Project IRAL: A Reading Intervention for Pupils Under Frustration Level

of Pantihan II Elementary School

Introduction:
Reading is one of the macro skills to be learned by pupils. To become
a reader, one must also understand what he/she reads. A reader must also
know how to communicate and share information and ideas. Thus this
become one of the problems our school is facing nowadays. To (include the

Objectives of the Study:


This study aims to find out the impact of the Project IRAL (Improving the
Reading Ability of Learners) of Grade 4 to Grade 6 pupils of Pantihan II
Elementary School for the school year 2018-2019 under frustration level to
independent level.(include the specific objectives, the one stated is the
primary objective only)

Methods:
To identify the reading level of the pupils, we use PHIL-IRI as the tool
for measuring the reading ability of the pupils. First, they undergo Group
Screening Test (Silent reading test) pupil read four sets of short story and
then answer 20 item test. If the pupils score falls on 14 below, they continue
reading which is an Oral Test. The level of stories they read will be depend
on their scores. On the Oral Test, pupils will read the text orally, teacher will
record the miscue and the time they finished. After computing, we knew their
level as to independent, instructional and frustration. Pupils with low reading
level were give remedial reading and peer reading.(include the methods of
data gathering and the statistical method to be employed in analysing the
data, example: sampling technique and t-test, and also the population should
be specific: example 45 out 100 grade 4 pupils)
Result:
Based from the results of Pre Test and Post Test, we found out that
many pupils from grade 4 to grade 6 fall on frustration level. On the pre-test,
41 out of 95 pupils fall on frustration level, 32 on instructional level and 27 on
independent level. Then on the post test, there were still number of pupils
fall on this frustration level. 19 pupils remained frustration, 37 instructional
and 36 independent.

Discussion
The results show that we need to further intensify the reading program
of our school. That many pupils still on frustration and instructional level.
Since it become one of the targets in the Division of Cavite that no one will
be graduated from grade six that who doesn’t know how to read and
comprehend as well. (the conclusion must be based on the objectives
stated above and with supporting results of the statistical test to reinforced
the claim.
