ASSIGNMENT 4

1. A concrete dam 30m height including freeboard has a top width of 5.4m. the upstream face
of the dam is vertical and the downstream face is sloping with 2H: 3V from the top of the
dam. The free board is 3.5m. If the density of concrete is 2.4t/m3, determine the factor of
safety against overturning and sliding consider tail water of 6m. Assume safe shear stress
equals to 1.40t/m2 , coefficient of friction as 0.7.
2. The following data refer to a non- overflow section of a gravity dam. RL of top of dam
+315m, RL of bottom of dam +260m. FRL +312m. Top width of dam12m. Upstream face
is vertical and downstream face is vertical till a RL of +304m. Thereafter the downstream
face has slope of 0.7H: 1V up to base. Drain holes are located at 8m from u/s face
considering only the weight of dam, water pressure, and uplift pressure, check stability of
dam. There is no tail water. Coefficient of friction 0.8, safe shear stress 1.40t/m2. Unit
weight of dam material is 2.4t/m3.
3. Investigate the stability of the following gravity dam under reservoir full condition. Total
depth of water is 80m, free board 2m, top width 6m, upstream face vertical, downstream
face vertical for a height of 8m from top and sloping down at 2H:3V to bottom. Location
of drainage gallery is at 8m from upstream face. Coefficient of friction 0.74. safe shear
stress is 14 kg/cm2, specific weight of dam material 2.4t/m2. there is no tail water. Consider
only major forces.
4. For the below given section of dam, determine a) Factor of safety against sliding b) Factor
of safety against overturning c) maximum and minimum stresses at heel and toe d)
maximum inclined stress at toe.
