Comments about the task:

1. A two question essay.

1. Growth of industrial areas in developing countries

2. Changing lifestyles

Solutions

1. Regulate business

2. Introduce laws to encourage more environmentally friendly practices

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or
experience.

SAMPLE WRITING TASK 1

The provided table gives data on the sales of a small restaurant for the second week of October month.
As is observed from the given presentation, the sales volume of dinner is higher than the lunch sales
volume throughout the whole week except Sunday and people spend more money for lunch and dinner
to the restaurant on Friday.

As is presented in the comparison table, the sale amount of the restaurant in lunch time is around $
2300 to $ 2600 from Monday to Friday. Their sales volume of dinner for the same days of the week is
between $3400 and $4400. But on Saturday and Sunday, a different trend is observed when the sales
volume drops compared to other days of the week and this is possibly because of the days off. On
Sunday the sales volume of lunch decreases to $ 1,550 and dinner to $ 2,450 which are the least
amounts they sale in the week. Interestingly the dinner sales volume on Sunday night drops to only $
2045 which is almost 2 times less than the amount they sell on Friday night.

In summary, the restaurant sales more for dinner than the lunch and people tend to eat less in
restaurants on Saturday and Sunday.
SAMPLE WRITING TASK 2

More than any time in history, human beings are producing more waste products and this is increasing at
a noticeable alarming rate. This essay discusses why this is happening and explores the measures
governments need to take to bring this under control.

There are several reasons that can be attributed to the increase of rubbish in modern life. The primary
reason is the growth of industrial areas in developing countries. Many countries in Asia and Africa are
building more and more factories every day to meet the demands of their ever increasing population
and for export purposes. The second reason is the change of people's lifestyles, especially those who
live in urban cities. For instance, more and more people are eating outside in restaurants and eating
takeaway foods, which translates into the usage of more plastic products to be used as food containers
which will inevitably increase the amount of plastic.

There are several measures governments can take to remedy this challenging issue. The most effective
measure is for governments to reduce the amount of industrial waste by passing laws to curtail harmful
activities such as waste disposal and encourage environmentally friendly activities such as using green
energy (renewable sources of energy). Secondly, governments can introduce regulations which limit the
usage of polluting products such as plastics. For example, several countries in Europe are banning the
use of plastic bags in supermarkets. This has helped reduce the amount of plastic people use.

In conclusion, more garbage is being created due to harmful business practices and changing lifestyles.
However, if governments regulate business and introduce laws to encourage more environmentally
friendly practices, this can be reduced to a manageable level. [273 words]

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The table below shows social and economic indicators for four countries in 1994, according to United
Nations statistics.

Describe the information shown below in your own words. What implications do the indicators have for
the countries?

You should write at least 150 words.

WRITING TASK 2

Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Comments about the task:

1. An opinion essay

2. The topic is not about FORCING equal numbers, just ACCEPTING.

3. it’s easier to agree with accepting and I think I would choose to totally agree. Note that it is easy to
sound sexist when disagreeing with accepting equal numbers of students.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or
experience.

SAMPLE WRITING TASK 1

The table compares four social and economic aspects for Canada, Japan, Peru and Zaire in the year 1994.
A glance at the table reveals that Canada and Japan far outweighed Peru and Zaire in terms of their
citizens social and economic conditions.

As the data suggests, yearly average earning for a Canadian was more than 11 thousand US dollar in
1994. The highest annual earning was in Japan where a citizen made over 15 thousand. Annual income
for a citizen in Peru and Zaire was less than 200 USD and this figure was almost 100 times fewer than
that of the former two countries. Life expectancy was highest in Japan, 78 years, which was marginally
higher than that of Canadians but substantially higher than that of Peru and Zaire, where life expectancy
was 51 and 47 years respectively. Moreover, 99% Canadians and Japanese adults were literate while it
was only 68% in Peru. On contrary to that, two-thirds adults in Zaire were illiterate. Finally, daily calorie
supply per person in Canada was the highest, more than 3.3 kilocalories while it was slightly below than
3 kilocalories in Japan. However, Peru and Zaire could only ensure less than 2 kilocalories per person in a
day.

SAMPLE WRITING TASK 2

ACCEPTING

-gender equality/human rights

- Chances of gender discrimination in society will greatly reduce if men and women study together more.

-Allow people to follow their passion -let people choose their career paths

NOT ACCEPTING
-Each gender is suited to different kinds of subjects/careers

-men should have priority because they are the main breadwinner (I would NOT write this though as it is
extremely sexist and you may anger the examiner).

More women than men should be accepted as part of affirmative action programs ‫برنامج العمل اليإجابي‬to
address the disadvantages women face in society

It has been proposed that tertiary institutions should accept the same proportion of students to each
course. I totally agree with this notion as it is in accordance with the principles of gender equality and it
will also serve to create a more harmonious society and reduce gender discrimination.

I believe that universities must accept equal numbers of students from each gender for a particular
course that they wish to apply to. The reason for this is because favouring one sex over the other is a
form of discrimination, which should not be accepted in any civilised society. This is because it
influences the ability for people to pursue careers and have equal rights in society. For example, in
Cambodia, where women are not allowed to study at university, they are severely disadvantaged in the
workforce and economy as well. For example (the devastating effect on the economy, which usually hit a
fall in comparison with other countries, that have the equality between the two genders in their
universities.

Another benefit off accepting a similar number of students from each gender is that it will lead to a
society with less gender discrimination. The basic logic here is that if tertiary students have a chance to
study with members of the opposite sex they will be more likely to be able to interact and communicate
with the opposite gender outside of school. For instance, my cousin studied engineering in an almost
exclusively male class and as a result, he is very shy of the opposite sex and gets nervous every time he
has to talk to a girl.

In conclusion, I absolutely believe that tertiary institutions should accept equal numbers of male and
female students in order to avoid sexual discrimination and assure a harmonious society. Therefore, a
policy of equal acceptance should be instituted ‫ يجب أن يتم تأسيسها‬in every country of the world, and any
kind of gender-based quotas should be abolished. [297 words]
Language:

Gender = sexuality as a male/female

Equality = people being equal regardless of sex, race, and religion harmonious society = a peaceful
society

Gender discrimination = policies that favour one gender or the other equal rights = having equal
chances to things like education and employment tertiary institutions = universities and technical
institutes abolished: eliminated, eradicated

WRITING PRACTICE TEST 1

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The climograph below shows average monthly temperatures and rainfall in the city of Kolkata.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where
relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

WRITING TASK 2

Write about the following topic.

It is now possible for scientists and tourists to travel to remote natural environment, such as the South
Pole.

What are advantages and disadvantages of this development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or
experience.
SAMPLE WRITING TASK 1

The chart compares average figures for temperature and precipitation over the course of a calendar year
in Kolkata.

It is noticeable that monthly figures for precipitation in Kolkata vary considerably, whereas monthly
temperatures remain relatively stable. Rainfall is highest from July to August, while temperatures are
highest in April and May.

Between the months of January and May, average temperatures in Kolkata rise from their lowest point at
around 20°C to a peak of just over 30°C. Average rainfall in the city also rises over the same period, from
approximately 20mm of rain in January to 100mm in May.

While temperatures stay roughly the same for the next four months, the amount of rainfall more than
doubles between May and June. Figures for precipitation remain above 250mm from June to September,
peaking at around 330mm in July. The final three months of the year see a dramatic fall in precipitation,
to a low of about 10mm in December, and a steady drop in temperatures back to the January average.

SAMPLE WRITING TASK 2

Travelling to such places as the poles seemed to be unthinkable ‫ غير وارد‬a few centuries ago. Now both
scientists and tourists can do it, but is it a positive achievement? - I doubt it, and I am going to explain
why. (Now both scientists and tourists can do it , but I have a doubt that it is a positive achievement, and
In this essay I will explain why before a reasoned conclusion is drawn.

When Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole and set up a Norwegian flag there, the whole world
admired his courage and determination ‫الشجاعة والتصميم‬. Captain Scott and his team were less successful
and unfortunately none of his companions managed to come back. The captain’s diaries and letters to
his unborn son cannot be read without tears and compassion. These are two remarkable examples of
inner strength and unbroken spirit which cannot be underestimated.
There is no doubt that a lot of things have become more affordable for the past decades. Nevertheless
travelling to remote natural environments need to be prepared thoroughly. The ways of transport like
snowmobiles cannot be compared with dog sledges or skates. Tourists do not need to have food depots,
they can transport all the food, clothes and necessary equipment with them. I am convinced that seeing
all the untouched beauty of the nature will leave everyone speechless as this beauty can hardly be
expressed by words.

We must acknowledge that people do more harm to the nature wherever they appear. We cannot deny
that Everest has become a greatest dump “thanks to” all the tourists who climb it. They all are looking
for excitement and new experience, but what is left behind them? I am convinced that such places as the
South and North poles should become ecological reserves and their activity has to be supervised by the
government and environmental organizations. There are other numerous ways of searching the
information except visiting the places. Ecotourism should be restricted as well because thousands of
species of animals have been disappeared for ever.

Overall, tourism to distant places does great harm to the environment. The governments should take
measures to protect the habitat of rare animals and plants from people.
The pie charts show the proportion of money spent on various household
expenses in Malaysia and Japan in 2010.

We can see that in Malaysia the greatest proportion of expenditure (34%) was on
housing, while in Japan housing accounted for just 21% of the total. In contrast, in
Japan the greatest single expense was other goods and services at 29%, compared
with 26% in Malaysia. Food came in second place in Japan, at 24%, while in
Malaysia the actual proportion was higher (27%). In Japan another major expense
was transport, at 20%, but this was much lower In Malaysia (10%). In both
countries the smallest percentage of expenditure was on health care.

Overall, the data indicates that in both cases food, housing and other goods and
services were the main expenses, but that in Japan, transport and other goods
and services took up a higher proportion of total expenditure than in Malaysia.
This bar chart illustrates the performance of Someland's primary exports in
2005 and 2015. It also indicates future projections for 2025. According to the
data, it seems likely that international tourism will become the dominant
industry, although dairy exports will remain strong.

In 2005, we can see that tourism was the greatest exports earner of the
three industries, with revenue standing at just over $6 billion. This figure has
increased slightly, so that now, in 2015, it has reached almost $7 billion. It is
estimated that international tourism will continue to grow, so that by 2025,
it will be earning around $8 billion for the country. In 2000, dairy exports
were worth around $5 billion, but since then there has been a dramatic
increase, and sales for this year are approximately $8 billion. Experts are
predicting that exports in this area may fall slightly, so a figure of $7.5 billion
is expected for 2025. Meat products are the third key industry in Someland,
but sales have dropped since 2000 and now stand at $3.5 billion. It is
expected that sales will continue to decrease in the future.
