Statement of Purpose

Since a very young age, it has always occurred to me how the actual need of law,
rules and regulations are being determined amidst an emerging and ever-changing
world. Even though the Banks are governed by specific rules and regulations, but
how are laws regulating it. How are certain securities dealings regulated and how
are they managed. The same thing goes with other issues relating to the internet
or the environment or the rights of prisoners and terrorism.

In my tenth standard when I studied the character of Portia, in Merchant of

Venice, the traits she had of a skilful advocate by turning the decision on arguing
about specific performance lead me to read about the real-life legal luminaries. I
was fascinated when I studied the work and the contribution made by Mahatma
Gandhi and Nelson Mandela in the legal field. It was through the medium of their
profession they caused the amendment of the laws and brought changes in the
political scenario. It was at that time I knew that Law would be my Professional
calling.

During my time at law College I realised that this field is not only exciting but
also demanding. The knowledge, experience and opportunities I had acquired
while attending Law College had ultimately challenged my mind into thinking in
ways I had never done before. In those five years, there were specific subjects
that really caught my interest such as Company Law, Intellectual Property Rights
and Contracts. It was in the fourth year when I did a moot and an internship
concerning Corporate Law that triggered me to know more about this field. On
the most practical level, the experience I had gained in the fourth year had
increased my self-esteem, self-efficacy, confidence and comfort in my advocacy
as a future corporate lawyer. As there was an absence in the curriculum for an in-
depth study of corporate law, especially in mergers and acquisition I always
yearned to learn more about it.

While reading more about the field, it intrigued me at how an Indian automobile
manufacturer merged with a Japanese car manufacturer which led to the
formation of Maruti Suzuki. This merger made Maruti Suzuki one of the leading
automobile company in India. Even the most significant acquisition of
Mannesmann by Vodafone AirTouch PLC made it the world’s largest mobile
operator as well as the biggest acquisition in the history. I then realised that any
form of Merger or Acquisitions is not only the most significant event in the life
of the firm but has dramatic consequences on all the constituencies that are a part
of it and the world at large. The corporate sectors all over the world are
restructuring its operations through different types of consolidation strategies to
face the challenges posed by the new pattern of globalization. The role of an
Advocate now, has significantly increased to an exceptional level in this field.

Doing this LL.M programme will help me understand the fundamentals

associated with mergers and acquisitions. While pursuing my career in this field,
I have realised that I need to enhance my knowledge and experience for building
a successful career. I seek to deepen my understanding of merger and acquisitions
and continue my research so that I can use my findings and knowledge for a better
future. In today’s time, a Corporate Advocate must keep their Clients updated on
business laws and regulations at both national and international levels. The
programme will help me in giving a thorough knowledge and understanding
about the legal concepts and help me in specializing in the field of mergers and
acquisitions.
Your LL.M Program in Mergers and Acquisitions is my first choice for further
graduate study not only because of the prestige of your program but also the
various subjects it covers in the course which will be an enriching experience.
Although I am currently working in a corporate firm I still want to continue
setting new goals and working towards achieving them. I want to enhance my
knowledge for my growth and hence this programme will be the best for my
development. Acceptance in your college would allow me to achieve several of
my central career goals. My zeal to learn more stands as an excellent support for
me to excel in this programme. The focus of this institution makes it the ideal
environment in which I can bring my aims to fruition. No other institute is as
intrinsic to my needs, and no other institution could give me the greater honour
than to be among its alumni.
