Function Description
General
The oil for the gearbox is cooled by engine
coolant.
The oil cooler is located in the engine block.
Work Description
General
The work description applies to 11, 12, 14 and
16 litre engines.
Preparatory work and subsequent work apply to
all engines.
Preparatory work
1 Drain the coolant. See group 02, Cooling
system.
2 Raise and support the vehicle. See group 00.
3 Tilt the cab. See group 18, Cab tilt system.
4 Drain the oil from the gearbox. See
group 00, Maintenance instructions part 1,
group 5.

Renewal
1 The compressor must be removed from
engines with injection pump. See Main
group 10.
On engines with turbo compound, this unit
must be removed as described in the
instructions. See booklet 01:03-04.

1 Remove the oil pipes.

Renewal
1 Remove the exhaust manifold on the engine
left side.

2 Loosen the oil pipe banjo screws on the oil
filter holder a half turn so that the pipes can
be turned.
3 Remove the latch lugs which lock the oil
pipes in the bracket on the clutch housing
upper left side.
4 Remove the screw which holds the bracket
in place and push the bracket backwards
over the oil pipes.
5 Remove the bolts which hold the oil pipes
on the side casing.
6 Open the coolant drain tap which is located
inside the oil cooler rear edge.
7 Separate the oil pipes at the joint and
withdraw the oil pipes from the oil cooler.
8 Remove the side cover and oil cooler from
the engine block.
9 Close the coolant drain tap.
10 Remove the bolts holding the oil cooler to
the side cover and remove the oil cooler.

Checking tightness
Tools
For checking gearbox oil cooler tightness, the
following tools are required:

Dismantling
1 Remove the oil cooler complete with cover
from the engine. See the booklet Work
description 05:00-05.
2 Clean the oil cooler and the cover.
3 Fit special tool 99 505 with an O-ring.

4 Connect tool 99 405. Check that the cooler
reduction is closed and that the pressure
gauge does not show any pressure.
5 Lower the complete oil cooler with housing
into a water bath. Raise the pressure to 0

minute.
6 If there is leakage, renew any leaking parts
and carry out the leak test again.

1 Refit the oil cooler. See booklet Work

Subsequent work
1 Top up the gearbox with oil. See Main
group 00, Maintenance instructions part 1,
group 5 .
