A Peek at Our Weeks
Literacy (Journeys Curriculum)
Phonics- compound words & -ed –ing endings
Comprehension- main idea and details & story structure
Grammar- adverbs
Vocabulary- use of dictionaries and glossaries & prefix non-

Writing (Journeys Curriculum)- Students used an outline to draft an essay to persuade their audience. This included organized
paragraphs, transition words, an introduction, reasons with supporting details and a conclusion. Students were then challenged to think of
possible arguments the audience may have and answer them. You can expect to see these published pieces soon. Next students will shift
back to the narrative genre and begin with a narrative paragraph.

Math- This week we began our Fractions unit. This is a big unit with a lot of skills built in. Our focus as we start is for students to
understand fractions as equal parts, identify numerators, denominators, and a fraction as part of a whole.

Theme- In our 4 weeks of Michigan Government, we will be learning all about Michigan and how it’s Government works. We will discuss
the Michigan Constitution, the importance Pledge of Allegiance, Michigan’s 3 branches and how the city of Dewitt makes its own laws.

In the transition between teachers, tracking homework was not consistently happening. In an effort to reward positive
behavior and work, we will continue to have World Famous Days and forfeit the trimester celebrations. Students will be
rewarded and motivated as a whole group instead of on an individual basis as previously planned.

In addition, I will no longer assess students on traditional weekly spelling tests as Ms. Rosalez had. Instead students will
begin taking weekly assessments that will target our instructed comprehension, vocabulary, phonics (spelling) and grammar
weekly skills. This will allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge without memorizing a specific list
of words.

Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your continued support.
