Environmental Dependency

Final Lecture – Managing Relationships

Gartner Hype Cycle – increased hype at the start, which then decrease through disillusionment, and
then through plateau of enlightenment people realize the applications, up to plateau of productivity.

DHL´s model, is different since there are technological and social trends.

Three Vs of Big Data:

- Volume
- Velocity – real time, much more agile than competitors
- Variety – high variety of information

Sales, Inv, Consumer, Location and Time (big data for SCM).

Blockchain – data stored in a central network (everyone collaborates with that network). Protects
data from corruption. Advantages;

- Traceability
- Compliance
- Flexibility
- Stakeholder Management

Use Case- IBM and Maersk

AI – Machine Learning (feelings, and behave, and interpret things like humans)

Don’t be too data driven, AI is better than it at you. Replacing many jobs, example is secretaries and
assistants (not biased). Ethical risks are a big problem with AI, just because we can should we do it?
Look at slides for other problems (pg 24). Threat to democracy the fact that we are not voting the
people that use AI, they grow there.

Circularity is the future.

We+re more the passenger on the train travelling along the supply chain rather than the metro type
of map view of being in total control of the supply chain. You have to acknowledge that you don’t
know what is happening really far up and far down in the supply chain.

Zara – no more departments, every function can interact with each other. They need more
responsiveness.

POTENTIAL QUESTION – how to apply technologies to solver a problem. Can use case examples, eg
Zara.

NO CASES OF DOUBT

Give examples of circular economy.

Nexus suppliers – are not first tier. Could disrupt the entire supply chain.

Alternative Views to Organisational theories

e.g. social construct

The environment determines the best organizational form to use:

- Stable environment mechanistic form

- Unstable environment the other (I think they said organic).

Resource dependency based on scarcity

WHY DO ORGS NEED TO ADAPT SUMMARY:

1) Adapt to the value of internal groups and external society (legitimacy)
Institutionalized by the environmental contexts
Pressures (coercive, normative – values do in certain way, mimetic – copying best practice)

2)
Social Legitimacy – reward organization for adopting acceptable practices and
structures.
3) Historical institutionalism
