Introduction
 The ever-increasing energy consumption, fossil
fuels soaring costs and worsening global
environment have created a booming interest in
the development of environmentally friendly
Distributedenergy resources(DERs)

 Most DERs usually supply a dc voltage that

varies in a wide range according to various load
conditions
Literature Review

 A dc/ac power processing interface is required

 Multilevel inverters can be efficiently used in the

distributed energy systems.
Advantages of Multilevel inverters

 Nearly sinusoidal output-voltage waveforms

 Better harmonic profile

 Switching losses that are lower than those of

conventional two-level inverters

 A smaller filter size

Types of Multilevel inverters
 Diode clamped inverter

 Flying capacitor inverter

 Cascaded H-bridge inverter

 Among these three, cascaded H-bridge requires

least number of components
Cascaded H-bridge inverter
• 2n+1 voltage levels , 4n switches ,where n is
number of H bridges HVDC Line
• 5 voltage levels, 8 switches
• 7 voltage levels , 12 switches

• 9 voltage levels , 16 switches

Disadvantages of Cascaded H-bridge
inverters
• To increase the number of output voltage levels, we
should increase number of H bridges.

• Hence switching devices are increased which

makes a multilevel inverter more complicated.
Proposed inverter

 Multilevel inverter with small number of switching

devices.

 The number of gate driving circuits are reduced,

hence size is reduced.

 The harmonics of the output voltage waveform are

also reduced.
