General
The oil for the gearbox is cooled by engine
coolant.
The oil cooler is located in the engine block.

Renewal of gearbox oil cooler

General
The work description applies to 11, 12, 14 and
16 litre engines.
Preparatory work and subsequent work apply to
all engines.

Preparatory work
1 Drain the coolant. See group 02, Cooling
system.
2 Raise and support the vehicle. See group 00.
3 Tilt the cab. See group 18, Cab tilt system.
4 Drain the oil from the gearbox. See
group 00, Maintenance instructions part 1,
group 5.

1 The compressor must be removed from
engines with injection pump. See Main
group 10.
On engines with turbo compound, this unit
must be removed as described in the
instructions. See booklet 01:03-04.

2 Remove the oil pipes.

3 Remove the side cover from the engine


block and remove any remains of the gasket.

4 Renew the oil cooler insert and fit new


O-rings to the new side cover.

Tightening torque 26 Nm

5 Fit the side cover with a new gasket to the


engine block.

6 Fit the oil pipes with new O-rings. Coat the


O-rings with assembly compound.
7 Fit the bolt without tightening it.

8 Tighten the nuts by hand. Tighten nuts 3 and


4 in numerical order to 60 Nm, using stop
nut 5 as a counter hold.

Renewal
1 Remove the oil pipes.

2 Remove the coolant pipes from the oil


cooler.
3 Release the strap securing the oil cooler.
Remove the oil cooler and fit a new one.
Make sure the guide pin is located in its
hole and fit the strap again. 1 Coolant pipe

4 Check that coolant pipes and clamps are in
good condition. Renew them if necessary. 3 Oil pipe

5 Fit the coolant pipes to the oil cooler.


6 Fit the oil pipes with two O-rings on each
pipe and new copper gaskets. Coat the
O-rings with assembly compound. Tighten
the banjo screws to 20 Nm.

Work method for 16 litre engines

Renewal
1 Remove the exhaust manifold on the engine
left side.

2 Loosen the oil pipe banjo screws on the oil
filter holder a half turn so that the pipes can
be turned.
3 Remove the latch lugs which lock the oil
pipes in the bracket on the clutch housing
upper left side.
4 Remove the screw which holds the bracket
in place and push the bracket backwards
over the oil pipes.
5 Remove the bolts which hold the oil pipes
on the side casing.
6 Open the coolant drain tap which is located
inside the oil cooler rear edge.
7 Separate the oil pipes at the joint and
withdraw the oil pipes from the oil cooler.
8 Remove the side cover and oil cooler from
the engine block.
9 Close the coolant drain tap.
10 Remove the bolts holding the oil cooler to
the side cover and remove the oil cooler.

11 Clean gasket remnants from the engine


block and the side cover.
12 Fit a new oil cooler insert with new O-rings
to the side cover.
13 Fit the side cover with a new gasket to the
engine block.
14 Fit the oil pipes with new O-rings. Coat the
O-rings with assembly compound 815 368.
15 Fit the latch lugs.
16 Fit the bolt which holds the bracket on the
clutch housing.
17 Tighten the banjo screws on the oil filter
holder to 20 Nm.
18 Fit the bolt which holds the oil pipe on the
side casing.
19 Fit the exhaust manifold. Lubricate the
joints with lubricant 561 205.

Dismantling
1 Remove the oil cooler complete with cover
from the engine. See the booklet Work
description 05:00-05.
2 Clean the oil cooler and the cover.
3 Fit special tool 99 505 with an O-ring.

4 Connect tool 99 405. Check that the cooler
reduction is closed and that the pressure
gauge does not show any pressure.
5 Lower the complete oil cooler with housing
into a water bath. Raise the pressure to 0

minute.
6 If there is leakage, renew any leaking parts
and carry out the leak test again.

Checking tightness

Assembly
1 Refit the oil cooler. See booklet Work
description 05:00-05.

Subsequent work
1 Top up the gearbox with oil. See Main
group 00, Maintenance instructions part 1,
group 5 .

Note: Only applicable when renewing: If oil has


penetrated into the engine cooling system, it
must be cleaned as described in the instructions.
See Main group 02, Cooling system.

2 Fill with coolant. See Main group 02,


Cooling system.
3 Check gearbox oil level, top up if necessary.
4 Check for any water or oil leakage.
