Guidance in the Philippine School System
Introduction
As we move forward under the Chapter 8 “Guidance in the Classroom” we are going to describe
the importance of guidance in the classroom setting, guidance in the modern education,
qualification of the teacher, the qualities of a good teacher, the teachers duty and guidance in the
Philippine public schools. The ultimate goal of discussing this is to help them understand the
profession of teaching and give them an information about the existing guidance.
Modern education is for a modern society, and a school without guidance services is not
accepting the realities of the day. It simply means that guidance is one of a mark of modernization,
if we don’t have one nothing will change and many other school as well as the students and
teachers will left behind.
1. Devotion to an absorbing task which gives unity and test to life. Teachers who lack a
sense of the importance of their work often become worn, flurried and cynical. Those
who have a conviction of the usefulness and significance of their work are likely to
maintain good mental health.
2. Power to focus attention on the present situation; the ability to mobilize one’s whole
personality for the task at hand.
3. Ability to inspire confidence. It is important that students have confidence in their
teacher and feel that he is there not to ensure but to understand.
4. Emotional maturity. The teacher who lacks normal emotional outlets may keep
students dependent upon him, instead of helping them to develop independence and
capacity to make their own.adjustments to life
5. The habit of facing reality objectively,
6. Orderly association of ideas
7. Wide and varied interests that contribute to emotional balance.
Pupils are entitled to the benefit of the best efforts of the teacher in his work not only of promoting
pupils growth and development and managing the school, but also in establishing friendly
relations with pupils and parents, in making the school itself a center of wholesome influences.
The Bureau of Public Schools recognizes the importance of intelligent guidance of pupils by
teachers and supervisory officials. The following are the aspect of guidance.
a. Health Guidance -This aims to help pupils in maintaining physical, mental, and emotional
health that includes discovering of symptoms of abnormalities and referring of cases to
the patients and/or proper health officers.
b. Personal Guidance -This refer to guidance and problems which are of a personal and
private nature but affect the child’s school work.
c. Social Guidance - This aims to help students adjusting himself to his school environment
and finding a place in the social groups in school.
d. Educational Guidance- This aims to help the pupils employ proper methods of study, meet
problems and difficulties related to his academic subject and make correct choices of subjects
or courses where such courses are required.
e. Vocational Guidance
This type of guidance is more important in the secondary than in elementary school. Its
principal function is to assist the pupil in exploring and discovering his interests and aptitudes,
in making a wise choice of the occupation or profession he should pursue, in pursuing
effectively the kind of training or preparation needed for the occupation or profession he has
so chosen and in locating an appropriate job or school of higher learning , as the case may
be, after the period of his training or preparation.
Implication as a Person
The implication of it for me is the role of guidance not only in schools but in the society was very
important. As we consider the modernization happening in the world lot of changes happened
and we need those people who has the ability to guide us in the right path. No man is an island,
we need someone to help and understand whatever life gives to us so cherish those person that
serves as your guide and be thankful that you have them.
Implication as a Teacher
As a teacher, I realized that it wasn’t only the major you’ve taken or the academic subject that
you’re going to teach but most importantly the lesson that you can integrate in that every subject
that they will apply in the real life scenario. We’re not teachers were the second parent of the
students, we are the role model and the school is their second home so it is our job to filter the
learnings that they’re going to acquire. Influences that must be good for them, that should or must
be also seen to us, teachers. Teachers, teaching is beyond teaching, its life, love and family and
we should envision it like that.
