Proceedings in the Civil Court are governed by rules of
procedure which are intricate and labyrinthine in nature. For
litigation counsel, whose call to duty begins long before the
actual trial, grasping and deciphering these rules, as
fundamental as it may seem, is a daunting task that
oftentimes requires a herculean effort on their part. It bears
no reminder that a misstep in applying these rules can be
disastrous. It can mean that their labour and appearances
before the Registrars or Judges as the case may be will be
short-lived and unfruitful, or just an exercise in futility.
CLJ’s “Workshop on Civil Procedure: Developing Advocacy
and Scholarship in Procedural Applications” aspires to engage
the solicitors concerned on what’s new and current in the
law on Civil Procedure. The topics chosen for dissection, of
necessity, relate manifestly to substantive issues that routinely
come before the court, and are hence matters of distinct
significance to counsel and litigants. More, these topics will
be addressed by distinguished speakers of great repute and
learning, and delegates, therefore, can expect to be
refreshed and armed with such litigation knowledge and skills.
Prospective delegates are kindly advised to register early, as seats
are limited and treated on a “first register first admitted” basis.

Dato' Varghese A/L George Varughese graduated with a
