A Lesson Plan in Dactyloscopy

May 04, 2018

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Recognize the different kinds of fingerprints through pictures.

b. Relate the uniqueness of fingerprint to their everyday through recitation.

c. Sketch the different kinds of fingerprint.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Types of Fingerprint

Student Level: 2nd Year College Students

Reference: Dr. Vicente, Jezreel; “Dactyloscpoy: A textbook on Personal Identification”,

pg. 17 extracted on April 19, 2018.

Materials: Laptop, LCD Projector, Stamp Pad, Coupon Bonds

III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. PRELIMINARIES

1. Checking of attendance.

2. Review:

a. What did you learn from our a. We learned about fingerprint

discussion last meeting? tracing?

b. How many rules do we have b. We have seven rules.

in ridge tracing?

c. We have 3 types of whorl tracing.

c. How about the whorl

tracing? d. They are Inner Whorl, Outer Whorl

d. What are they? and Meeting Whorl.

MOTIVATION:
a. (Students raise their hands)
(Questions before the motivation activity)

a. How many of you locks their

phone?
Fingerprint
b. What kinds of lock do you use?

c. Fingerprint

c. Which do you prefer?

d. It is unique and cannot be used by

d. Why do you prefer it? other people.

Motivation/Activity

 Using a stamp pad, the students

will ink any of their fingers and

transfer their fingerprints on a ¼

sheet of bond paper. After the

lesson discussion, students will

determine what their fingerprint

type is.

B. PRESENTATION

 Topic is introduced briefly which is

the different types of fingerprints.

C. LESSON PROPER

Questions before/during/after

lecture-discussion:
a. Can you see your fingerprints a. Yes.

clearly on the paper?

b. Do you have any idea what the b. Yes/No

major types of fingerprints are?

c. If yes, what are they? c. Arch, Loop, Whorl

d. What are the two types of Arches? d. The two types are Plain Arch and

Tented Arch.

e. What is the difference between e. The plain arch is the simplest

these two? pattern that just flow from one side

to the other while a tented arch

has a ridge that tented at the

center.

f. What are the types of Loop f. We have the radial loop and ulnar

Patterns? loop.

g. What is a radial loop? g. A radial loop is slanting towards

the thumb whether it is the right

hand or left hand.

h. What is an ulnar loop? h. An ulnar loop is slanting towards

the pinky either right or left hand.

i. What are the kinds of whorl? i. We have the Plain Whorl, Central

Pocket loop Whorl, Double Loop

Whorl and Accidental Whorl.

j. What is a Plain Whorl?

j. One ridge makes a complete

circuit and have two deltas.

k. What is a Central Pocket Loop k. It has two patterns in one like a

Whorl? whorl inside a loop that makes a

circuit which maybe an oval, spiral

or circle

l. What is a Double Loop Whorl?

l. It consists of two separate and

distinct loop formations with two

sets of shoulders and deltas inside

a whorl.

m. How will you determine an m. It has a combination of two

Accidental Whorl? different patterns like a loop and

any whorl except arch and any

pattern.

n. Can anyone draw on the board

n. (A student goes in front and draw

like?

o. How does a radial and ulnar loop o. (A student goes in front and draw

does looks like? the patterns.)

p. How about the four types of whorl? p. (A student goes in front and draw

the patterns.)

q. What is your fingerprint pattern? q. (Student says any type of pattern.)

r. (Student says a description of any

r. What is your basis?
of the patterns.)

s. Do you think that the fingerprints of s. No.

identical twins are similar?

t. How do you say so?

t. Fingerprints are unique and their

fingerprints may be the same but

not similar because of the

formations of the ridges.

u. What was the case that cemented u. The West Case.

the use of fingerprints in

identification?

v. What happened in the West Case? v. Both of them has similar traits and

a name of Will West. One was

wrongly accused because the

police used the anthropometry

method. They found out that there

were two West’s so they decided

to have their fingerprints be used

for comparison.

w. Do you think that fingerprints can w. Yes/No.

be obliterated?

x. Why Yes? x. We can have it be removed by

plastic surgery or some acids.

y. Why not?
y. Fingerprints will always grow back

once they heal.

D. GENERALIZATION/SUMMARY

 What are the 3 main types of  The three main types are the

fingerprints? whorl, loop and arch.

 What are the two kinds of Loop?  The two kinds of loop are the radial

and ulnar loop.

 What are two kinds of Arch?  We have the plain arch and tented

arch.

 What are the four kinds of Whorl?  We have the Plain whorl, central

pocket loop whorl, double loop

whorl and the accidental whorl.

E. APPLICATION

 Determine your fingerprint pattern

and write it in the ¼ sheet of bond

paper.

IV. EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT

The students will draw their fingerprint patterns in a bond paper and label

what kind of fingerprint types they are.

V. AGREEMENT

The students will bring their laboratory gowns on the next meeting and will

have a practicum at the crime laboratory.
