PRINCIPLES USED DURING THE FIELD WORK

 During this field work various principle of field work was used. They were Purposeful
expression of feeling, Non- judgmental attitude, acceptance, confidentiality.
 During this fieldwork in every situation, in every awareness camp the trainee always
wanted the people to interact with them freely and it happened also during every
awareness program the trainee welcomed the every suggestion the people gave and
also shared their experience. Though some time it was not related to the topic or
might not useful but still trainee used to give them time to speak. In this way trainee
used the principle of Purposeful expression of feeling.
 During the interaction with the HRGs the trainee had to use two principles they were
acceptance and non-judge mental attitude. Because they have their own condition
because of which they have choose this line. And though they were sex workers they
are also a part of this society.
 Confidentiality was also one of the principles that used during the fieldwork when the
trainee were come to know any HIV/ AIDS positive patient also with the HRGs

9
OBSERVATION and LEARNING
 Currently the NGO is working in three projects. They are Family Counseling Cell
(FCC), Targeted Interventions (TI) project and Mustard oil industry. There are more
than 50 people employed in this three projects.
 Mustard Oil Project turned out to be a boon for the poor local people. It employed
nearly 15 people in the work activities. Earlier the local people used to sell their
mustard seeds to outsiders at very minimum prices incurring huge loses; but now this
is not the case.
 The NGO runs a Family Counselling Center with two counsellors which have solved
72 cases out of 80 cases till now. They, with the help of local police and
administration, settle all the disputes of the people and also take follow up. They also
engage the trainees in managing such casualties.
 The TI project creates awareness about various sex related diseases among the people,
especially Highly Risky Groups (HRG). Awareness is created for ICTC test; a must
for the HRGs. For conducting these, they appoint peer educators, who, interact with
the village women and bring into their knowledge about various diseases. It is easier
for peer educators to convey the necessary information’s to ladies because they also
have been victims to the diseases or have handled such problems in their family and
society.
 Interaction session with the HRGs brought to our knowledge the struggle they do
every day to live their life. They mostly choose this profession because of poor
financial condition. The NGO cannot stop this but they regularly bring the members
for ICTC tests. The NGO conduct awareness program on various sex related diseases.
Peer educators help the HRGs in every possible way.
 The NGO had to really work hard in educating the people about the Ambedkar
scheme for poor ladies; to make them strong and stand on their feet. A women weaver
cooperative society was also formed under this scheme named RANGAM; a
showroom for Mishing cloths. The ladies could showcase their talent and also the
society helped them to grow financially.

10
 The local ladies with the help and support of the NGO run a Cycle Bank which
provides loan to the poor ladies to buy cycles.
 Arsenic is a major problem in Majuli and it causes various kind of diseases, such as-
skin diseases, teeth problem and also cause cancer. After observing the situation and
discussing with the NGO workers the trainee decided to contact with the Public
Health Dept. and have awareness sessions on this issues
 The NGO workers conduct demo sessions to show the local people the differences
between the arsenic water and water without arsenic. The demo sessions turned out to
be a success as the people showed interest in having filtered water. Individual filters
in households would be costly investment for the poor people, NGO suggested public
water filters. The people were also educated about the processes to make the filters.
 An awareness camp on Water Born diseases and hygienity for the students and an
interaction session with the parents on family planning was conducted in the Gowal
Gaon by the trainees. Even with their limited knowledge and outlook the students
gave full interest in the camp.
 An awareness camp was also held in RANGAMabout various sex related diseases and
know-how to escape the same. Irrespective of their background, they tried to gain in
the maximum possible information to protect their selves from the diseases and shared
their views and experiences without any hesitation. With their active participation the
awareness program turned into an interaction session.
 The trainee had also entry the datum collected by the peer educators of the agency
regarding the TI project. Such as the number of new HRGs found in the community,
number of ICTC done by the peer educators, number of distribution of condoms to the
HRGs or FSW, medical checkup of the HRGs done, any new positive HIV cases, etc.

FEEDBACK

During the one month internship period, students gain several practical curriculum of social
work which help them to go in depth and understand social work. The students interact with
various people with variety of problems and get an idea of what brutal situations actually
prevail in the society. The office environment is completely people oriented, the trainees
always got a helping hand when in need. The trainees were accompanied by the field
supervisors, who continuously monitored the activities of the trainees and shared their
experiences. The field work taught the trainees the art of convincing people and handle their
problems with care.

12
CONCLUSION

NGOs works are praiseworthy. Currently handling 3 projects - FCC, TI and the mustard oil.
They are also engaged in development activities of the people of Majuli. Working with the
people of the villages on topics like sex related diseases is not at all a easy job. It, at times,
might hurt their sentiments and feelings. The NGO is also working on child marriages/ early
marriages which has become a common concept in Majuli. For minimizing these problems,
the NGO can have awareness programs in the schools with the high school students and show
them the bitterness of early marriage.

The family counselling cell is doing very well as they have already solved 72 cases out of 80.
The NGO also doing good when it comes to give a platform to the local weaver. They
motivate them to do the business, help them to do it in every possible way. They are also
trying their best to solve the damages which the arsenic water causes. Overall the NGO is
putting in their best in Majuli.
