What is Civil Engineering?

According to Royal Charter received by the Institution of Civil Engineering in 1828,

Civil Engineering is defined as the "application of physical and scientific principles, and its
history is intricately linked to advances in the understanding of physics and mathematics
throughout history".

The Difference between Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering

Some may think that Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering were the
same but actually, they are different. They have basic similarities yet they have some overlapping
differences. Let's first define Environmental Science, it is the study that provides an integrated,
quantitative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental systems. While
Environmental Engineering is a field of study that utilizes existing principles of engineering to
develop and implement solutions to environmental issues, often as a result of a recommendation
provided by an environmental scientist. Now that we know its definition, let's tackle their
similarities. They are both concerned with the natural environment and its relationship with the
human world. Both environmental scientists and engineers focus on data gathered from the
natural environment, particularly data on the past and future effects of human activity and its
impact, in order to devise and implement solutions to a variety of issues.

Environmental Science helps an individual to adopt a role as a scientist, one who specifically
researches a given topic, analyzes data, and uses this information to help others enact significant
change. An environmental scientist may assist in developing new recycling systems, may analyze
human influence on the environment, or may work to enact legislative change through
presentations. Ultimately, environmental scientists play an integral role in preserving the quality
of the natural surroundings that we share. While Environmental Engineers, in general, take the
information presented by scientists and develop and implement solutions to any issues presented.
An environmental engineer may assist in the creation of a new waste disposal project or may
help craft a new system to monitor air pollution. Overall, these engineers are responsible for
taking action to help protect the integrity of our natural environment.

What is Environmental Science?

A branch of Biology concerned with connectivity among organisms and their

environment, as well as the study of how our roles as humans affect our natural surroundings. It
assesses the impact of human activity on the global environment and develops scientific, risk-
based solutions to help secure a sustainable future. This major encompasses both the biological
and the earth sciences.

Water Pollution

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—

contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality
and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.

The process of contamination of water due to the following:

 The first cause is people who are dumping trash in rivers. This contamination can also
lead to a stinky smell that can also affect the health of the people who can inhale it.

 The second one is the factories. The unneeded chemicals are dumped in rivers that results
in illness and killings to fishes.

 Third, are the squatter. The solid and liquid wastes and also the household ways of the
humans/residence are going to the water in rivers.

 The last cause is the boats which leave oils on the top of the water that causes for the
oxygen to not enter in the water. And if the oxygen can't enter the water, the fishes will
get less oxygen.

Air Pollution

This is where the poisonous gas and other fumes mixed with the clean air which is inhaled by
humans and other living organisms.

 factories

 car

 cigarettes

These things emit chemical that mixed with clean air that can affect the health of the people who
are exposed to it.

Land Pollution

Land pollution, in other words, means degradation or destruction of earth’s surface and soil,
directly or indirectly as a result of human activities. Anthropogenic activities are conducted
citing development, and the same affects the land drastically, we witness land pollution; by
drastic we are referring to any activity that lessens the quality and/or productivity of the land as
an ideal place for agriculture, forestation, construction etc. The degradation of land that could be
used constructively in other words is land pollution.

 Mining are one of these causes of land pollution. During extraction and mining activities,
several land spaces are created beneath the surface. We constant hear about land caving
in; this is nothing but nature’s way of filling the spaces left out after mining or extraction
activity.

 Second, are the agricultural project. The fertilizer used by farmers mixed in the soil that
may cause cancer, skin illness/allergy, etc.

 The last one is the contamination of poisonous waste and chemicals.

Relationship of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science

The civil engineer construct and make the building while the environmental scientist makes sure
that the building that the civil engineer make is harm free from the environment.

Why do we need to study Civil Engineering and Environmental Science?

1. Civil engineers make modern life possible. They work on the planning, design, construction
and maintenance of projects such as skyscrapers, motorways, bridges, tunnels and dams. You
will learn how to use math and science to design major construction projects, design and build
the infrastructure for modern cities, calculate the maximum load a bridge can withstand, solve
transportation problems, and understand the environmental issues to be aware of when
undertaking construction.

Expanding populations and growing economies fuel the demand for major construction and
design projects; these represent opportunities for civil engineers. Graduates can also use their
engineering qualification and background as a stepping-stone into other careers. Many work in
the top echelons of business internationally.
Environmental protection is an important issue for society today as scientific research provides
evidence of increasing global warming, ozone depletion and higher levels of pollution. You will
learn how to design, develop and evaluate structures, equipment and systems to provide practical
solutions to problems caused by increasing consumption and waste, and the potential threats to
biodiversity. Projects include learning how to clean up toxic material that has seeped into the
ground and designing an effective wastewater treatment plant. Tougher environmental
regulations and efforts to prevent problems before they occur are just two examples of the
increasing challenges environmental engineers are exposed to.

2. Environmental sciences are very interesting field. Environmental sciences are study of
interaction of environment with living thing and non-living thing. We study environmental
science for aware our environment, pollutant and activities destroy our environment that emitted
by the industries and effects of pollution on our environment and also on how we protect our
environment. Environmentalist makes laws for protect our environment.

3. Environmental science today covers, how living and nonliving things interact. It involves a lot
of discipline and fields of study such as physics, biology, chemistry, geography, oceanography,
etc. Thus, environmental science is very important because it study the connection and
implication of seemingly disconnected phenomena, enlightening to the consequence of our
action such the effect of technology on the destruction of the natural resources and the
ecosystem, and what we can do to reverse some of these destructive forces and heal the
environment, saving ourselves in the process.
There are more calamities experienced such as flashfloods, hurricanes and draughts and climate
change. If we do not study the environment, then there is a great danger that everything that we
know as home with all that surround us, will lead to extinction, yes including the extinction of
our species.

4. Environmental science is the study of the interactions between the physical, chemical, and
biological components of the natural world, including their effects on all types of organisms and
how humans impact their surroundings. Environment is everything that affects an organism
during its lifetime. In turn, all organisms, including people, affect many components in their
environment. From a human point of view, environmental issues involve concerns about science,
nature, health, employment, profits, law, politics, ethics, fine arts, and economies. Therefore,
environmental science is by its nature a multidisciplinary field. The word environmental is
usually understood to mean the surrounding conditions that affect people and other organisms.

5. Environmental science is interdisplanery subject means all sciences are included in it whether
it is geological science or life science.
It should be understood that construction of any kind, has an impact on the environment. In
today's world, when we have so much emphasis on environmental conservation, inclusion of
study related to management of environmental resources becomes a topic of significance.

Example:

Construction of buildings is not only restricted only to the structural design. The construction
should be such that the project has minimum impact on the environment. Many countries have
started Green Buildings Certification to promote activities which are eco-friendly.

While planning and construction of water pipelines should be looked from structural point of
view, it is important to know how the facilities could be used to transport water which is clean.
