arrangement,

the more probable the individual is to pass on inevitably by suicide. Nonetheless,

the lethality of technique picked, individuals utilizing strategies for higher lethality

are bound to bite the dust by suicide. As a rule, ladies utilize less deadly

strategies than men. Likewise, access to deadly methods. Incorporates both gun

access in the all-inclusive community and access to means and an open door for

hanging in foundations.

In addition, relatives of individuals who attempt or die by suicide are more

likely to attempt or die by suicide than those without a relative who is or was

suicidal (Moscicki, 2001). Next factor is a social disconnection, living alone or

having no dear companions are markers for social detachment. Disconnection

additionally makes it more outlandish that a suicide endeavor will be hindered or

that a person who has made an endeavor will get life-sparing medicinal

consideration. All things considered, emotional relational components, as saw

depression, a conviction that one doesn't have a place, and an impression of

being a weight on others are possibly applicable factors.

12

Warning Signs and Precipitating Events

Researchers have noticed that there is little consistency in the notice signs

recorded in materials conveyed to educators, essential consideration suppliers,

and crosswise over sites, as these rundowns are not founded on a lot of clear

exact rules (Simon, 2006). Nor is it clear whether every single cautioning sign is

similarly notable.

Rudd and partners (2006) investigated the qualification between a hazard

factor for suicide and a notice sign. Hazard factors, for example, sadness, are

progressively static and suffering and recommend chance over longer

timeframes, of a year or a lifetime. Cautioning signs, notwithstanding, infer close

term or impending danger and are roundabout and variable (compromising to

execute self, looking for a weapon).

Investigators and clinicians have moreover perceived events that quicken

a suicide try in clients. Hendin, Maltsberger, Lipschitz, Haas, and Kyle (2001)

separated 26 cases of suicide introduced by the guides who were treating them

at the period of their downfalls. Fourteen of these patients had co-happening

substance use issue, and nine were successfully abusing substances.

In this examination, the researchers perceived a quickening event that

was furthermore associated with something like one extraordinary loaded with

inclination states (other than gloom) in light of the event, and somewhere around

one of three social signs (checking talk or exercises proposing suicide,

disintegrating in working, and a development in alcohol abuse). The investigators

13

saw that the extended alcohol abuse had every one of the reserves of being a

technique for administering growing apprehension before the suicide.

It is very much archived that distressing life occasions regularly happen

before suicide endeavors and suicide. In investigations of suicide, people with

substance use issue are bound to have accomplice relationship interruptions,

lawful challenges, and business-related troubles contrasted and suicide

decedents without substance-related issues (Heikkinen et al., 1994; Rich,

Fowler, Fogarty, and Young, 1988).

Among individuals who misuse substances, disturbances of relational

connections, regularly accomplice connections (e.g., conjugal partition,

separation with a mate) are the most widely recognized occasions going before

suicide (Duberstein, Conwell, and Caine 1993; Heikkinen et al., 1994; Murphy

Armstrong, Hermele, Fischer, and Clendenin, 1979; Rich et al., 1988).

Information, for example, these have propelled models of suicide that underline

the job of relational components (Conner, McCloskey, and Duberstein, in press;

Joiner, 2005).

The Role of Substance Use in Suicidal Behavior

Wilcox (2004) directed an exhaustive factual investigation of information

from studies led in the United States and globally that contained both data on

individuals who misuse substances and data on their mortality. This investigation

refreshed the substance use area of a definite audit of suicide contemplates by

Harris and Barraclough (1997) by including reports distributed after Harris and
14

Barraclough's survey and by more completely testing substance misuse look into

diaries.

The examination empowered the scientists to contrast hazard for suicide

in people and liquor reliance, narcotic reliance, infusion tranquilize use and

blended medication use disorders with hazard for suicide among people in the

all-inclusive community. The investigation demonstrated that individuals with

substance use issue in every one of these gatherings were at nine-overlap more

serious hazard for suicide or higher, with the dimension of hazard differing to

some degree contingent upon the substance.

There was not adequate data on other substance use populaces (e.g.,

cocaine, cannabis, methamphetamine) to appraise chance for suicide-related

with these substances. The investigation (Wilcox et al., 2004) indicated

absolutely that individuals being treated for substance use issue are at

enormously raised hazard for suicide.

Alcohol

The Wilcox (2004) survey assessed that people with liquor reliance are at

almost multiple times more serious hazard for suicide contrasted and the all-

inclusive community. National study results have revealed that liquor reliance

gives 4.6 occasions more serious hazard for self-destructive ideation and 6.5

occasions more serious hazard for endeavored suicide contrasted and people

not subject to liquor (Kessler et al., 1999). This information underscores that

suicide aversion endeavors must concentrate on liquor use issue.

15

Despite the fact that suicide regularly happens amid times of drinking among

people with liquor use issue, suicide may likewise happen while abstinent from

liquor. At the point when this happens, another psychological instability is about

constantly included, regularly real despondency (Conner, Duberstein, Conwell,

Herrmann, Cox, Barrington, et al., 2000).

Notwithstanding ceaseless liquor use and its outcomes, intense utilization

of liquor is likewise firmly involved in self-destructive conduct. A survey of studies

containing information on liquor use at the season of suicide endeavors and

suicide passings (Cherpitel, Borges, and Wilcox, 2004) evaluated that 37 percent

of suicide decedents (run 10– 69 percent) and 40 percent of individuals who

endeavor suicide (go 10– 73 percent) had been drinking at the season of the

demonstration.

Heroin

An exhaustive audit of universal investigations (Wilcox et al., 2004)

demonstrated that treated people who use infusion medications and narcotics

are at 10 to multiple times more serious hazard for suicide contrasted and the

overall public. The examinations evaluated were made essentially out of

individuals who utilized heroin, and underscore the high hazard for suicide in this

populace.

Individuals with heroin use issue are likewise at high hazard for

endeavored suicide, with investigations of individuals who had been treated for

heroin use appearing somewhere in the range of 17 and 47 percent of this

16

populace have made a lifetime suicide endeavor (Darke, Williamson, Ross, and

Teesson, 2005).

Cocaine

An examination that looked at people in substance misuse treatment for

cocaine reliance with and without a background marked by suicide endeavors

demonstrated that the individuals who endeavored suicide were bound to

indicate burdensome side effects, have a past filled with youth misuse, have co-

happening reliance on liquor and sedatives, show more prominent threatening

vibe, and be female (Roy, 2001).

Aggression, Impulsiveness, and Impulsive Aggression

Longstanding speculation is that rash hostility (additionally regularly

alluded to as responsive animosity) is a powerful hazard factor for self-

destructive conduct (Conner, Duberstein, Conwell, and Caine, 2003c; Turecki,

2005). People inclined to this sort of animosity experience passionate

hyperarousal including outrage and nervousness, have poor regulation of

physiological excitement and demonstrate lost conduct control (Barratt, 1991),

qualities that are attempted to depict an intensely self-destructive state

(Shneidman, 1985).

Comparable discoveries have been accounted for in investigations of

suicide endeavors. For instance, a powerful examination that demonstrated that

a proportion of "animosity/impulsivity," made by joining sizes of hostility and lack

of caution, was an intense connect of suicide endeavors in a high-chance clinical

17

example (Mann et al., 1999). These reports and different investigations of

hostility, lack caution, and related scales in suicide and endeavored suicide are

condensed in an ongoing survey (Brezo, Paris and Turecki, 2006).

Other broadly referred to prove originates from neurobiological

examinations that have reliably discovered that low dimensions of the synapse

serotonin are related to hasty forceful practices. These investigations have been

deciphered to recommend that suicide and imprudent forceful acts are firmly

related practices that are appearances of serotonergic dysregulation (Coccaro,

1992; Mann, 2003; Shaikh, De Lanerolle, and Siegel, 1997; Turecki 2005).

The Role of Trauma and Abuse

Posttraumatic stress issue (PTSD) and co-happening substance use issue

have been connected with self-destructive conduct in various examinations.

Some exploration inspecting the connections between physical or sexual

maltreatment, substance misuse, and self-destructive conduct proposes that the

connections contrast in people. Be that as it May, Rossow and Lauritzen's (2001)

far-reaching study recommends that with increasingly serious youth stress and

injury, sexual orientation contrasts in self-destructive conduct vanish.

Benda's (2005) investigation of self-destructive considerations and

practices among veterans who were destitute and manhandled substances

additionally demonstrated a relationship with sexual maltreatment. Among the

310 ladies studied, self-destructive ideation and endeavors were most intently
18

connected with current sexual maltreatment, despite the fact that youth sexual

and physical maltreatment likewise achieved noteworthiness.

Among the men, be that as it may, various different factors were

additionally prescient of suicidality, including substance misuse, animosity,

intellectual issue (thoughts of reference, befuddled reasoning, memory

misfortune), and battle-related PTSD. The information proposes that youngster

misuse is progressively prescient of suicidality among female veterans, though,

among male veterans, different factors may play an equivalent or more

noteworthy job.

Women, Trauma, Substance Abuse, and Suicide

Jarvis and Copeland (1997) noticed the consolidated impact of substance

reliance and history of youth sexual maltreatment (CSA) in adding to the

probability of a lady's endeavoring suicide. Of the ladies in substance misuse

treatment, 70 percent of those with a background marked by CSA had

endeavored suicide, while just 36 percent of the individuals who had no such

history endeavored suicide.

Likewise, the individuals who additionally had encountered grown-up

physical maltreatment or who had encountered a more prominent number of

lifetime injuries demonstrated higher chances of endeavoring suicide. An

examination of ladies with PTSD and substance use issue found that 32.3

percent had made a suicide endeavor or self-hurt in the previous 3 months

(Harned, Najavits, and Weiss, 2006).

19

Men, Trauma, Substance Abuse, and Suicide

Benda (2003) analyzed data from 600 male Vietnam veterans who were

homeless and who were admitted for substance abuse treatment (30.7 percent

had attempted suicide) and found that the factors that most highly discriminated

between those who attempted suicide and the other veterans were number of

psychiatric hospitalizations, disturbing thoughts, depression, confused thinking,

and sexual abuse. Alternatively, the factors that most strongly associated with an

absence of suicidality were self-efficacy, resilience, religiosity, employment, and

social support, suggesting that these variables serve as protective factors.

Realization after Attempting Suicide

You have day-to-day contact with many young people, some of whom

have problems that could result in serious injury or even death by their own hand.

You are therefore able to observe students’ behavior and act when you suspect a

student may be at risk of self-harm. Teachers can also play an active role in

suicide prevention by fostering the emotional well-being of all students, not just

those already at high risk.

Teachers are well positioned to promote a feeling of connectedness and

belonging in the school community. According to the CDC (2009), school

connectedness is the belief by students that adults and peers in the school care

about them as individuals as well as about their learning. Connectedness is an

important factor in improving academic achievement and healthy behaviors. and

it is also specifically related to reductions in suicidal thoughts and attempts.

Shank (2002) defines qualitative research as “a form of systematic

empirical inquiry into meaning”. By systematic he means “planned, ordered and

public”, following rules agreed upon by members of the qualitative research

community. By empirical, he means that this type of inquiry is grounded in the

world of experience. Inquiry into meaning says researchers try to understand

how are the participants make sense of their experience.

According to Creswell (2013) phenomenology is an approach to qualitative

research that focuses on the commonality of a lived experience within a

particular group. The fundamental goal of the approach is to arrive at a

description of the nature of the particular phenomenon. Hence, this qualitative

research is a phenomenological study as it utilizes the methodology about the

lived experiences of the participants in particular of their reasons for attempting

suicide and their realization after doing such an act.

Research Participants

In this phenomenological study, we would have 6 participants who had

experienced attempting suicide. Since according to Creswell (1998) for

phenomenological studies he recommended 5 – 25 and Morse (1994) suggests

at least six participants. This recommendation can help us researcher estimate

how many participants we will need, the required number of participants should

depend on when saturation is reached.

As a qualitative researcher, it is our goal to attain saturation stage.

Saturation often occurs when adding more participants to the study, Glaser, and
22

Strauss (1996) recommend the concept of saturation for achieving an

appropriate sample size in qualitative studies.

Sampling is the process of selecting the people with whom to conduct

research. In qualitative research, individuals are selected to participate based on

their first-hand experience of a phenomenon of interest (Streubert & Carpenter,

1999).

In addition, there are various types of sampling methods, including

nonprobability sampling and probability sampling (Connaway & Powel, 2010). In

our research study, we use nonprobability sampling, in the form of judgmental

sampling and snowball sampling. According to Crossman (2018), judgmental

sampling is a nonprobability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a

population and the objective of the study

Judgmental sampling focuses on particular characteristics of a population

that is of interest, in our study we will look for a participant that we already know

that person attempted suicide. It is helpful to us researcher as it effective to the

limited number of participants possess the trait that we researcher is interested in

especially to those students who attempted suicide.

Further, our participants are the students of Badas National High School

particularly the Grade 10 and Senior High School students. These students use

various forms and ways to attempt suicide.

23

Locale of the study

In this part of the research will focus on where we conducted our study. In

this study, the participants had taken from Badas National High School. The said

school is about 20,000 square meters, and as perceived in the school, it has an

only a small population to accommodate since Junior High School have 572

students and Senior High School with 150 students. It is located at Camansi,

Barangay Badas, Mati City.

Role of the Researchers

The role of the researcher in qualitative research is to attempt to access

the thoughts and feelings of the studied participants. This is not an easy task, as

it involves asking people to talk about things that may be very personal to them.

Sometimes the experiences being explored are fresh in the participant’s mind,

whereas on other occasions reliving past experiences may be difficult (Sutton

and Austin, 2015).

However, we as the researchers collected our data through an interview,

and our primary responsibility is to record all the participants answer with the use

of a cellphone. After the data are being collected, the second role of the

researchers is to transcribe the data. Further, we translate it to English since the

participant's data are in vernacular form. Moreover, we encode the transcripts

with the use of laptops and computer. However, we researchers are new to
24

qualitative research should thus we sought advice from an experienced

qualitative researcher before embarking on our study.

Data sources

In the conduct of research, we researchers rely on primary data sources.

According to Kothari (1985), primary data is a piece of original information

collected for the first time. As such, both Drew (1980) and Kothari (1985) regard

questionnaires, interviews and direct observations as the most important means

of data collecting.

Certainly, we will use primary data collection as we use the personal

interview to gather data. In this study, we focus on a primary data as such it is

an original data from our participants, that is, one in which the data are collected

first-hand by the researcher for a specific research purpose or project.

Data Collection

This part of the study contains the data collection, that plays a very crucial

role in the research study because it will be the process and strategies on how

the researchers are going to collect data and information for the study.

Data are usually collected through qualitative methods (Hawe, Degeling,

and Hall, 1990). Qualitative approaches aim to address the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of a

program and tend to use unstructured methods of data collection to fully explore

the topic. Similarly, in this study uses unstructured data collection.

25

All in all, it will be a traditional or modern type of interview "it is a

conversation with a purpose" that gives direction to the questions answer activity

between the interviewer and the interviewee (Barbie, 2014 & Rubin, 2011).

Especially, a one-on-one in-depth interview. The one-on-one interview is a

valuable method of gaining insights into people's perception, understanding, and

experiences of a given phenomenon (Ryan, Coughlan and Cronin, 2014).

In conducting the interview, first we asked permission from our adviser,

Mr. Miguel H. Panugan Jr. through writing a letter and after that, we asked

permission to the school’s Principal Mrs. Lolita R. Yara that we would conduct a

study inside the school. Next, we asked permission through an informed letter to

the selected participants for their time and cooperation for the progression of the

study. Lastly, would be the discussion of the research to the participants and the

interview proper following.

Data Analysis

This part of the study is the role of research, and that is to analyze the

data that have been collected. According to Moore & McCabe (2005), this is the

type of research whereby data gathered is categorized in themes and sub-

themes, so as to be able to be comparable.

We researchers conducted an interview with our chosen participants and

the data have been audio-recorded. After the data is collected these were
26

transcribed by the researchers to convert the spoken word to the written word to

facilitate analysis.

All audio recordings were transcribed in verbatim, regardless of how

intelligible the transcript may be when it is read back. Moreover, if the

participant's answer was in vernacular, it was translated. Once all of the research

interviews had been transcribed and checked, we began coding. Coding refers to

the identification of topics, issues, similarities, and differences that are revealed

through the participants' narratives and interpreted by the researcher. At this

stage, saturation was reached (Sutton and Austin, 2015).

Next, we generated the theme. Theming refers to the drawing together of

codes from one or more transcripts to present the findings of qualitative research

in a coherent and meaningful way. The thematic analysis established a

meaningful pattern with six phases; familiarization the data, generating initial

codes, searching among the themes, defining and having themes and producing

the final theme (Sutton and Austin, 2015).

Trustworthiness

Trustworthiness the following principles, as described by Lincoln and

Guba (1985), was applied to ensure the trustworthiness of this study. The first

credibility is referred to as confidence in the truth (Polit & Beck, 2008). This was

ensured by accurately describing and interpreting the information provided by the

27

participants in this study – data collection method of unstructured interviews,

validated the truth and confirmed the results as described in chapter 4.

Second, confirmability referring to objectivity or neutrality of the data and

interpretations is the potential for congruence between two or more independent

people about the data’s accuracy, relevance, or meaning (Polit & Beck,

2008:539). Confirmability was attaining through the involvement of an

experienced supervisor who reviewed all data, documents, and results

independently. These ensure that the findings are the product of the focus of the

study and not the biases of the researcher (Babbie & Mouton, 2006). Member

checking was done with each participant after individual interviews, to validate

the transcribed data.

Third, transferability according to De Vos et al. (2005), generalizing

findings in qualitative research may be problematic but is possible if researchers

could show that the study was guided by concepts, models and the use of

multiple data collection methods. The conceptual framework used for this study

was Maslow (1968).

Lastly, dependability, according to Babbie and Mouton (2006),

dependability refers to the stability of data. If this study were to be repeated with

the same or similar respondents in the same or similar context, its findings would

be similar. In this study, all interviews were conducted in the same manner using

an interview guide. The data were transcribed and analyzed after each interview

and verified by a fellow researcher and an expert in qualitative research. In

addition, as researchers, we must be trustworthy in conducting our research so

28

that the information we have gathered is reliable and has validity to make our

research true and real.

Ethical Considerations

The researcher had a moral obligation to strictly consider the rights of the

informants who were expected to provide this knowledge (Streubert & Carpenter

1999). The researcher considered it very important to establish trust between the

informants and her and to respect them as autonomous beings thus enabling

them to make sound decisions (Burns & Grove 1998; Polit & Hungler 1999

Streubert & Carpenter, 1999).

We, as researchers obtained permission to conduct the study from the

relevant authorities and respected the informants' rights to confidentiality,

anonymity, and privacy.

Permission to conduct the study. The request for permission to conduct

the study was forwarded to the school’s Principal Mrs. Lolita R. Yara. Written

permission obtained from the school, the Badas National High School. Written

permission was also sought from informants for the Interviews (Lobiondo-Wood

& Haber 1997).

Confidentiality and anonymity. Confidentiality protects participants in a

study so that their individual identities cannot link to the information that they

provide and will not be publicly divulged (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber 1997; Polit &

Hungler 1995). Confidentiality means that any information that the informants

divulge is not made public or available to others. Anonymity is the protection of

29

the informants in a study so that even the researcher cannot link the subject with

the information provided (Lobiondo-Wood & Haber 1997; Polit & Hungler 1998).

The anonymity of a person or an institution is protected by making it impossible

to link aspects of data to a specific person or institution. Confidentiality and

anonymity were guaranteed by ensuring that the data obtained were used in

such a way that no one other than the researcher knew the source (Behi & Nolan

1995). This means that the names of the informants were not used to identify the

data.

According to Polit and Hungler (1999), a promise of confidentiality to

informants is a guarantee that any information the informants provide will not be

publicly reported or made accessible to parties other than those involved in the

research.

Privacy. Privacy refers to the right that all information collected in the

course of the study will be kept in strictest confidence (Poilt & Hungler 1999).

Privacy means that individuals can behave or think without interference nor may

possible private behavior be used to embarrass or demean them later. In this

study, the researcher ensured that the participants displayed any type of

behavior in response to teenage pregnancy without any interference. The

researcher only observed these behaviors. The participants were made aware of

their involvement in the study when they were asked to sign a consent form

requesting them to be interviewed after delivery (Polit & Hungler 1999).

Escape from Problems in life. The participants who are students define

attempting suicide as a result of having lots of problems. We discovered that

students depict suicide as access to escape from their problems. Furthermore,

we found out that the students perceive attempting suicide as a sensation when

you can't understand the situation, in a manner of problems happened at the

same time. Aside from that, attempting suicide is an event wherein an individual

intent to end his own life.

In our in-depth interview it was revealed to us that the students are

facing plenty of problems as expressed with the following

comments:

Suicide attempt for me is when you plan to kill yourself maybe

because of your problems in life. (Para sakoa ang pagsulay ug
hikog is kanang nagbalak kag pakamatay sa imohang sarili, kay
maybe because of your problems in life. P2)
Attempting suicide for me is when a person is depressed and they
have experienced too much problem which urges them to attempt
suicide.
tao is subrang depressed gani kanang murag iyang problema na
over na. P4)
Attempting suicide is a way to escape all of your problems given by
the people around you.
It is the sensibility when you can’t understand what’s happening in
your life, wherein problems happened concurrently. When problems
are accumulated you’ll definitely think on attempting suicide. (Yun
So dahil diyan naiipon yung mga
problema, iba na yung naiisip mo talagang magpakamatay. P1)
32

Killing one’s own life. The second theme under feelings of students

towards attempting suicide is the thought of killing one’s own life. We learned

during the interview that the students intended to kill their own selves yet they are

afraid to leave their loved ones behind. Further, students attempt suicide

because they thought that doing this act will solve their problems. We

researchers learned that the students treasure their loved ones the most that

made them not to continue committing suicide. Thus like our participants, we

researcher value our loved ones and killing ourselves is not the solution to our

problem.

Attempting suicide for me is to kill yourself in the means of you'll

surely die. (Sa akoa kaning to attempt suicide is to kill yourself,
kaning patyon nimo imong sarili. P3)
Suicide attempt for me is to try to kill yourself, maybe because of
your problems in life. (Para sakoa ang pagsulay ug hikog is kanang
nagbalak kag pakamatay sa imohang sarili, maybe because of your
problems in life. P2)
Attempting suicide for me is an event which I encounter or had
experienced, it is the attempt of killing one’s own life.
P5)

Students define suicide attempt on various meaning based on their

experiences. As they say, they attempt to kill their own life because of their

problems. In fact, we cannot judge them as we don’t know how hard was their

situation that urged them to attempt suicide. Problems faced by the students

served as the risk factor that leads them to suicidal behavior as they think that it’s

the only solution to solve their problems or to escape the hardship they been

through. In a study conducted by Sacoor (1991) in Johannesburg, among black

33

adolescent girls, it was found that feelings of self-worth, school difficulties,

feelings of separation anxiety and inability to solve problems were all causes for

attempted suicide. Clearly, the results of the interviews show that the students

would attempt suicide as a solution to their problems. In addition, attitudes

toward suicide have shifted through the centuries as people gave names to

feelings like shame and guilt (Hooff, 2000). As such, suicide is now seen as an

act with complex motivation and many contributing factors especially when an

individual is feeling despair and thought that suicide is an escape from their

problems in life.

Methods on attempting suicide

The second theme that describes the thoughts of students on attempting

suicide is to identify what are the forms or ways they’ve used to attempt self-

murder. In our in-depth interview, we learned that the students used various

forms upon attempting suicide. Moreover, the availability and acceptability of

methods and attempters’ knowledge of the likely lethality of a given method. We

discovered that the students commonly used the form of taking drugs and

slashing wrists.

Taking Drugs. We take medicine to feel better when we are not feeling

well but on our study students take medicine to end their life as this method is

painless and accessible.

One of the examples on attempting suicide is to take an overdose

of medicine, for instance taking one bottle of the drug can be
categorized as attempting suicide. (So, isa pa sa mga example is
kana ganing muinom kag tambal which is kanang ma overdose na
34

gani kanang kontahay sa is kanang unsay tawag ana bottle kanang

Sometimes they will take sleeping pills, I've known someone who
does it. (Usahay mag sleeping pills nakoy nakuanan na tao. P4)
Other methods of attempting suicide are taking sleeping pills.
sleeping pills. P5)
You will think about taking medicine that will make you overdose
while pretending that you were just sleeping.

Slashing wrist. Hurting yourself will definitely end the problems that

causes you pain that is why students use the blade on slashing their own wrists,

this was proven on the participants answers about forms on attempting suicide.

You will use the blade to slash your own wrists, it may not seem so
serious but when you don’t notice to slash your wrist excessively,
there is a tendency that you’ll end up dead. (Yong blade
Example of methods on attempting suicide is slashing your own
wrist. (Example kanang kuan mag kanang maghikog ka or kanang
mag laslas ka. P2)
Slashing my own wrists maybe will make our relationship be mine
again, but I know it was wrong because it will just make the
situation more complicated. (Maglaslas nalang kay basin kay
pagbuhaton nako na butang which is balikan ko niya pero mali ko
kay kuan pagbuhaton kuna akoy nagdungag dungag a ra nako ang
sakit sa akong sarili. P4)
Yes, just like slashing your own wrists because they thought that it
is the only way to forget their problems. (Yes, just like paglaslas kay
I slash my wrists because of my life before. (Nag laslas ko tungod
kay sa tungod sakong kinabuhi sa una. P6)
35

Students attempt suicide because of their problems in life, different

students had difference and similarities on the method they’ve used to attempt

suicide. Many studies find little relationship between intent and medical severity

or between intent and choice of methods (Townsend, 2001, Hamdi, 1991 and

Harriss 2005). Thirty patients who attempted suicide were interviewed. Their

reasons given for choosing the method included availability, painless and lethality

(Skopek, 1998). It shows that the participants choose the aforementioned

methods as it is available and painless. Furthermore, the suicide attempt is a

deliberate act of self-harm with at least some intent to die but does not result in

death. A suicidal person will have plans that are severely form of suicidal ideation

that includes identifying a method or scenario, thus the results showed that

slashing wrists and taking drugs is the main method on attempting suicide.

Causes to attempt suicide

This theme describes the causes of attempting suicide. During the

interview, we discover various reasons from our participants on why they attempt

suicide. Typically, they had different experiences which can be the cause of

suicidal behavior. On our interview, we learned that the causes of attempting

suicide for the students when they thought that attempting suicide is the solution

to their problem and when they receive violent words from other people.

Solution to the Problem. Problems are part of our daily lives, however, we

tend to find ways to solve it, yet sometimes finding a solution is an arduous one

and attempting suicide is the only way. On our interview, most of the participants

viewed suicide attempt as the solution to their problems.

Actually for me, there are other ways to solve my problem but it
comes to my mind that this is the best way to solve my problems.
way siguro nga para nga mas dali mawala to nga problem. P2)
In my own perception attempting suicide is the only way to forget all
of my problems.
I was young that time and there is no other solution except on
attempting suicide.

Receiving violent words. Hearing unnecessary words from someone is

indeed painful. We learned from our participants that receiving violent words can

also trigger someone to attempt suicide. We researchers have realized that we

38

should be careful about what we are saying towards other people, they may have

weak emotional quotient (EQ) that cannot handle painful words.

It was the time when I hang-out and when I got home I was scolded
by my mothers because of not doing the household chores, being
scolded made me cried and depressed. (So katung na sa situation
is katung time nga ninglaag ko ato and then pag uli nako ato sa
balay is grabing pangasaba sa ako.a ni mama kay lagi daw
himuonon gani sa balay so nganong wala lagi daw nako
gipangbuhat so mao to pagkasaba niya sa ako kay grabing hilak
nako nya pagkahuman nya na depressed. P2)
I can still recall the situation when my brother ordered me to cook
for our meal yet I disagreed, he got mad and we fought and he said
mean words to me.
gepangstorya. P6)

The results have shown that the participants thought that death is an

escape to the problems they are experiencing, as they thought that their current

feelings and situation will never change for the better. They are really desperate

to escape suffering that has become unbearable. The difficulty that suicidal

people have to imagine a solution to their suffering is due in part to the distorted

thinking caused by depression. Some people who end their lives or attempt

suicide might be trying to escape feelings of rejection, hurt, or loss. Others might

feel angry, ashamed, or guilty about something. Further, Moutier stated that the

actual functioning of our brain will definitely change and it does not let you think

of ways or ideas to solve a problem. These what happened to our participants as

they answered that there is no other way but kill themselves, it is because of the

cognitive constriction that was defined as the feeling of a tunnel vision. People in

this situation can't see the fact that their struggles will come to an end,
39

Aside from it now we know that receiving painful words will also lead to a

suicide attempt. Now we know, how much weight some words and phrases carry.

These things shouldn’t be thrown carelessly; the only place they should is out of

our vocabulary completely. Change your words and tell others too- because

chances are someone is being hurt by their words and may just be in too much

pain to others (The Mighty, 2016). Individuals who received painful words may

get stuck on that phrase, their minds are definitely wandering about it and may

drown to emotional pain and the desire to die served as their only hope. As

stated by Dr. Stacey Freedenthal, she describes attempting suicide as a mental

toothache, because as we have a toothache, all we think about is the pain we

feel on our tooth. It can be related to the result when a certain person receives

painful words, all he thinks about is the pain caused by those words and their

minds become narrower about the possible ways to conquering it.

Realizations after Attempting Suicide

This theme is about the realization of the students after attempting suicide

as well as their coping mechanism. We researchers realize that some people

attempt suicide means to die but have failed because of being hit by realizations.

Sadly, many people who really didn’t mean to kill themselves end up dead or

critically ill.

Regret. During the interview, participants tell us what they went through

their minds in what they expected to be their final moments and what it's like to

return to a life they tried to end. After attempting suicide the participants are

regretful after doing the act. We researchers learned that the

I have realized that what I did was wrong because there are lots of
people who love and supported me always. ( kuan naka hunahuna
I regretted it so much, and now I won't let my problems defeat me
as there plenty of ways to conquer my own problems. ( Nagsisi ako
ng subra. Kasi problema lang yun. Bat ako magpapatalo. Ganun.
Yes, I regretted it on attempting suicide because I know it’s a sin.
(Oh, nag sisi jud.
kaayog sala. P2)
Yes, I do have regrets. (Oo nag mahay ko. P4)
42

Every person deserves a second chance, just like that person who

attempted suicide. They had given a chance to live and make things right.

However, it's a misconception that all suicidal person really want to die because

some were just carried away by their emotions and attempt suicide. This clearly

shows that the students have regrets and have realized that it's the solution to

their problems. Besides, Kevin Hines (2016) who survived after he leaps at the

Golden Gate Bridge, has said that by the time after he jumped, he regretted it.

After all, people attempt suicide not minding what will happen next, especially to

the persons who cared for them. As stated in Quora by an anonymous person

(2013). He regretted that he attempts suicide not for himself but because of the

pain he causes to the people he loves and loved him through. People who were

involved may feel sorry about their selves, but life goes on they should not leave

and stuck their selves on that situation. Instead, used the experience as a lesson

to, even more, the gift of life that was once bestowed by our dearest God.
43

44
45

Therefore, we were able to look into the reasons and realizations of the

students towards attempting suicide. Their realization is having regrets.

When suicide was known some students deal with it without knowing what is its

impact on their lives. They are doing an act without even knowing that it's risky

for them. Hence, after doing the act they had realized that attempting suicide is

not the solution to their problems.

Moreover, this study revealed that the students attempt suicide because of

problems and a wish to kill one’s own life. Lastly, students realize that attempting

suicide is a big sin to our dear God.

Implications

Attempting suicide is a way for students to solve their problems. Serious

suicide attempts are a valid proxy for completed suicides, and therefore, the

reasons for the students on why they attempt suicide should be the forefront of

our research study. Further, attempting suicide for the participants is the solution

to their problems, we can say that the participants are hopeless and are feeling

despair. As supported by our theory hopelessness plays a key role in Beck's

model, along with the negative triad of negative thoughts about oneself, others,

and the future (Beck, 2006).

It is important to note that attempting suicide has an impact on the person

involved. People will need to resolve their feelings that trigger them to attempt

suicide in their own way or with the help of others. Adolescents as a

46

developmental stage in growth bring with it many complex changes, therefore

they are the ones who are mostly involved.

Future Directions

Attempting suicide serve as the solution to the problems of the students,

but it is not the right thing to do.

Based on our interview students should share their problems with their family or

relatives, for them to avoid suicidal behavior. In such a manner, students saved

their life by avoiding such act. Since they are the ones who attempt suicide, they

should know first what the effects are and they should have discernment that

their life would be at risk if they attempt suicide.

Since there are only a few researchers who study this topic, we expect

that there are more researchers to study this kind of problem in the future. If

there are more researcher who would study this topic, students will be aware of

this phenomena and for them to realize that it is not the right thing to do to solve

their problems.

Furthermore, future studies need to consider the importance of strict and

consistent definition criteria for a serious suicide attempt to improve research

strategies, assessment, and preventive efforts. Regardless, of the limited scope

of research and the availability of data, it is important that health care

professionals are consulted upon conducting this kind of study.

Ah

next ( laugh)

Translation:

Suicide is when you feel like you don’t understand your life anymore and

there are lots of challenges that will make you confuse what know what to do

first. However the people that should be the one who will comfort you are the
57

ones who shows you that they are interested to help ang by that, you are really

tired and that is why you thought ending your life will make you free from all off

your problems. But sometimes you will think about the persons that will e left if

ever you end your life, it does not mean thy love all they care about are the

expenses you causes if ever it happens.)

Probing Question:

1. Oo gaya na lang nung ano yung. Halimbawa yung ikaw lang mag-isa

sa bahay niyo. So do though gusto mong magpakamaty pero

parang ganun ba ganun. (loud)

Translation:

Yes, just like when you are alone in your house and even though you

want to kill yourself yet cowardness swallows you, then you will think of

a way that will not make you feel pain, so you tried to take medicines

for you to overdose or else you will use knife to kill yourself. Dont show

them that you are doing it, just like that.

58

2. Yun yung di kumain charot (laugh) oo yung ganun tapos. Lagyan mo

ng (loud) oo ason yung mismong pagkain mo kunware. Wala lang

Ganun tapos.

May

Translation:

Just like you will not eat, yes just like that. You will put poison on

your food and slash your own wrist by using blade and when youll

mamatay sila kay di naman nila kaya

Translation:

Yes just like, example of that is like the situation that you are so

depressed in your life and you can’t handle it all. They will going to

iyang kinabuhi.

Translation:

Attempting suicide for me is like the situation that I’ve encountered or

experienced and it is the attempt to kill ones own life.

Probing Question

1. Yes, just like paglaslas kay ang pag laslas sa is aka tao kay kini

naisip man niya kay kana lang ang way para makalimtan lang niya

iyang mga problema

Translation:

Yes, just like slashing yourself. If that person slash their self they

thought that it is the only way to forget their problems.

house, doing different things to make me happy then I don’t want

myself to do anything in the house and I’m just making different kinds

of arts just like that. Because, that thing would gave me happiness

that’s it if they will give me same as that I will forget and I will not do it

again.

depressed in the school just because of many projects and then I felt that

I’m not doing a right thing for her. That time I tried to attempt suicide, when

my mother and my brother got sleep I went to the kitchen and I pick up the

blade and then I tried but I’m just thinking that it was not a right thing.

nga mas dali mawala to nga problem..tanan man ta nay problema sa

kinabuhi so maong ganin gitagaan gani ta ni God ug problema dili kay

walay walay sousyon nga mahimo ta gitagaan ta ni God enable to us

enable to us to be strong dili kay magpakamatay ta.

Translation:

For me there is another way to solve my problem but it comes into my

mind that it was the best way to solve my problem. All of us have a

paraan nga balikan ko niya mao to naglaslas pero sad gihapun akong

life.

Translation:
71

There is, but sometimes because of too much emotion you will be

mental block just because of the pain and anger in your heart that’s

why you will do such thing because for you it is the only way for him to

love you back, that’s why I slashed my own wrist but still I’m sad.

P5

because it was a start why I’m slashing my own wrist just because of my

mistakes to him.
72

mag hikog ang us aka tao (loud)

Translation:

For me there’s no another solution because suicide just like slashing

wrist was the easiest way for them to think and to do it.

P6

Translation:

what he said and he got mad at me, that time I’m too young then we

started fighting after that I went to the comfort room and I pick up a blade.

Wala walang sabit ba yun tipong. Kapag

gusto mong gumala walang mag. Walag magrereklamo kasi. Matanda kana nasa

tamang edad kana tas sarili mong pera yung winawaldas mo. Tas ganun parang

then someone borrow it without asking permission I will got mad and my money

would be useless just to buy it. Not only that, of course I don’t want to leave my

parents and also to those people who gave me a painful words atleast I know

that I have something to proud of. I want to hang out that no one can stop me

because I’m in the right age then I you have your own money to spend. Then I

ganun.

Yung

sinsiridad na. alagaan sila is. Gusto kong iparamdam sa kanila yun.

Translation:

I could emphasize my family, especially my father and my siblings who

are still small and also my mother, as well as my only sibling to her.

Then I have thought what if they will get older, who will take care of us.

I once told them that if youll get lost I want to get lost will them because

it is indeed hardtop accept that they will not stay much longer, the

person who gives me strength, the person who understands me, and

the one who are always my partner on everything. I have thought of

not leaving them even if sometimes I could say im tired of taking care

of them but the love and sensirity while taking care of them is what I

want them feel.

2. Yeah, subra.

ibang tao dyan. Ganun so. Nagsisi ako ng subra. Kasi problema lang

yun. Bat ako magpapatalo. Ganun. Eh marami namang bagay diyan

76

na kaya ko namang gawin. Para lang. hindi ko ma. Isip yung ganun

bagay para lang mawala yung problema ko. Yun lang.

Translation:

Maybe taking the person seriously, and then you have thought that

there are many person why do I have to be carried by this emotion. I

regretted it very much. Because it was only a problem, why do let ot to

defeat me, as there were lots of things that will solve your problems.

3. Natawa ako. Natawa ako na . nainis na nagalit. Na masakit. Ganun.

Ko. Ano no. kung itutuloy ko man ito hindi tigok na ako noh. Eh pano

yung hirap nila.

gusto mong magpakamatay ganyan ganyan.

Puro nalang, puno nalang saya yung

dadanasin ko yun.

Translation:

I laughed, pissed, angry and it was painful and if ever I continued it I

will surely be dead. What will just happen to my parents especially to

their efforts sor me to live yet I just gonna wasted it. When I laughed it

was when I realized that I was being so immature, the thought is when

I goot old it is also the time my mind seems so childish with a small

thing youll kill yourself. For my future it was easy for me to surrender it,

cant I just wait for the time where I can be happy. Maybe, for me I

already experienced all the pain and in the future all I would gonna

experience is happiness.
