Re: Ensuring a fair trial to Mr. Assange

Dear Ms. May.

The under signatories believe that the right to asylum is a civilizing conquest in the international legal
framework. We, therefore, deplore the revocation of asylum status to Mr Julian Assange done by Ecuador,
which, in an act of political cowardice and submission to the political designs of Mr. Trump, the president of
Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, has implied the handed of Julian Assange to the British police authorities. We call
you now to make sure that Mr. Assange will have a fair trial and will not be extradited to the US.

Mr. Assange is a symbol of the struggle for international political transparency and against the spurious
political and economic powers. The independence of justice system is an essential element for rule of law
and democracy, twisting the law through a political-legal hunting by the US authorities and their
international allies creates a terrible precedent. It must be acknowledged that it was thanks to the leaks of
WikiLeaks that global citizenship has been able to know part of the worst dynamics of power and to learn to
defend themselves. According to the European Union´s Directive on whistleblowers, when a journalist or a
whistleblower uncovers state secrets that are in the public interest, they should not be prosecuted for their
act of public service. The true must always to be reveal and those whistleblowers who reveal it must be
protected.

We condemn the circumstances in which Julian Assange detention has occurred. According to the
conclusions by the UN Working Group on Human Rights. arbitrary detention, since Mr. Assange was arrested
in London in December 2010, he has been arbitrarily detained by Sweden and the United Kingdom as a
result of the legal measures taken against him by both governments, since he was arrested in London in
December 2010.Mr. Assange was willing to testify to the Swedish authorities if it was ensured that there
would be no extradition to the US. We all know that the reasons for their arrest are different. They respond
to the discomfort of international power springs with the work led by Assange from WikiLeaks. Today
Assange faces a real risk of being extradited to the US where his life is in danger. The UN standing rapporteur
on torture called, indeed, for not to expelling Julian Assange from the embassy of Ecuador in London as that
expel would imply a real risk of serious violations of Mr. Assange rights.

The Government of Ecuador was an example to the world for the protection it was giving to Julian Assange
in his embassy. With shame, we need, today, to strongly deplore Ecuadorian authorities´ decision. What has
occurred contravenes international law as contravenes the requests made by the Inter-American Human
Rights Commission and the United Nations to respect Mr. Assange’s right to maintain his asylum status.

Due to all the above, we call on the British Government to take all the necessary step to ensure that
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, currently under their custody, gets a fair and impartial trial and call, in
addition, to the British authorities not bow to external pressure from the US government and ensure Mr.
Assange will not be extradited to the US. The international struggle for democracy needs people like Julian
Assange and other whistleblowers. The work of Wikileaks for transparency and revealing the real reasons for
decision-making is commendable. We, the under signatories, will always defend freedom, human rights and
will work against the impunity of those who want to silence uncomfortable trues.
