A semi-detailed Lesson Plan for Music 9
Learning Competencies:

 Narrates the plot, musical and theatrical elements of an opera after video and movie
showing (MU9OP-IVa-g1)
 Listens perceptively to selected art songs and excerpts of opera(MU9OP-IVa-g2)
 Sings themes or melodic fragments of given selected songs (MU9OP-IVb-h3)
 Explores other arts and media that portray Romantic period elements (MU9OP-IVb-h4)
 Creates / improvises appropriate sounds, music, gestures, movements, and costumes

I Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

 define what is an Opera


 Differentiate Opera from Musicals
 enumerate the different parts and elements of an Opera
 identify the two of the famous romantic period playwrights
 Sing an opera piece in unison.
 Perform a scene of an opera with complete costume, acting and singing

III Procedures

Lesson Proper:

A. Priming: The teacher will post picture of Guiseppe Verdi, Narrate the life and the his compoitions.
(10min), The teacher will ask the students the following questions: Have you experienced to sing
the lines in a script? What did you feel about your experience? (10 min)
1. Activity:

Activity 1. The teacher will show the picture of a poetry “And Did Those Feet” by William Blake
(1827)

What moods are being felt in the poetry?


(10 min)
Activity 2. Group Activity:

The teacher will play


“Parsifal” by Richard Wagner and “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini”. Ask the students to listen and
compare the two musical pieces.

(15min)

A. Analysis:
1. What moods are being felt in the poetry?
2. If you are going to make this as a musical play, what will be the scene?
3. If you will put a music in it, what should be the mood?
4. Describe each piece in your point of view.
5. Give the characteristics and form of the two compositions.
6. How do they differ? What are their similarities?

B. Abstraction:
The teacher will discuss about the opera and life and works of Giacomo Puccini and Richard
Wagner of romantic period through a PowerPoint presentation and will play examples.
(15min)

The teacher will discuss the lifes and works of the opera composers under the vocal music. The
teacher will also explain the forms and teathrical elements of an opera. (15 min)

C. Application:
1. Group Activity:

Since the common purpose of vocal music of romantic period are the interpretation of the
poems, atmosphere and imagery into music through art song. This period require singers to
perform a greater range of tone, color, dynamics and pitch.
The students will sing the “Tosca”
The students will be asked:
What did you feel in singing the opera music?
What mood did you expressed in the presentation?

2. Group Activity:

Each group will recieve a task card which contains the activity that they need to perform
Group A – Watch and listen to the La Boheme Act 1 and sing it.
Group B – Sing and perform the excerpt of Turandot.
Group C – Narrates the plot, musical and theatrical elements of La Boheme Act 1 and excerpt of
Turandot.
Group D – Creates / improvises appropriate sounds, music, gestures, movements, and
costumes of the chosen opera
