Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background and purpose of the study,

theoretical and conceptual framework, and statement of the problem,

assumptions, scope and limitations, and definition of terms.

Background and Purpose of the Study

Social Media is websites and applications that enable users to create and

share content or to participate in social networking. Mobile social media refer to

the use of social media on mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet

computers. Mobile social media differ from others because they incorporate the

current location of the user or the time delay between sending and receiving

messages.

According to Priyanka Gupta Social media plays an important role in every

student's life. It is easier and convenient to access information, provide

information and communicate via social media.

Base on Vijay Kumar’s research, Social media is impacting students

positively and negatively. Positive practices of social media increase student’s

social intelligence and understanding of human behaviours. Negative practices

of social media make them materialistic, angry and addicted to too many bad

things.

1
At the university of Zambia, researchers states that Social media has

become ubiquitous and almost inescapable, revolutionizing the way students

communicate, interact and socialize; and has become an integral part of their

social and cultural fabric. Consequently, students are spending a substantial part

of their time on social media. University students and youth are considered the

largest users of these technologies. Despite a growing corpus of literature on the

usage of social media around the world, there is a dearth of research in Zambia

on how social media affects the students’ social life.

Social media has enhanced social networking activities among students.

This has made it possible for people to communicate with one another

notwithstanding the age barrier. With the emergence of social media sites,

people would rather text or even email than to meet in person or face-to-face with

one another (Keller, 2013).

In Africa, a study conducted on the effects of social media on students

revealed that students have more friends on social networking sites than in real

life and they are able to express themselves very well on social media platforms

especially in the case of students who are shy. Students also attested that social

media has affected the way they write because of the shorthand or short form

they use when they are on the social media platforms. Furthermore, the same

study indicated that majority of the students agreed that because of social media

they are not able to even have full concentration on their studies (Ededegbe,

2013).

2
According to Tugberk Kaya (2016). Social networks are one of the most

used communication methods of today's world. Their use in different fields has

been examined in several research studies. This study aims to examine the

effects of social media on student's behaviours which will mainly focus on

Facebook. Whether there is a positive relationship between confidence, social

media participation and social media related behaviors will also be assed with

regard to using Facebook. In order to collect the primary data, a general

scanning model was used to observe attitudes of high school students. The

participants chosen were 362 high school students from level 9 to 12. The

findings highlight that Facebook is used for communication entertainment and

sharing news, pictures and songs. In addition, their Facebook profile picture is

alone and students were aware that swearing is considered a form of

misconduct, which is a good sign. The study also indicates that students were

aware of protecting their social identity as their Facebook shares are not public.

Furthermore, they respect privacy as they do not use their friend's Facebook

account.

Educators and others are interested in the effects of social media on

college students, with a specific focus on the most popular social media

website—Facebook. Two previous studies have examined the relationship

between Facebook use and student engagement, a construct related to positive

college outcomes. However, these studies were limited by their evaluation of

Facebook usage and how they measured engagement. This paper fills a gap in

the literature by using a large sample (N = 2368) of college students to examine

3
the relationship between frequency of Facebook use, participation in Facebook

activities, and student engagement. Student engagement was measured in three

ways: a 19-item scale based on the National Survey of Student Engagement,

time spent preparing for class, and time spent in co-curricular activities. Results

indicate that Facebook use was significantly negatively predictive of engagement

scale score and positively predictive of time spent in co-curricular activities.

Additionally, some Facebook activities were positively predictive of the

dependent variables, while others were negatively predictive (Reynol Junco,

2012).

In today's society, social media have become an almost indispensable

part of daily life, particularly among university students, who are generally heavy

social media users. Social media multitasking has also been increasingly

prevalent. Little, however, is known about how social media usage and social

media multitasking influence the academic performance of university students.

This study examined whether and how these two behaviors predictacademic

performance among university students. From a sample of 348 undergraduate

students at a comprehensive university in Hong Kong, this study found that using

social media for academic purposes was not a significant predictor of academic

performance as measured by cumulative grade point average, whereas using

social media for nonacademic purposes (video gaming in particular) and social

media multitasking significantly negatively predicted academic performance

(Wilfred W.F. Lau, 2017).

4
According to Melissa Tyler (2013). Another reason people are spending as

much time as they do on social media sites is because they can be a great form

of entertainment. Watch videos that people post to their timelines, view pictures,

read stories, and even play games. Whether using a smart phone, a tablet, or a

traditional computer, more and more people are utilizing social media in their

daily lives. Few things have quite as much impact and affect as social media over

the past few years. The sites are certainly a step toward world globalization.

It is possible to find a number of different social media outlets available

today, and one should certainly be able to find something that suits their needs

and lifestyle. From Twitter to Facebook and Google+, something is available for

everyone who wants to connect.

According to Peter Osharive (2015). A direct relationship exists between

Social media usage and the academic performance of students in universities.

However the darker side within technological evolution has resulted in

dilemmas such as the setback of real values of life especially among students

who form the majority of users interacting through the use of social

networking sites. Online social networking sites focus on building and reflecting

social associations among people who share interests and or activities. With so

many social networking sites displayed on the internet, students are tempted to

abandon their homework and reading times in preference for chatting online

with friends. Many students are now addicted to the online rave of the moment,

with Facebook, Twitter etc.

5
Social media is rapidly changing the communication setting of today’s

social world. The emergent of social media is significantly influencing the

academic life of students. Institutions and academician are continually trying with

social media technologies hoping to excite critical thinking skills, collaboration,

and knowledge construction. Today social media has been accepted by higher

institution making it a platform where students connect with their instructors,

fellow students and other higher authorities across the board. This therefore

called for the study to explore and examine how social media has impacted on

students’ academic life. The study implored a qualitative approach in assessing

these impacts. Ten (10) participants were conveniently sampled and interviewed

with a period of two weeks. After studying the phenomena that were of interest to

the study, and transcribing the various responses of the participants the results

reveals that social media is widely used by students of higher institution and that

participant are in support of the idea that social media contribute a significant

quota to the development of their academic life (Raymond Owusu Boateng &

Afua Amankwaa, 2016).

Social media is important to communicate with people, share/ask

information, and follow/evaluate/interpret the events, etc. for everyone at the

present time. The positive and negative effects of social networking sites on

students’ studying and habits were examined in this research. The study was

conducted on 220 students in vocational school of higher education. The data

were collected with the help of a questionnaire designed for gathering the

students’ opinions about the digital technologies and social media. The results

6
revealed that the digital technologies and social networking sites have negative

impact on students’ studying and habits. Some suggestions related to the

findings were presented in the study (Tolga Gok, 2016).

This study aims to know how high schools students nowadays interact and

use social media in their daily life and to know why social media is so important

to their lives.

Theoretical Framework

The study was base from the theory Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT)

of Jay Blumler and Denis McQuail.

This theory discusses how people actively seek out specific media content

for particular purposes and intentional goals. Uses and Gratifications Theory is

an audience-centered approach that focuses on what people do with media, as

opposed to what media does to people.UGT explores how individuals

deliberately seek out media to fulfill certain needs or goals such as

entertainment, relaxation, or socializing.

Narrative method is the process of gathering data of information by

storytelling. After the data of information are gathered, the researchers will write

insights and narrative report.

Narrative research is a term that subsumes a group of approaches that in

turn rely on the written or spoken words or visual representation of individuals, it

can be considered both a research method in itself but also the phenomenon

uner the study. Narrative methods can be considered “real world measures” that

are appropriate when “real life problems” are investigated.

Setting of the Study

The researchers conducted this study to know and determine the

influence of social media in daily life of senior high school student of University of

13
Rizal System-Morong Campus during the School Year 2018-2019. At present,

the University is located at J. Sumulong Street, Barangay San Juan Morong,

Rizal.

The University of Rizal System is a merger of two (2) state colleges and a

University extension campus- the Rizal Polytechnic College, Rizal State College,
