Abstract

An Assistant Editor is responsible for supporting the editor-in-chief or other experienced

editors. Cram Crew is an academic tutoring firm to help student in a variety of subjects. The

main job of an Assistant Editor is to help clients go through the college application process. This

ad is very detailed and does well in explaining the roles and responsibilities. But it does not

provide any form of contact information for the applicant to use to ask questions which gets the

effect of more people looking on their website and seeing what they are all about. The beginning,

while very informative, is also quite wordy which caused me to skim over it. Towards the end of

the ad, I got the sense that its target audience could be an experienced editor or possible a person

who has just graduated looking for a job to further themselves in their field. Cram crew expects

one thing only: results.

Assistant Editor

After I leave Texas A&M University, my goal is to get a job as an editor. After looking

around I found a company on Indeed.com that is looking to hire an Assistant Editor with Cram

Crew, Inc. An Assistant Editor is responsible for supporting the editor-in-chief or other well-

established editors. For this company, the Assistant Editor will be required to assist the clients

through the college application process by reviewing entrance resumes and essays. Help in

subjects such as math, science, history, English, Spanish, and the PSAT exam is available for

students who need them. The Cram Crew, Inc is an academic tutoring firm filled with people

who only expect one thing: results. I chose this job because it is something students who have

just graduated can get into in order to gain more experience in a field such as editing or teaching.

I intend to talk about how the ad targets specific audiences, what this company is about, and

some things this ad can incorporate to make it better.

The target audience for this ad are people who have graduated from a university.

Specifically, with a degree in English, Communications, or in related field. This company wants

people who are detailed oriented, can prioritize, and work as a team. Additionally, Cram Crew

want people who are proficient in Adobe InDesign; which is a software that can be used to create

posters, flyers, brochures, newspapers, presentations, etc. I feel this ad targets new graduates

instead of someone more experienced because it lists its qualifications and experience a person

should have such as an understanding of writing mechanics and structure, grammatical,

proofreading, communication, and editing skills that can be learned in a classroom environment.

This job appeals to someone like me who has never held a job because it’s an opportunity to gain

experience in my field to move higher up the chain. It would not appeal to strongly to a person

who has many experiences and years under their belt because they would be skilled enough to be

a leader and work independently.

The first thing that catches my attention is salary per hour. It’s the first thing on the page

and its very green so it automatically draws me to the numbers. If it’s a low salary, then it’s not a

job ad that I would be interested in looking at because bills need to get paid. Luckily, the salary

is above minimum wage and the description looks good, $12-14 an hour, so I gave it a shot.

Following the salary per hour, the company provides a description of what things they do there.

Cram Crew is an academic tutoring firm filled with multi-talented, life long learners who expect

results. If I were to apply and get the job, they will provide me with comprehensive training, a

collaborative environment, and professional developmental programs. On the right side of the ad,

there is a spot where people can review this company. On that page, there is a tab called “Why

Join Us” that includes a more in-depth description of their company. I thought this was very

considerate of them because many other job ads I’ve looked at didn’t provide this. This shows

they are very serious about what they do and strive to only have dedicated people working with

them.

This ad is very well put together. It provides a lot more information than any other ones I

have seen which is very good. But I think it would have been nice if they included the benefits

that come with becoming apart of this company. Of course, if you look on their website you can

find the benefits, expected hours working a week which is 30+ per week that equals to an

average of 7 hours a day. But the benefits are contingent upon a person’s full-time status.

The Cram Crew ad is very wordy at the beginning. I had to reread it multiple times

because I kept skimming over it. The website is very organized though and very kid friendly,

with the words used and the colorful pages. I feel if they had used some of the words like in their

career introduction on the website, they would be more welcoming. Instead, comparing the two,

the job ad on indeed is blunter than the website, which is very bright and welcoming. Also, the

ad doesn’t provide any information on how to contact someone if needed. To me, this is a

strategy they use to get people to check out their website. Especially if the applicant has friends

with kids, they would tell their friends and family members about this organization. Thus, the

company gets more people to brag to others meaning this company will bring in more revenue

then it has already.

As stated above, this job ad for an Assistant Editor is very well put together. The

description of the company, the outline of qualifications, and the experience required were

clearly explained. And I have provided some things this ad could improve on such as more

details. This type of ad is something that many people with teaching, English, and

Communications degree would be attracted to be involved with.
