“BASKETBALL VIOLATIONS”

1. Traveling
One of the basic ideas of the sport of basketball is that you have to dribble or
bounce the ball while you are walking or running. When you have stopped dribbling one
of your feet will become your pivot foot. You cannot move your pivot foot or lift it off of
the ground. If you do, this is called traveling.
2. Double Dribble
You only get to dribble once in basketball. If you stop dribbling you have to pass
it to another player or shoot the ball. If you start dribbling again, this is called double
dribbling.
3. Three Seconds
Offensive players are not allowed to stay in the free throw lane, or key, for more
than three seconds. Anytime they leave the key or the ball hits the rim, the three
second count starts over again.
4. Kicking
Players are not allowed to intentionally kick the ball. If a defensive player kicks
the ball, the offensive team will get it out of bounds.
5. Goaltending
Goaltending is when a player interferes with a shot when it is above the rim, but
still on its downward path to the basket, interferes with the ball while on the rim of the
basket, or touches the net or rim while the ball is being shot. If goaltending is called on
the defense, the shot is called good. If goaltending is on the offense, then the shot
does not count and the defense gets the ball.
6. Out of Bounds
The ball is considered out of bounds when it touches the ground outside the
lines of the court. The lines themselves are considered out of bounds as well. It is also
out of bounds if the ball touches a player who has any part of their body touching the
ground out of bounds.
7. Lane Violations
During a free throw shot, players will line up on both sides of the lane. If they
jump into the lane prior to the shot, it will be called a lane violation. If it was an
offensive player, a made shot will not count. If it was a defensive player, a missed shot
will not count and the shooter will get another try.
8. Carrying
Carrying, or palming, is like a double dribble. Players may not put the palm of
their hands under the ball or carry the ball in one hand for a long time. This is similar to
holding the ball and a double dribble.
9. Ten Seconds
The offensive team has 10 seconds to get the ball across half court. If it takes
longer than 10 seconds, then they will lose possession of the ball.
10. Over-and-Back
Once the offensive team has gotten the ball over half court, they cannot go back
into the defender's half court with the ball. This is called over-and-back.
“VOLLEYBALL VIOLATIONS”

1. Consecutive Contacts
A player may not hit the ball 2 times consecutively except when blocking,
provided the contacts take place simultaneously. However, a player may make
consecutive contacts on the team first team contact, provided the contacts occur during
one action.
2. Four Hits
It's a violation for a team to hit the ball 4 times before returning it.
3. Assisted Hit
It's illegal for a player or any object to assist a teammate in playing the ball.
4. Catch
It's illegal to catch or throw the ball. The ball must rebound from the hit.
5. Ball Crossing the Net Outside the Crossing Space
The ball must cross the net within the crossing space. The ball must cross over
the net, between the antennae and their imaginary extension, and without contacting
the ceiling.
6. Contact with the Net
Contact with the net is only a fault if contact is made during the action of playing
the ball or if it interferes with play.
7. Penetration Under the Net
It's permitted for a player to step under the net into the opponent’s court
provided that some part of the penetrating hand or foot is in contact with or is directly
above the center line.
8. Foot Fault
At the moment of service contact or take off for a jump serve, the server must
not touch the court or the ground outside the service zone. After contact, he/she may
step or land outside the service zone or inside the court.
9. Blocking within the Opponents Space
A blocker may place his/her hands beyond the net provided this action doesn't
interfere with the opponents play. It's legal to block beyond the net, provided. The ball
would have crossed the net if not touched by a player and no member of the attacking
team was in position to make a play. The ball is falling near the net and no member of
the attacking team is in position to make a play. Contact with the ball is made after 3
team contacts.
10. Attacking Faults
A back row player completes an attack hit from the front zone, if at the moment of contact,
the ball is entirely above the top of the net. An opponent completes an attack hit on a
served ball, when the ball is in the front zone and the ball is entirely above the top of the
net. The libero completes an attack hit, if at the moment of contact, the ball is entirely
above the top of the net.
