Types of Motivation:
★ Intrinsic Motivation: when people engage in an activity for their own personal enjoyment, satisfaction, and stimulation
(Kovar, Combs, Campbell, Napper-Owen, & Worrell, 2012, p. 266 ).
★ Extrinsic Motivation: when people engage in an activity because they are forced and/or for a reward (Kovar et al., 2012, p.
266-267).
○ This type of motivation has shown that people are not motivated to perform the activity when the reward is not
offered, thus making them not perform the activity at all (Kovar et al., 2012, p. 267).
Challenges Regarding Motivation to be Physically Active:
★ Health issues ★ Boredom; not interested
★ Handicap ★ Too difficult
★ Parents/ Caregivers ★ Not enough space
★ Technology ★ Embarrassment; less confident about themselves
★ Anxiety/Shyness (Kovar et al., 2012, p. 263).

A Concept to Motivate Students:

According to Kovar et al. (2012, p. 267-270), a concept to motivate students is to build students’ intrinsic motivation. This can be
done by incorporating the following into the learning environment:
★ Allow students to feel like they are competent (successes)
★ Give students autonomy (choices)
○ This makes students want to participate because they can choose the assignment they are most interested in
★ Students need to feel like they belong and are connected to the learning environment (relatedness)
○ Make students realize their positive feelings relating to movement
○ Give students praises for their accomplishments
○ Link ability and effort
Lillian, Yeny, Marian, Cierra
■ This gives children the sense they are in control of their success for activities
○ Provide experiences for students that give them enjoyment and exhilaration
A Strategy to Implement the Concept to Motivate Students:
★ The incorporation of music and objects (i.e. balloons) makes students want to participate in the activities.
○ Video demonstration of “Balloon Music” Game: Balloon Music Game
○ Video of “Dead Bugs” Game: Dead Bugs Video
As demonstrated in the videos, there are creative strategies that can be introduced in the classroom to promote physical activity:
★ One of the strategies to promote physical activity in the classroom would be to keep balloons from touching the floor while
music is playing and implement it as a game.
★ Another activity is playing the “Dead Bug” game, where the students march around the room to music and pretend to be
dead bugs, lying on their backs with their feet and hands in the air, each time the music stops.
★ Finally, students are given a choice of either activity (autonomy). The students will then vote on which one they want to do
in the classroom.
