Unit Title: Color Study with Geometry Name: Son Le

Content Area: Visual Art, Painting Grade Level: Seventh Grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

1.0 ARTISTIC PERCEPTION

• 1.4 Analyze and describe how the elements of art and the principles of design contribute to the expressive qualities of their own
works of art.

2.0 CREATIVE EXPRESSION

• 2.2 Use different forms of perspective to show the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface.

• 2.4 Develop skill in mixing paints and showing color relationships.

4.0 AESTHETIC VALUING

• 4.4 Develop and apply specific and appropriate criteria individually or in groups to assess and critique works of art.
• 4.5 Identify what was done when a personal work of art was reworked and explain how those changes improved the work.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Visual Thinking: colors appear in everyday live. Recognizing their existence and comprehending their principles will enhance students’
visual thinking. They become more sensitive with colors in different values.
Logical Thinking: Geometric shapes are a basic element in math. Understanding how to construct geometric shapes such as hexagon or
equilateral triangle with only compass, linear and triangle rulers can direct students to new perspective of geometry. Their logical thinking
will improve as they realize how geometric shapes can be utilized.
Confidence: criticizing and being criticized are tasks which most people must do in their work place, especially artists. Having students to
appropriately participate in critiques and welcome feedbacks from their peers will help them become more confident in socializing within
groups.
Self-esteem: Students will build up self-esteem after being aware of the diversity of palettes in vary cultures including their cultures. They
will recognize that art is about a variation of colors, and how it is organized reflects the personality of the artist.

Unit Goals and Objectives:

 Each student will:

 Demonstrate an understanding of geometric shapes by constructing some for color studies.
 Illustrate relationships of colors by painting color gradients in geometric templates.
 Improve a sense of color variations in different values.
 Collaborate with group members on a study to analyze different palettes from paintings during Synchromism period.
 Create a palette and apply uniquely on a mandala.

Unit Summary:

What is color and how it functions in nature?

This unit will conduct color studies, so students can understand the relationship of colors; how they correlate to each other and how to
manipulate them to make a work of art. They will engage with geometry to construct blank templates with geometric shapes by common
tools: compass, linear and triangle rulers. Students will expose to art vocabulary to be able to participate in group as well as one-on-one
critiques. Research about favorite works of art will be assigned so students can analyze how color principles contribute in the artwork.
