participated in a walk that raised
$5,009 for the cancer victims and
survivors.
Relay For Life is an inspiring
community event that gives everyone
a chance to celebrate cancer survivors
and caregivers; remember loved
ones lost to cancer, and fight back by raising
awareness and funds to support the work of
Cancer Society.
Eighteen members of the Health and Fitness
group of AIAI participated in the 18-hours
walk to raise funds for the people living with
cancer. The walk started on Saturday, April 6 at
2 p.m. at Lovelock track in Sandringham, a part
of the Wesley Community Centre and finished
on Sunday, April 7 at 7 a.m. with participants
taking turns in walks. The walk was open to any
level of fitness who can walk or run around a
track.
“To make it more fun and exciting the team
decided to wear Indian tricolours not just to
represent our nationality but it also signifies
sacrifice, peace and prosperity, which is a true
sense we combined it well in our thoughts and
action,” President of AIAI, Narendra Bhana
told The Indian Weekender.
“We also had a tent set up for the team to rest
overnight as they were taking turns. It was more
like a celebration for a team,” Mr Bhana added.

AIAI was awarded as Silver Fundraisers for
raising $5,009 in one event for the cancer
victims.

More than three deported Indian
students could return back after
visa on compassionate grounds

A
fter a prolonged and jaded struggle of
a group of deported Indian students
who caught the national attention
by taking sanctuary in Auckland’s Unitary
Church two years ago, at least more than three
are set to return to the country after Associate
Minister for Immigration Kris Fafoi approved
their application for a visa on compassionate
grounds.
An official press release from the office of
the Kiwi-Indian MP Labour’s Priyanca Radha
Krishnan and Dr Deborah Russell on Thursday,
April 18, confirmed that three Indian students
who were caught up in immigration fraud and
subsequently faced deportation have been
granted a reprieve on compassionate grounds
by the Government.
However, it could be a possibility that the
number of students could be more than three.
It is important to note that the case of four
students in the church sanctuary is part of a
group of seven students, whose case, Associate
Minister of Immigration Kris Faafoi has agreed
to look on the compassionate grounds.
The Indian Weekender tried speaking with
immigration lawyer Alastair McClymont who
was representing many of deported students to
get a confirmation on the number of students,
who refused confirm or reject any suggestion
that the number of students could be more
than three.

However, Tourism Malaysia is committed
to turning around the recent fall in numbers
with an ambitious goal of bringing 30 million
tourists by 2020 and is hosting a number of
roadshows to project the image of Malaysia as
a safe and popular holiday destination.
Tourism Malaysia Director-General Datuk
Musa Yusof was in Auckland leading a travel
trade mission to reinforce the message that
Malaysia presented an attractive holiday
proposition to New Zealand travellers.
Speaking on occasion Mr Yusof said,
“Malaysia has long-standing ties with New
Zealand that extends to the Peace Corps,
education and cultural exchanges as well as

students who were victims of fraud
by dodgy offshore immigration agents.
Meanwhile, Labour MPs Dr Deborah

been advocates for the students and helped with
the four cases where the Ombudsman found

New Zealand, expressed their rejoice on the
outcome.

those students would choose to return
back to the country after losing around $30,000
presenting an attractive holiday proposition to
New Zealanders.”
This year NZ and Malaysia are completing
62 years of formal diplomatic relations between
the two countries and tourism has played an
integral role in forging the relationship between
the two countries and is continuing to grow.
New Zealand is an important tourist source
market for Malaysia.
In 2018, a total of 50,698 New Zealanders
visited Malaysia, which contributed to the
overall 25.8 million international tourist
arrivals to Malaysia. Malaysia aims to bring in
60,000 New Zealanders to Malaysia next year.
There are currently 7 flights every week
offering 2,009 seats from New Zealand to
Malaysia.

lucky?
I n early 2017, a group of nine Indian students
had taken sanctuary in Auckland’s unitary
church against Immigration New Zealand
(INZ) deportation orders, causing a stir in
national media.
However, what has mostly receded from the
public attention is that during the middle of
2016, INZ has issued deportation notices to at
least hundreds of students as an easy scapegoat
to the rut in New Zealand’s immigration
system, and a majority of them chose to return
back voluntarily.
Government still needs to fix
fraud in NZ Immigration system
D
espite, the recent compassionate decision
by Associate Immigration Minister, it
needs to be reminded that the government
needs to fix the agent-generated fraud in our
immigration system.
What is also not clear yet, if the government
had so far initiated any action after the
Ombudsman’s earlier finding where it noted
that INZ had failed to introduce any checks and
mechanism to regulate or to monitor the actions
of these agents.

“thought transformation,”
as manifested in its 93rd
Annual General Meeting
held in Wellington
(AGM) on Saturday,
April 13.
The one-day long conference had
brought together over 120 delegates
from various chapters of the parent
body from all over the country to
delve upon how they want to steer
their organizations in the near future.
Themed as “Vichar Parivartan” –
the NZICA conference engaged with
several thought-provoking topics
such as “building organizational
capacity,” “IT management for non-
profit organisations, “role of media in
community,” “youth engagement,”
“retaining mother-tongue and
culture,” which were followed by
an enthralling question and answer
session.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender,
Manisha Morar, one of the executive
committee members closely involved
in the organisation of the two-day

her office is committed to supporting
ethnic communities.

the conference were to create a floor
for open dialogue and new ideas to
engage more with the Kiwi-Indian
community of different sub-Indian
communities living in New Zealand.

There are few filmmakers in
India who can make a movie
on a sensitive topic and put in a
good dose of humour. Questao
de Confusao is one of those
films which does extremely
well on all fronts, whether it is
the story, content, cinematography, acting and
conveying a social message.
The movie is about two neighbours, Gaonkars
and Costas, who are living in a fictional Goan
village called Mogali and who are always at
loggerheads due to ancestral enmity.
Vasudev Gaonkar (Anil Raikar) is the eldest
member of Gaonkar family and a dominating
father who is ever ready to quarrel and argue
with Costas. His son, Vasudev (Rajdeep Naik),
is a kind and caring person but is dominated by
his father Vasudev. Revati (Reshma Naik) is
Vasudev’s wife and also deals with difficulties.
Meanwhile, the Costa family is headed by
Catherine (Gauri Kamat) who too is always
ready to fight with the Gaonkars. Juzefar (Anil
Pednekar) is Catherine’s son and will always
do anything his mother asks him to. Juzefar’s
wife Mary (Antoinette D’Souza) is someone
who wants to stay away from any quarrel, but
she too has to bow down to her mother in-law’s
dictatorship.
Even though the two families like to get
into a fight over petty issues, their grandsons,
Krishna Gaonkar and Kris Costa happen to be
best friends in school.

Electoral ward changes will affect
some voters in October local elections

Auckland Council’s proposed
changes to electoral ward boundaries
affecting which ward some voters will
belong to for voting in the October local
government elections.
The changes are the result of a
representation review required by
legislation to ensure community
interests are fairly represented on the
council.
This means that councillors in each
ward should each represent similarly
sized populations without too much
variation across the whole of Auckland.
Public consultation on changes
proposed by the council attracted more
than 1200 submissions. The council’s
final proposals received five appeals
and objections, and these were heard by
the Local Government Commission in
March.

he changes will affect which
ward some voters belong to in the
isthmus area.
The communities of Newmarket,
Parnell and part of Grafton will move
to the Orakei Ward, while communities
around Ellerslie and the eastern end
of St Johns will become part of the

governance working party, Mr Richard
Northey, acknowledged while there
may be some confusion now council
wards and local board boundaries will
not be aligned in some areas, residents
and businesses can be reassured that
their local board boundaries will not be
changed.
“The huge increase in apartment
dwellings in the central city made it
necessary to reduce the area covered by
the Waitemata and Gulf Ward hence that
major change,” he said.
“The council will ensure that
Aucklanders will be fully informed
about how they may be affected before
the October local elections.”
Maps showing the new boundaries
will be available on the council’s
website with the council’s other election
information.
Mr Northey welcomed the certainty
brought about by the Local Government
Commission upholding the council’s
full proposal, which was recommended
by the working party.
“The changes only drew a small
number of appeals to the Commission,
so they appear generally acceptable to
the public,” he said.

ith school holidays under way, and wintry conditions
starting to make themselves felt, Police are urging people
to adequately prepare before heading out into the great
outdoors.
Regardless of whether you’re heading out for a few hours or a few
days, or how experienced you may be, being prepared and properly
equipped is vital.
Follow these five simple rules to help make sure your trip is a safe
and enjoyable one:
• Plan your trip: This includes the route you will take and the
amount of time you can reasonably expect it to take.
• Tell someone your plans: Make sure someone knows your plans,
including the day you expect to return – that way they can raise the
alarm if you don’t return as planned.
• Be aware of the weather: New Zealand’s weather can be highly
unpredictable and weather conditions can change rapidly – make
sure to check the forecast and be prepared for all eventualities.
• Know your limits: Challenge yourself within your physical limits
and experience.
• Take sufficient supplies: Make sure you have enough food,
clothing, equipment and emergency rations for the worst-case
scenario.
It’s also important to ensure that you have an appropriate means
of communication, should you need it. Mobile phones don’t always
work in some remote spots, so Police recommend always taking a
Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).

M
ore than 500 men, women and
children clad in traditional
festive dresses came to the
Sathya Sai Baba Community hall in
Onehunga on Saturday, April 13 to
celebrate the Vishu festival.
Vishukani is one of the biggest
festivals for the Malayali Hindu
community like its neighbour Tamilians,
Kannadigas or Teluguites. It marks the
first day of harvest, which is observed
with a lot of pomp and joy within
the community. This festival is also
equivalent to Punjab’s Baisakh, Assam’s
Bihu and Bengal’s Poila Boisakh.
Back in Kerala, special events are
organised by the community members at
small towns, villages and even at homes
and community halls where the entire
community gathers as one big family
welcoming the festival of harvest or
solar New Year.
As a tradition, it is essential to start the
day with family, and seeing auspicious
joyful things, as there is a belief that
if one sees good things first on Vishu
morning- he or she would experience the
same and have a happier year ahead.
People prepare a tray of fruits such
as rice, lemon, coconut, jackfruit, metal
mirror, golden yellow flowers, a portrait
of Vishnu etc.
Men wear Kasavu Munda, an off-
white piece of clothing with golden or
red borders- and women wear Kerala
Kasavu sarees or silk sarees with similar
broad red or golden borders on this
auspicious occasion.
As a part of the celebration, the idol of
Vishnu, or his avatar- Krishna is kept to
pray. The idol is surrounded with floral
decorations, incense sticks, fruits
and lamp and people sing hymns in his
praise.
The event on Saturday started with
a classical Carnatic music Bhajan
(hymn) rendered by a senior member of
the community. This was followed by
Bharatnatyam dances by different dance
groups through the day, cinematic dances
displaying the joy of this auspicious day
that it brings to the families and the
community.
“A vital part of the event is to introduce
Vishu to our younger generation who are
born here and not much familiar with
our customs and festivals. We want our
children to participate in such events,
and we see a very enthusiastic response
from them,” Kiran Kumar, a member
of the organising team of Auckland
Malayali Hindu Samajam told The
Indian Weekender.
As a part of the celebrations,
community members also give alms
to poor and to charity, and the children
enjoy setting off fireworks.

upcoming Easter holidays this week.
Evcery year, the road toll goes up following

ahead before leaving home,’’ Mr Johansson says.
The Transport Agency predicts traffic will be especially
heavy on Thursday 18 April and Good Friday 19 April, and
then on the return journey on Sunday 28 April.
“Last year, we had 387 motor vehicle accident claims
over the Easter period, a substantial increase from the
previous year of 312,’’ says ACC’s Chief Customer Officer,
Emma Powell, ‘’and this year the risk will be higher with
busier roads.
“It takes everyone on the road to make it safe and look
out for those most vulnerable – such as motorcyclists and
young drivers (aged 16-24).
Young drivers were injured in almost a third of motor
vehicle accidents last Easter, so this group needs to be extra
vigilant.
Our advice is to be aware of the increased number of
vehicles around you as this can create challenging driving
conditions and pay extra attention in rural areas, where
roads can be more demanding.
“Planning your journey, driving within your own
capabilities and adjusting for the driving conditions are key
to your own and other road users safety,’’ says Ms Powell.
“During holiday periods when the roads are busier
than usual, the risk of drivers making mistakes that
result in injuries or deaths increases,” says Inspector
Peter McKennie, Manager Operations National Road
Policing Centre.
“That’s why everyone needs to pay full attention to the
road safety basics over the holiday period.
“Over the holiday period from 4pm Thursday 18 April to
6am Tuesday 23 April – if you’re detected by a safe speed
camera exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 4
km/h, you will be ticketed.
“Police will be out on the roads doing our bit to keep
people safe, but it’s critical that everyone takes responsibility
for the safety of themselves and other road users.”

Bainimarama says this new mobile
application is designed to make
life easier and more convenient for
countless Fijian families.
He says this new Birth Registration
mobile app will allow for the
electronic registration of the birth of
a child making a once slow process
easier for new parents who already
have enough to worry about when
welcoming a new member to their
families.
Bainimarama says through this
new app, parents can now begin
as soon as they decide on the
newborn child’s name, be it from the
hospital bed or the comfort of their
own home.
He says people simply need to
download the Birth Registration App,
follow the simple instructions on
screen, and submit their registration
electronically.
Fiji, Australia seal Blackrock project
Fiji was indeed grateful to the Government of Australia for fully committing to
undertake this project as a whole through financial assistance and technical expertise

signed a memorandum of
understanding (MOU) that
will result in the redevelopment
of the Blackrock military camp
in Nadi, which prepares members
of the disciplined services for
peacekeeping duties overseas.
The MOU was signed by the
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry
of Defence and National Security,
Manasa Lesuma, and the Assistant
Secretary Indo-Pacific Enhanced
Engagement Branch, International
Policy Division, Australian
Department of Defence, Sue Bodell.
Mr Lesuma said Fiji was grateful
to the Government of Australia for
fully committing to this project.
“First and foremost, I acknowledge
and thank the Government of
Australia for its commitment to
assist Fiji in the redevelopment of
the Blackrock Peacekeeping and

IPL versus Box Office
F
ilms, when released, are sensitive to
any and everything that may affect its
potential. The box office is sensitive to
just about everything that happens outside of a
film auditorium. Say, a strike, an unrest, cricket,
festivals and so on. Not to forget the television,
video, CD, DVD and, now, OTT, the small
screen content streaming.
This takes me back to my initiation into the
film industry through a distribution company.
Film offices worked on a bare minimum
basis in those days. There was a manager, his
assistant, a typist-cum-telephone operator and
a peon. There was no corporate culture where
more people are employed than the company
can ever hope to recover unless every film is
a hit.
In those days, a film distribution company
which released a film, got a DCR (Daily
Collection Report). No SMS, WhatsApp
message or emails. Oftentimes, when the post
delivered the DCR to you, a film could very
well have been discontinued from a cinema.
These DCRs came from each town and city
where your film released. It mentioned the
collections of all the films released or running
in the said town.
The figures of all the films told you where
your film stood vis a vis other films. But, besides
these details, the DCR also reported about the
other distractions which, in film parlance, were
called oppositions.
These other oppositions included local
language films, a circus in town and festivals.
There was also a mention of the weekly market
in small towns where people from surrounding
villages gathered to sell their ware. When it
came to festivals, some were good for the box
office collections while some others took away
from them. The festivals like Ramlila, Holi,

Navratras etc spoiled the box office prospects
in the North, Ganesh festival, Navratri and such
affected Western India, especially Mumbai.
Even in those days, Bombay Circuit, which
included Mumbai, Gujarat, a part of Karnataka
and also Goa, was the most lucrative followed
by Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. While the
makers avoided releasing a film during such
periods, Ramlila, a circus in town or any such
show was considered major opposition to films.
Now, the era of DCRs is over. Things
are getting centralised. Thanks to GST,
entertainment tax rates have stabilised as a
reasonable percentage of the admission rates,
nationally. Earlier, it was on the whim of the
states as cinema business was on the concurrent
list and, hence, a state subject.
While communication has become easier,
the meaning of opposition to a theatrical film
has changed. The major challenges started with
the advent of the electronic media. First, it was
analogue TV, as in Doordarshan which ate
into film collections with its film programmes
including film telecasts every Sunday evening
(prime time for cinema), followed by video
format, VCD, pen drive, hard disc storage and
so on. Just about every major star like Amitabh
Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and
Shah Rukh Khan has accepted television
as another medium of entertainment. The
character artistes find work in both mediums.
Now, they also find work in OTT platform and
it won’t be long before big stars join in too.
And, that is cricket. India plays cricket on a
regular basis and one can say cricketers work
more than a normal office going person does;
say about 150 days a year not to count county
cricket and nets.

T20 followed. This three hour format, usually
played in the evening, that is 4 pm onwards,
started telling on box office collections as they
affected at least two shows on the day the match
was played. Which was a day or two.
So far so good as the film industry coped
with cricket in its three formats like it did with a
circus in town, festivals, ODIs and, even, T20s.
But, then came the biggest circus of them all.
The Indian Premiere League (IPL). This was
not a one-or-two-day affair. It hogs up a whole
season. Just about the entire summer! Earlier,
the summer vacations brought in footfalls at the
cinema halls.
Of course, now things have changed. One
does not go to a cinema just because it is a
vacation, thanks to admission rates. Now, a film
has to be worth that much money and effort.
But, the IPL is a two-month-long jamboree.
Gives a great alternative to sending kids out
or even for getting seniors in to cinema halls.
Cricket, especially IPL, is a kind of inspiration
for kids. Cricket spells money and, hence, every
kid and youth’s aspiration. This is the biggest
opposition the film industry and box office
has faced in the last 12 years. What the big
filmmakers do is wisely avoid releasing a film
during this period. This week, for instance, as
many as six small films (Albert Pinto Ko Gussa
Kyon Aata Hai?, Blackboard Vs Whiteboard,
Ek Hakikat Ganga, Gun Pe Done, Paharganj
and The Tashkent Files) have found screening
slots at multiplexes which, otherwise, would
not have been possible.
The first few years of the IPL were really
hurting the film business. Both the filmmakers
and the exhibitors. Some multiplexes even
planned to screen these matches at their
cinemas. It did not work because this form

of cricket is not watched in a dark hall where
people twiddle their thumbs during breaks
after every over is bowled. It is to be watched
at home or a club or a pub and the excitement
shared with friends. Things are a bit better now
because, earlier a cricket lover wanted to watch
every match. But, gradually IPL watching was
filtered down to watching only the matches of
favourite teams.
Sajid Nadidwala, who released his film
Housefull during IPL, said his film’s collections
showed a huge drop in Pune because the Pune
team was playing that day. I told him that he
need not worry as the drop would be made up
in the days to follow since his film was already
accepted by moviegoers. Vasu Bhagnani was
the first one to ignore the opposition of IPL and
released one of his films bang in the middle
of the IPL season. The film proved to be a hit.
And, now releasing a film during the IPL does
not bother the filmmakers.
This year for instance, Kesari released on
March 21 though the IPL was scheduled to
start from March 23. Luka Chuppi and Badla,
the spill over films, continued to hold well
even during IPL. Next week (April 17) will17 see
the release of Kalank followed by Avengers:
Endgame on March 26.

Walter, had a reasonable opening weekend of
about Rs 21 crore but the film could not sustain
during rest of the week which closed with
figures of Rs 29 crore.
*The other release, Shazam, is poor having

week taking its three week tally to Rs 146 crore.

Voting begins in 95 seats in phase 2 of LS polls
V
oting began on Thursday across 95 Lok Sabha constituencies spread
over 12 states and Union Territories as the second phase of the mega
seven-phase electoral exercise kicked off.
Voting for electing MLAs in 35 of Odisha's 147 assembly seats also
started along with polling for five of the state's 21 Lok Sabha constituencies.
In these constituencies, electors will cast two votes each.
In West Bengal, a total of 49,32,346 voters -- 25,22,887 men, 24,09,372
women and 87 registered in the 'other' category -- are eligible to exercise
their franchise as polling began at 7 a.m. for three constituencies in the state.
In Tamil Nadu, voting is happening in 38 out of total 39 seats as the
Election Commission on Tuesday rescinded the poll for Vellore Lok Sabha
constituency after the Income Tax (IT) department seized unaccounted cash
from the cement warehouse allegedly belonging to a DMK functionary's
relative.
Voting also started in 14 out of 28 seats in Karnataka, 10 out of 48 in
Maharashtra, eight out of 80 in Uttar Pradesh, five out of 40 in Bihar, and
three each in Chhattisgarh (out of 11) and West Bengal (out of 42).
Of Assam's 14 constituencies, voting started in five of them while it also
began in two out of six -- Srinagar and Udhampur -- in Jammu and Kashmir,
and one constituency each in Manipur and Puducherry. Polling to Tripura
East, which was slated for Thursday, has been deferred to the third phase on
April 23 on security concerns. Polling also started in the lone Puducherry
Lok Sabha seat and in the Thattanchavady assembly constituency for which
by-election is being held.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections started on April 11 and would
conclude on May 19. Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
Jhunjhunwala doubts BJP getting majority

hanging his earlier stance, billionaire investor and trader Rakesh
Jhunjhunwala has said that the ruling BJP may not get a clear majority
in the Lok Sabha elections. He, however, said the party would be a major
partner in the next government at the Centre.
Jhunjhunwala's current position is different from his view in February
when he had predicted that Narendra Modi-led BJP would come back to
power with a comfortable majority.
The first phase of elections ended on April 11. The Lok Sabha Election
2019 will be conducted in seven phases and counting will be held on May
23. Talking about market trends, the ace investor said the poor had not
benefited from the bull-run in the markets in the past four decades.
Jhunjhunwala advised the market participants to exercise caution and wait
till the end of the elections to be aggressive and invest.

son of Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar. This time, he faces the
DMK's T. Sumathi alias Thamizhachi Thangapandian and Kamal Haasan's
MNM candidate R. Rangarajan, who is a former IAS officer, and 37 others.
Comprising six assembly seats - Virugambakkam, Saidapet, T. Nagar,
Mylapore, Velachery and Sholinganallur, Chennai South has a total
electorate of 19.73 lakh, where women votes at 9.93 lakh are ahead of male
voters (9.79 lakh). There are also 389 third gender voters.

n estimated 2.43 crore electorates will test Prime Minister Narendra
Modi's popularity as 14 out of 28 constituencies in Karnataka go to
the polls in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on Thursday
amid tight security.
"Elaborate arrangements have been made across the state's central and
southern regions for free and fair polling in 30,164 booths spread over 14
parliamentary seats from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. amid tight security," state Chief
Electoral Officer (CEO) Sanjiv Kumar said. The 14 constituencies are:
Udupi-Chikmagalur, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga (SC), Tumkur,
Mandya, Mysore, Chamarajnagar (SC), Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North,
Bangalore Central, Bangalore South, Chikkaballapur and Kolar (SC).
Polling in the remaining 14 seats will be held in the west coast and
northern regions of the state in the third phase on April 23.

Dame”. The cathedral had survived almost 900
years of tumultuous French history but was
decimated amid renovation works at the start of

The cathedral’s iconic twin bell towers,
however, remained intact.
In an interview with AP, Junior Interior
Minister Laurent Nunez said, “The task is –
now the risk of fire has been put aside – about
the building, how the structure will resist.”
One of the city’s five senior vicars, Philippe
Marsset, told AP: “If God intervened (in the
blaze) it was in the courage of the firefighters.”
“Notre Dame was destroyed but the soul of
France was not,” Michel Aupetit, archbishop of

injuries while dousing the blaze which at one
point threatened to bring down one of the two
monumental towers on the western facade of
the cathedral that is visited by more than 12
million tourists each year.
As a saving grace, Paris’ fire brigade chief
Jean-Claude Gallet had declared that “we can
consider that the main structure of Notre-Dame
has been saved and preserved,” as well as the
two bell towers. However, Culture Minister
Riester sent out a warning that the structure
remained unstable.
