READING COMPREHENSION
Carbon tetrachloride is a colorless and inflammable liquid that can be produced by combining
carbon disulfide and clorine. This compound is widely used in industry because of its
effectiveness as a solvent as well as its use in the reproduction of propellants.
Despite its widespread use in industry, carbon tetrachloride has been banned for home use. In the
past, carbon tetrachloride was a common ingridients in cleaning compounds that were used
throughout the home, but it was found to be dangerous; when heated it changes to a poisonous
gas that can cause severe illness and even death if its inhaled. Because of this dangerous
characteristic, the USA revoked a permission for the home use of carbon tetrachloride in 1970.
The United States has taken similar action with various other chemical compounds.

We live on earth. Earth is the only planet in the solar system, with living things on it. Mercury is
the nearest planet to the sun. It is much smaller than our earth. We call it the morning star. The
next planet is venus. It is the same size as earth but there are no living things there. Earth is
between Venus and Mars. Marsis the nearest planet to earth and has two moons. Jupiter is the
biggest planet in our solar system, but it isn’t really a planet – it is just a big ocean and it has 63
moons! Saturn is bigger than earth and has beautiful rings. Uranus is very rocky and maybe the
rocks are full of millions of diamonds. We don’t know much about Neptune because it is very
far.
