Rationale for Standard 11.7: Analyst
Artifact name: Document Camera
Standard:
Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving
their learning goals.
What the Standard means to me:
Educators can use technology in a meaningful way to develop assessment, goals, and
instruction in a way that supports each learner.
Indicator:
11.7 (b) Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative and summative
assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback to students and inform
instruction.
Description of the artifact:
This artifact is a picture of student work being projected onto the big screen using a document
camera. The document camera is something that I used a lot during my time of student
teaching. In this particular photo, I am projecting the student's math work on the board for
them to talk the class through the process they took when solving this problem. After the
student is done explaining I ask clarifying questions, and I also ask the rest of the class if they
agree. Lastly, I am able to give the students immediate feedback on what they said and the
process they took. I show student work to clear up misconceptions, show new ways to solve
problems and let the students take the role as a teacher every now and then.
Rationale:
By using the document camera to project student work I am giving a formative assessment. In
this assessment, I am listening to the process the student went through to solve the problem,
and I am looking at the work that they did. I am doing a very effective and quick assessment of
what this particular student knows. I then ask the other students if they agree or not and
therefore am doing another quick assessment on what the other students know. Lastly, I am
providing immediate verbal feedback to all of the students. Even though I am targetting the
student whose work is on the board I am also covering what the other students may be
thinking. Using the document camera is a very effective way to do quick assessments with the
students to start or end a lesson, and it allows for me to give immediate feedback that will help
all students with further instruction.
