Description
GPRS Metering and Monitoring System
All the other common, viable and conventional communication systems cannot afford us a real time
connection. For e.g., in the PSTN line connection, we need to dial the number first (called server
calling), establish a connection and then communicate. Since this method is not always online this
is not suitable for real time applications. On the other hand, GPRS system is an Always-online
system and client calling system (as against server calling system). The meters are always online
and connected to the server, and can be communicated with at any time and in real time. Meters
can transmit data to the BCS (Base Computer Station) automatically. In case of errors in any meter,
an alarm can be raised by the meter to the BCS automatically. The meters find the BCS by
recording an IP address of the BCS in its SIM card (quite similar to an address used to access a
website on the Internet). The GPRS service provider (typically Mobile Phone Service Provider) will
charge on the quantum of data transfer and not on connection time. As of today, the GPRS system
can be considered the most advanced, fastest and cheapest system for remote monitoring of HT
meters.
Mode one---Always online: keep sending pulse signal to ensure online 24hours.The pulse signal
interval can be set by BCS depending on the condition of communication. If lose the
communication, the GPRS meter will keep trying to reconnect automatically. If communication
keeping failed for some time( preset the threshold), then the meter will only try to reconnect once a
day. At the same time, the meter will always wait for wake up by BCS.
Mode two---not always online: The meter will automaticaaly connect to the internet at the preset
time. Then send the fixed data back to BCS. If the real time operation is requried, the BCS can send
command to wakeup the meter by SMS or by GPRS data transfer.
GPRS data transfer: the GPRS data transfer service of the SIM card should be opened. When the
BCS dail to meter, the meter will connect to internet automatically.
SMS:the SMS service of the SIM card should be opened. When the BCS send the SMS to meter,
the meter will connect to internet automatically.
The System on the whole can be considered to be comprising of two parts – One the BCS and the
Other FXXC’s Three Phase Multifunction Energy Meter with GPRS Function – FD131. The structure of
the Whole System is shown in the Diagram below:

2. FD131 Hardware
FD131 is an advanced three-phase multi-function energy meter with GPRS communication. This
meter is based on the three-phase multi-function metering IC PL3223 and multi-function metering
SoC (System on Chip) PL3201 design of which we possess the Intellectual Property Rights.
Data-frozen function:
Energy data pertaining to a particular day and time of each month (programmable to any
day or time) can be frozen for purposes of billing and power consumption or line loss
analysis. Typically the billing date and time is the Data freezing time programmed in the
meter.
RTC:
Meter has Y2K compliant real time calendar and clock with automatic leap year
adjustment. This module operated with external Battery can be used for 10 years without
replacement of the battery.
Calibration:
Active energy impulse output for calibration, sampling and verification. This port is
passive isolated.
Communication:
Infra-Red LED Port, GPRS and RS485
Display:
• LCD with 8 digits, 2 decimal places
• Auto scroll display (display hold time 4 seconds)
• Parameters to be auto scrolled can be set using the Hand Held Meter Reading Device
(IR PDA)
• Typical parameters
- date
- time
- meter ID
- meter constant,
- positive/reverse active total energy,
- reactive energy in four quadrants,
- phase voltage/current,
- power,
- maximum demand
• Continuously displayed when the power is on for testing purposes
• Push button for Manual scrolling of the parameters.
• Supports 12 TODs and 4 Tariffs
Data storage:
User can remote set the data save items via GPRS. The meter has a large memory in-built
memory. Even if the all the data items listed under the next section (3.1.1) is stored on
hourly basis the data pertaining to more than One month can be stored. Maximum
memory capacity is frozen data for 20 months. The data is retained in non-volatile
memory and guaranteed retention is 10 years at the minimum even if the meter is
powered up. More data can be stored in the Data Base in the Base Computer Station.
3. Communication
FXXC® GPRS System
Description
GPRS Metering and Monitoring System
FD131 supports GPRS, RS485 and IR communication. GPRS is for remote AMR, setting parameters
and monitoring operation status. It can raise alarm to the BCS’s SMS alarm system as soon as any
Fault event occurs. IR is mainly used for setting meter parameters and reading data locally. RS485
again is for local area multi-drop networking connection.
3.1. GPRS
3.1.1. AMR function:
The system can read the periodic data (It is saved in the meter every hour or every
certain time as pre-set), frozen data and even roll call real-time data.
Periodic Time data:
Total positive/reverse active energy
Positive/reverse active energy in 4 tariffs
Reactive energy in four quadrants
Loss voltage accumulate time in each phases
Total loss voltage accumulate time
Instantaneous voltage/current in each phase
Instantaneous power
Voltage unbalanced threshold
Loss voltage threshold
Meter constant
Date and time
Data-frozen date
Frozen data:
Total positive/reverse active energy of last month
Reactive energy in four quadrants of last month
Maximum demand of last month and time record
Roll call data:
Recent total positive/reverse active energy(or in four tariffs)
Recent reactive energy in four quadrants
Loss voltage accumulate time in each phases
Total loss voltage accumulate time
Instantaneous voltage/current in each phase
Instantaneous power
Voltage unbalanced threshold
Loss voltage threshold
meter constant
Date and time
Data-frozen date
Total positive/reverse active energy of last month
Reactive energy in four quadrants of last month
Maximum demand of last month and time record
The meter will alarm to the BCS via SMS or GPRS when Fault event happens. Events
include:
Meter casing(enclosure) open
Internal communication fault (between measuring unit and GPRS unit)
Loss of Voltage/Current
Incorrect Phase sequence
Any parameters reverse
Low battery
Phase voltage/current imbalance
When the alarm is sent via SMS, the signal will be sent from the meter to SIM card
of the SMS alarm computer in BCS directly. If the GPRS alarm is used, the alarm
signal will be sent to Meter reading front-end computer via internet.
