The internship opportunity I had with DTL Engineering for the last six months was a very good
experience where I was given the chance to learn and understand more about the industry. I
am also grateful for having the chance to meet so many wonderful people and professionals
who led me through this internship period.
I would like to use this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and special thanks to the
Mr.Keith Ho the Senior Designer of DTL Engineering for giving me the opportunity to join the
organization and guiding me through this internship.

PREFACE

I am currently taking my Bachelor Degree of Arts in Interior Architecture in Limkokwing


University. In this semester I have to complete 120 days of working days work experience in
an Interior Architecture Organization as part of my Industry Training module.
After looking for roughly a month and went to several interviews, I have decided to do my
internship at DTL Engineering which is located at Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur. It is a small firm
with 4 staffs and 1 admin that was established in March 2000. Small firm like DTL Engineering
give me the chance to learn more because of various exposure to the industry that can be
rarely seen in bigger firm that has their own department for each section.
During the internship I have come to understand more regarding design and technical
specification that can only be gain through experience.
In this report I have describe all my experiences during internship The report contains an
overview of the internship company and the activities tasks, and projects that I have been
worked on during my internship.

INTRODUCTION

As part of the module practical training and report 341 in this semester, we are required to
undertake a minimum of 60 to 120 days work experience in Interior/Architecture organization
as part of the program. The work experience is to be recorded on the official Log Sheets that
is enclosed in this outline. Students are to use a separate Work Experience Log Book Project
Sheet for each project and record the categories of experience, levels of experience and
number of hours. Each sheet needs to be signed and dated by both the project supervisor and
the student.

We are encouraged to work in a variety of practices and related fields during their studies so
they can explore the options that are available to them and to develop their areas of interest.
Filling out the Log Book is not meant to be an onerous task and generally it is best if students
spend time regularly updating their records. One of the main purposes of the Project Sheets
is to help students evaluate the type of work experience they are receiving and assess
whether this experience suits their goals and aspirations.

The Summary Sheet should be completed and then submitted along with the Project Sheets
to the Work Experience Coordinator by the end of the first semester. When we have
completed our work experience we are expected to prepare a Report addressing a number of
practical experiences during placement including Log Book as mentioned above. A working
Diary is also an essential item for the student to record daily tasks undertaken within a
particular project on decision-making and comments made prior to stage of work. It is also as
a reminder to review whether the decision has been implemented or not and caused of any
actions made and why.

DAY 1

JUNE OFFICE
First day at work, we arrive at 9 o’clock and met Mr.Chan who is one of our supervisor. He
showed us around the office and introduce us to a full staff colleague called Shanice and
admin called Ms.Teh. I’m doing this internship with one of my classmate Mei, she sat beside
me in the office.
After waiting till 10 o’clock our supervisor Mr.Keith came and brief us on what to do, My first
project is to design a Law firm office. The 2d autocad has been done by Mr.Keith and I just
need to do the 3d visualization, The first thing that I have to do is to do research regarding
office design because this is my first time doing office design.
After doing the research I start to build the office structure in sketchup and start with the
signage design and furniture modelling till 6 o’clock that day.

DAY 2

I am done with the signage design and need to continue to build the 3d modelling, there are
4 mains area that need to be design
 General Workspace

While doing the modelling for the furniture I need to pay more attention to the dimension
which I didn’t do during my previous projects.
While I’m almost done with the general workspace I started to choose materials for the office
furniture, After that done with that I sent Mr.Keith my design and waiting for his reply and
while waiting for it ,I started to do the meeting room modelling.

In the morning I have received reply from Mr.Keith regarding the general workspace design,
there are few things that I need to amend.
 Signage design need to make it more simple and change the font smaller
 Color scheme need to be change
 Change the cabinet to built-in one
 Add details to make looks more realistic
 Change the partition to see-through semi partition
Then I continue to amend the design and send my progression to Mr.Keith through whatapps
because he usually is busy with site visit and send our progression to him by the end of the
day.

DAY 4

JUNE OFFICE
This morning I continue to amend things that are left and send to Mr.Keith my progression
for the general workspace area, while waiting for his reply I continue to do meeting room and
pantry area.
In his reply he seems to like the general workspace design already and ask me to proceed to
do the pantry design, while there are few this to amend for the meeting room
 Add power points to the meeting room table
 Make sliding white board in front of the cabinet
 Change cabinet woodgrains to softer one
 Add frosted sticker to the glass
After done wiith the meeting room changes, I continue to do research regarding office pantry
and start to design.
Today I also learn more regarding material because there are one supplier from admira come
to the office and give us more info regarding laminate product.

DAY 5
ARCHIDEX
Today we need to attend archidex which is an annual exhibition for architects and designer
to know the newest products and to up to date regarding the newest technology.
This year archidex is being held at KLCC convention centre, we arrive at there at around 11
o’clock and Mr.Keith ask us to join him for lunch. After finished our lunch around 12 o’clock
we went to register and get the tag.
First we start exploring the interior section and start collecting catalogue of the products that
we think we might use in the future, this is my first time to come to this kind of exhibition. I
myself really enjoy it because we can learn a lot of things and know a lot regarding a material.
This kind of exposure is really useful for my internship as one of the thing that I want to
improve is to know where we can find this types of materials or products.
We went back to office at around 4.30 p.m and start to arrange the catalogue that we collect
just now to the office material shelves.

DAY 6

JUNE OFFICE
Today I need to continue the pantry area as I have completed the general workspace and
meeting room design and just need to wait for the client feedback. While building the
modelling for the pantry , Mr.Keith also asked me to design the toilet area.
Seems like Mr.Keith doesn’t really like the pantry design and I need to amend a lot of things
and also change some furniture sizes. Today surprisingly he came to the office and teach us
on how to improve our autocad skill because usually only the other supervisor Mr.Chan and
Mr.Loo that come to the office.
After his lesson I continue to amend the pantry design, this time I’m stuck with the ideas and
he suggest me to sketch or do some research. I kept on doing research till the end of the day.

DAY 7

JUNE OFFICE
Today I started my day by doing the pantry design after all night research, while nervously
sent to Mr.Keith, He seems to like the new design and suggest me to change few things
 Change the bar table height to 1050mm
 Add mirror to the wall to make the space looks bigger
Because the space for the pantry is actually quite small
 Need to change the hanging picture to abstract black and white
And for the toilet design
 Need to change the tiles to 300x600
 Need to add grouting to the tiles
Then I continue to edit the things that I need to amend.

JUNE OFFICE
Today I continue to amend the things that I need to amend for the pantry and toilet and
during the afternoon Mr.Keith bring Me and Mei to one of his previous residential projects,
he explained to us that nowadays the cabinet is always do till the ceiling and the cabinet door
nowadays also don’t have any handle.
After that we went back to office and continue to do our work, I have finished amend the
pantry and the toilet and now continue with the directors rooms. For the directors room just
like usual I started with doing research and I start to do the modelling while waiting for the
clients reply regarding the other spaces.

This morning I continue with doing the directors room and received reply from the clients and
I need to change
 color scheme to be lighter in color
 Use grey colour vinyl
 Signage use line design
After done with the changes I continue to do design for the director rooms, one of my problem
during this project is we need to use our own laptop to do rendering and my laptop takes a
lot of time to do rendering and Mr.Keith said that the office is going to buy new laptop soon.
While waiting for the directors room rendering I go and organize the catalogue in the material
shelves.
During this time I also help one of my colleague Shanice to trace logo for her project since it’s
a bit rush, today I go back a little late to help her till 8 pm.

DAY 10

JUNE OFFICE
Today I’m done with rendering the directors room and Mr.Keith already sent it to the clients
and now just need to wait for their reply, while waiting I continue to render the amended
general workspace area.
During this time Mr.Chan told us to reorganized the material shelves as it is a bit messy,
because I am free while rendering,I go and organized it, there are a lot of old catalogue that
need to be throw away and be replace with the new one that we get from archidex before.
While organizing the catalogue I also learn a few new thing like the specification that I think
is very useful, I think my self still lacks understanding in term of specification and try to learn
when I have the time.

This morning I’m done with the rendering for the amended general workspace for the clients,
Mr.Keith has sent it to the client and ask me to trace plan for KTV project.
After tracing this plan I encounter a problem to save it to pdf to scale, because I usually print
it not to scale, so I decided to ask Mr.Keith to teach me how to plot it to scale. Luckily, he
gladly explain to me and my friends on how it works. Even tough I am still a little bit confuse
I think I understand it quite well now. And I went back at around 7 o’clock after done tracing
the plan.

KENNY’S RESIDENTIAL
Today I need to go to a residential area in Sri Petaling with my friend to do site visit and do
measurement, I’m actually a bit nervous this morning when doing site visit because it is my
first time and my supervisor is not there. I’m afraid that I might forget to take some
measurement, but everything turn out to be just fine.
After I go back to the office I draw the plan and started to do some space planning. The client
want to convert the upper area to gym.

I decided to continue my work on Saturday because I’m afraid that my progression is too slow
and the supervisor said that we need to update our client every week.
During this time I continue to work on the space planning for the space, there are 3 mains

Today I still continue to work on the space planning and sent my progression to Mr.Keith and
he asked me to start building the structure and he will amend the plan that I have done.
I also continue to do research regarding the gym equipment that might be needed, and how
the arrangement should be by considering the comfort of the occupants and safety.
During this time I also tried to improve my sketchup skill because the result from my previous
project didn’t really satisfy me. I decide to improve myself by self-learning.

This morning Mr.Keith have sent me the updated plan and want me continue to do the
modelling, I didn’t manage to finish the modelling today because during the afternoon I also
help Mr.Chan to count the material needed for other projects.
Our colleague Shanice that already have experience in helping Mr.Chan to count the area
teaches us how to do it. I didn’t find it to be difficult but appear to be just a bit confusing
because of the numbers.

Today I’m done with the modelling for the Gym area and just need to apply the material which
takes a long time for me because of my lack of experience I spent long time to make the
material looks realistic.
Today I also learnt that as an interior designer we need to open our self to different kind of
exposure, me myself never really go to gym to exercise that is why I’m struggling with this
project because I need to understand how to make the space more comfortable from user
view.

This morning I’m done with the modelling for the gym area and will continue with the muay
thai boxing area and ballet room. Mr.Keith ask me to produce and animation of the space and
no need to render first because rendering actually takes a lot of time.
but before that there are few things that I need to amend for the gym area
 Change the flooring colour to darker tone
 Add gym poster for motivation
 Change backdrop design
 Add cabinet for small pantry
After done editing I continue searching for how to make the animation, I only found out that
it’s actually quite easy to create the animation. I have decided to continue tomorrow because
it’s already 8 pm now and I need to go back to cyberjaya.

KENNY’S RESIDENTIAL
Today I continue with the modelling for the muay thai boxing and ballet room, I need to
finished the modelling as soon as possible because i need to continue to do the animation to
show the overall space.
By doing the animation actually is very useful because we can show to the client how the
overall atmosphere of the space feel like. Mr.Keith also showed us how to used intericad
because he thinks our rendering by using sketchup takes a lot of time.
Today I also learn the advantages and disadvantages of the program that we are using, just
like intericad and sketchup. Software program like intericad is not a free software and we
need to pay for it. In terms of the 3d libraries, sketchup warehouse have more models that
are up to date compare to intericad that have few collections.
By understanding the advantages and disadvantages we can actually find the most suitable
program that fits us.

After done with the animation and waiting for the client’s reply, Mr.Keith asked me to do the
elevation drawing for June office.

In the afternoon I helped Mr.Loo in counting areas needed for his project just like last time

This morning I need to trace a plan for new project after being briefed by Mr.Keith

I started by doing research and do the building structure on sketchup.

Today I continue doing my research regarding the design and started to do the modelling for
the bedroom wardrobe, Mr.Keith did show me the reference from the client. I did the
modelling in no time and I’m surprised that my speed in modelling things have improved
compare to last time.
After I’m done with modelling, I render it for 30 minutes which is quite fast compare to my
previous project because the file is smaller. Today I learned that in sketchup there are model
info where we can purge unused to make the sketchup file smaller because its going to delete
the unused information to make the file lighter.
I sent to Mr.Keith my progression for the wardrobe and he told me to change the wood
texture and wardrobe colour to white colour.

This morning I continue to do the wet kitchen because this project is a bit rush so need to
continue working on Sunday, So today i start to do the modelling for the wet kitchen after I’m
done with the modelling I continue to do the rendering.
But this time I faced a problem because the black quardstone material that I used always
disappear, I spent like 4-5 hours just to solve this problem. After searched on the internet I
realized the problem is actually the bump and displacement setting.
Now I have understand more setting of the vray sketchup to make the material more realistic,
the difference between bump and displacement is also important Bump mapping is a surface
shader, meaning that it does not actually alter the physical geometry of an object
While displacement is applied to the surface geometry The grayscale values of that image are
then used to physically displace the geometry. White represents the maximum displacement
along the given axis, while black represents no displacement.

This morning I started to do the modelling for the dry kitchen and Mr.Keith treated us to lunch
this afternoon. After lunch he brought us to a show room near our office and show us around,
The show room design is really nice even though it’s just a small unit.
From my point of view one of the way to learn is through observation, just from the
showroom observation I can learn a few things like how the carpet placement under the bed
actually matter, the small detail like curtain color and wall laminate material can give off
different vibe and atmosphere.

Today I continue doing the dry and wet kitchen modelling and tried to finish everything before
go back, so the only things that left is to do the rendering when I go back. Because this Friday
is going to have business trip on Thursday I need to finish everything on next Wednesday
including the elevation.

The thing that I need to do this morning is to do the modelling for the tv cabinet, the client
just want a simple design. I finished the modelling in no time and start to render.
However when I show Mr.Keith the design and he asked me to change it because the design
looks complicated and I need to rethink for new simpler idea. After I’m done redoing the
model I show Mr.Keith the design and he seems to like it now. So I continue to do the
rendering and compile everything for Mr.Keith send it to the client and now I’m waiting for
the client’s reply to see whether the design is his taste.

This afternoon Mr.Keith asked me to continue doing the elevation because the client is
already like the design, so basically I have to do the elevation for

I need to finished the elevation by today, luckily In previous project I have done elevation
drawing before this time around I manage to do it faster.

This morning I showed Mr.Keith the elevation that I have done and he just edit the line weight
a little and explain how line weight is important and said I have improved my 2d drawing in
term of detailing and speed.
After hearing Mr.Keith explanation now i understand the importance of line weight, it doesn’t
only contain a lot of information but also make it looks nicer. Interior designer need to pay
attention to the detail even if its just the line weight.

Today Mr.Keith asked me to help him to find furniture for Charles residential and ask about
the price. After I’m done with the Charles Residential project he asked me to trace a floor plan
for a new project and give me time to do research for the next project.

Today I continue to do research for the design while Mr.Keith is doing the space planning for
the show room. During the afternoon one of the supplier from Kian furniture come to our
office and do presentation about their products.
After the presentation I continue doing my research for the show room, I feel more pressure
for this project because I can feel Mr.Keith really want to get this project and I don’t want to
disappoint him and tried to do my best.

because this is so important.
I would like to improve my presentation skill when I have the chance, just like how I improve

I find this kind of discussion to be very useful because we can improve our knowledge and
also the design. One of the most important things in discussion is that we need to learn to
listen to others advice and so that we can improve ourselves.
Mr.Loo asked me and Shanice to present our design and explain about it. At first I’m actually
quite taken aback because I’m not used to present without preparation in front of people
even though I had did many presentation before. Luckily, I managed to do well and they give

Today we received the plan of the site from email and Mr.Keith suggest us to start from
bubble diagram because the space it quite big. Me and mei discuss about the concept that
we are going to use and the space planning. This afternoon we follow our admin to Mid Valley
to buy Christmas decoration because Christmas is coming soon. We bought Christmas tree
and few decorations to decorate our office.

Today we started to build the structure and the modelling, we spent a lot of time doing the
modelling because the seating arrangement is in hotdesk style we suggest different types of
seating arrangements. Hotdesk itself means the practice in an office of allocating desks to
workers when they are required or on a rotating system, rather than giving each worker their
own desk.

This morning we continue to do the modelling, we faced some difficulties when doing the Ceo
room because Mr.Loo did mention that the Ceo don’t want the table to be just like other
ordinary table.
So we come up with a very futuristic curvy design but we have difficulties in doing the model
because it is actually quite difficult to do curvy model on sketchup and we need to use 3dmax.
Since its been a long time I used 3d max I have forgotten some of the command and need to
refresh my memory.

Today I have done building the modelling for the ceo room and proceed to do the workstation
curvy table. Before going back from work today we started to decorate our office with
Christmas decoration. We have a really good time doing the decoration because we do it
together and enjoy our time.

Today we started to worked on the technical innovation centre modelling and need to speed
up our progression because next Wednesday is the submission day.
This afternoon I have to help Mr.Chan to do elevation for Kithcen cabinet, we can feel
everyone are rushing to finished the project before Chinese new year and Mr.Keith said
December always have been the busiest month of the year.

started to do the rendering for the ceo room. I realized that both my skill and speed have
improve so much compare to before I do my internship.

Today we have finished the modelling for technical innovation centre and proceed doing the
reception area. It will just be a small reception area because the client actually didn’t request
for one and we didn’t want people from outside can see inside the office directly so we
decided to suggest one reception area that can also be waiting area for guest.

Today I have completed doing the reception area and will proceed with the workstation, there
are few design that we need to built for the modelling and some takes up a lot of time because
of the curvy design.
Today Mr.Loo brought us to eat near sri petaling area, I find him very nice because he doesn’t
mind to share his personal experience and always gave us a lot of advice. He said being
friendly is one of the most important thing if we want to succeed in this field.

Today I need to go site visit project and do some measurement. This is the first time meet the
client alone without my supervisor, the client turn out to be very nice and showed me around
the office. She also send me some reference photo that they like for me which I think I very

Today I started to do the plan and modelling for the pantry and I’m have difficulties in building
the kitchen cabinet because of the curvy partition. I spent a lot of time building the cabinet
model.
After I’m done with the cabinet I proceed building the model for the table bench and table
chair as requested by the client they want to use a bench type.
I tried to look for the bench table and chair because we need to find the affordable one
because for these project we have a tight budget.

In the evening we celebrate our last day of work with the supervisor at bar near our office,

there.
I feel happy and sad at the same time today, I’m happy I finished my internship but sad
because I have to part with them. We spent the last six months together just like family and I

LESSON LEARNED
The lesson that I have learned during my internship :

The internship during the last six month is one of the big achievement that I have done, I
experience and learn a lot of things that I haven’t learnt in my previous semester. Before this
I have a lot of questions regarding how the industry works and during my internship I have
somehow figure out the answers to all my questions.

One of the most memorable lesson that I have learned during this internship is that we need
to always up to date to the latest trend and technology because when I’m doing my first
project for june office I did the cabinet design with handles , My supervisor Mr.Keith said it is
not wrong but nowadays the design is without the handle. At first I thought it is okay for intern
not to know this kind of things, but then one of the now intern that came in 3 months after
we do our internship know about this.I realize how ignorance I’m and start to reflect on
myself.

One of the most important thing in working is communication, during this internship I realize
how meaning full is the word “good job”. Even though our office is just a small office with 4
people, we have 3 supervisor that have different project each, so usually we are always busy
and need to work overtime to meet the deadline. We always show our supervisor our
progression and some morale support is actually really helpful for me during hard times and
can make me feels being appreciated for my hardwork.

During this internship I also learn to express myself more, I’m not the quite type but I have
difficulties in expressing what is in my thought and when someone ask me to judge their
design i always afraid to express my honest thought because I afraid it will hurt their feeling
If it doesn’t looks good. But then I understand that I prefer someone will be honest with my
design eventhough the review is not good because that way we can still improve it.

The things that I improve the most during my intership is my 2d and 3d skill, I can really feel
the difference by comparing my previous project with the last one. Throughout my internship
period I have seen what elements of my career I would like to pursue in the future.

RECOMMEDATION
After six month of doing industial practice, I had earned and gained valuable experience at
DTL Engineering. I would like to share some suggestion and recommendation

Recommendation for the company :


I believe DTL Engineering is one of the best place for interns to learn. They might be just
small firm with few staffs but they have supervisor that are willing to teach and explain to
the interns if they don’t understand. They can help intern to improve and develop their skills
because the supervisor have years of experience in the industry.

Recommendation for future interns:


I recommend them to looks for small firm instead of a big firm because in small firm we
need to do do from a-z so we can learn everything compare to big firm that have their own
department for each section.
Last but not least I suggest the future interns to write your diary daily if it’s possible. I write
my diary once week because I have lots of things to do and because of that I spent a lot of
times on the diary because I need to recall my memories.

CONCLUSION

The internship during the last six months at DTL Engineering was a great chance for
me to learn and gain experience in the professional field, I consider myself lucky as I get the
chance to worked and meet wonderful people there. Throughout my intership there I have
learn a lot regarding how the industry works and have improved myself a lot.
This internship help me to understand what my strength and weakness are, I believe
by understanding my strength and weakness can help me to improve in the future. , I took
every advices in positive ways as it will be useful guidance for me to improve myself and avoid
making the same mistake again. Apart from that, I had also developed my technical drawing
skills through various drawings I had done within my internship there.

I believe everything that I had learned during this internship will help me in the
future, It also gave me some insight and motivation to pursue my career in the future.
