Rationale for Standard 3: Learning Environments
Artifact name: Fill your bucket
Standard:
The teacher works with learners to create environments that support individual and
collaborative learning, encouraging positive social interaction, active engagement in learning,
and self motivation.
What the Standard means to me:
The environment in which a student is learning is essential to their growth. It is crucial that the
teacher sets up an environment that encourages communication, motivation, sharing of ideas,
and collaborative learning.
Indicator:
3 (o) Values the role of learners in promoting each other’s learning and recognizes the
importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate of learning.
Description of the artifact:
This artifact was based off from a read aloud titled, How Full Is Your Bucket? After doing the
read aloud, the students and I brainstormed ideas on how we could be bucket fillers and the
different things we could do to fill each other's buckets. After brainstorming the students each
got their own bucket and wrote down a thing or two that they could do to fill each other's
buckets. I was so amazed at the students and their work with this that I created a bulletin board
to show them and the other students in the school that we are bucket fillers.
Rationale:
I decided to do this activity because it was getting towards the middle of the year, and even
though we have always had a pretty good learning environment, it was clear that students were
starting to get sick of each other. I wanted to reinforce the idea that we are bucket fillers and it
is important to be respectful. If we are filling peoples buckets than our bucket is also getting
full. I wanted the students to know that when we have full buckets we do our best learning.
Through this assignment, I helped the students remember the importance of having healthy
relationships with our classmates so that we can all reach our full potential together. By doing
the activity and creating the bulletin board, it really helped reestablish our learning community,
value each other, recognize the importance of our relationships, and it gets us back on track for
the rest of the year.
