Rationale for Standard 1: Learner Development
Artifact name: IEP writeup
Standard:
The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning
and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social,
emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and
challenging learning experiences.
What the Standard means to me:
Learners grow at different times and at different paces. It is up to me as an educator to
recognize what is affecting each students growth in the classroom, rather it is cognitive,
linguistic, social, emotional, or physical, it is my job to know my learners and create
instruction based off my learner's needs.
Indicator:
1(k) Values the input and contribution of families, colleagues, and other professionals in
understanding and supporting each learner’s development.
Description of the artifact:
I was able to sit in on an IEP meeting for a student in my secondgrade classroom. The team at
this meeting included the mom, principal, special education teacher, classroom teacher, case
manager, and myself. I was able to hear from each person in the room on the growth of this
particular child, and what their next steps were to meeting his needs. As I was listening, I was
taking notes on the different things that were being said, as well as, the different things that I
will need to be aware of when I am the classroom teacher in this situation. After taking my
notes, I did a reflection of my time at the meeting and what my thoughts were. This reflection
included what I heard, what it meant to me, and also what I need to be prepared for as a
classroom teacher.
Rationale:
During this meeting, I was able to interact with parents, colleagues, and other professionals in
order to talk about the strengths and weaknesses of one student in the classroom. After
listening to the input of everyone on his team, I was able to think about the different things that
still need to be done in order to support this student as well as challenge him. We discussed
learning goals and behavioral goals that need to be put into place for this student which shows
that I was aware of the learner as a whole and not just what they can do for assignments. In my
write up, I addressed how this student's behaviors are not really an issue anymore and how we
need to be more focused on his learning goals. This artifact shows that I am proficient in this
standard because I was able to listen to multiple peoples input and then discuss what I thought
was best for the student going forward in the classroom.
