Revised Thesis: Some may say that golf is a boring game to watch and play bring nothing but

wasted water and land, however, golf can improve mental, physical and social health as well as

help businessmen/women excel in their career.

“Golf Networking.” "FORE" Business, FORE-Business,

www.fore-business.com/golf-networking.

¨FORE¨ Business is a club for business owners and other people in the business world

who have a love for golf and love to network. FORE Business makes it easier to connect with

like minded people, and the article that FORE Business published is all about why golf is a great

networking tool. Networking is essential to building and maintaining strong relationships, and

the golf course is where a lot of this can take place. Networking is the reason FORE-business

was founded by Sean Fergusson and Arron Busst. Playing golf allows people to build

relationships outside of the office while having fun and the focus isn’t solely on business.

Playing a round of golf with someone allows a more personal relationship. It is better to conduct

business with someone you know and trust. Golf is a time consuming sport, which allows people

to talk while setting their tee or having a drink after the 18th hole. More talking can happen on
Wood 2

the golf course than during a formal networking session because these formal gatherings are

usually rushed and can turn into a “speed dating session”. Golf caters to every skill level because

of the handicap system. Even though there will be a hint of competitiveness between the people

in your group, that is not the reason why you are playing in the first place. You are there to get

that opportunity to talk with potential clients and associates because they are essential to your

business.

There is no date on this article and no information on the authors. I am assuming that the

founders of this company (Sean Fergusson and Arron Busst) wrote this article around 2013 or

2014 because of the copyright date on the website. This article may not be all that reliable, but

Fergusson and Busst seem to be knowledgeable on the topic of golf networking. After all, that is

why they started FORE Business in the first place, but there really is no information on the

internet on Fergusson and Busst so overall, there is not enough information about the source

making it unreliable.

Overall this article will help me with my research on why golf is so important to

business. This article has shown me why this method of networking is better than going to some

corporate formal networking session. This is because of the large amount of talk time that you

get while you are on the golf course. Other than the networking piece of this article, most of the

information I already knew about because of other sources I have found while researching.

Klusinske, Elizabeth, et al. “Why the Decline of Golf Is Good News for the Environment.”

Elizabeth Klusinske, is the author of an article published on Decoded Science where she

talks about how golf as a whole is generally bad for the environment, and that the decline in

interest of the game is good for the environment. She starts this article off by listing off why golf

is bad for the environment. She says that golf courses are mainly focused on how the course

plays and looks by keeping the grass short and perfect. Golf courses do this by spraying a lot of

herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and mowing frequently. There was a controversy in

the 1990s surrounding golf courses’ use of herbicides and pesticides were causing people to get

cancer. Even though the magazine Golf Digest recognizes courses that are environmentally

friendly, there really has not been much of a decrease in the use of herbicides and pesticides.

Most golf courses mow everyday in order to improve the quality of the turf on the course. This

causes a lot of fuel to be burnt because of how big golf courses are in terms of land area. Golf

course maintenance/building can result in deforestation and runoff/erosion. This can damage

wildlife and an ecosystem entirely. Out of control algae blooms can be a result of runoff which

can harm wildlife in streams or lakes. Elizabeth also shows what golf courses could be used for

instead. Golf courses take up over 1.5 million acres of land in the United States. Just letting the

land go and manage the quality of the course better would overall be beneficial to the

environment.

This article is not that outdated as it was published on October 12, 2014. This source is

reliable because the author, Elizabeth Klusinske has a Masters of Science in Atmospheric and

Oceanic Sciences. She also has a Air Resources Management Certificate. It seems that she is
Wood 4

very knowledgeable in the field of environmental science. Most of the article was based off of

facts and research so the information seems to be accurate and not solely opinion based.

Overall this article will help me in my research because it has shown me why golf is not

only beneficial to people, but mainly harmful to the environment. This article addresses the

counterclaim to my research paper and helps me understand the other side of the argument.

Horton, Helena. “Tee-Ed off: Golf Named the Most Boring Sport by the British Public.” The

Telegraph, Telegraph Media Group, 10 Jan. 2018,

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/01/10/tee-ed-golf-named-boring-sport-british-public/.

Helena Horton is the author of an article published on The Telegraph which talks about

how golf was voted the most boring sport by the British public. Horton says even though Britain

has over 2 million regular golfers, 70 percent of people in the UK who have watched the sport

said that it was boring. Women also find golf to be more boring when compared to men. Horton

continuously has quotes from others talking about how this should be a wakeup call for the golf

industry and that golf really needs to modernize in order to appeal to the audience. Horton also

brings up the point that golf isn’t for everyone and especially when it comes to spectating. This is

because golf is a slower paced game when compared to something such as football. The Chief

Executive of England Golf suggested that people might rather watch highlights and shorter clips

of a golf match. Diversifying programming/coverage of the sport might change people’s attitude

toward the sport for the better and might even increase the amount of players that regularly play.
Wood 5

This article is fairly up to date as it was published in January of 2018, but this source

does not seem to be all that reliable. There is very little information on Horton except other

articles that she has written in the past. She also doesn’t seem to be very knowledgeable in this

subject because she is really just posting snippets of other opinions. This article really only

highlighted quotes from other people and also showed some statistiques on the public’s opinion

of golf. Other than some statistics, there really wasn’t any other facts presented in the article.

Overall, this article will help me in my research because it shows the public’s view of

golf and how golf can change to have a better appeal to their audience. This article addresses a

counterclaim to my thesis and it helps me to see other’s opinions.

Garwood, Katie. “Why Golf Isn't Boring.” The Odyssey Online, Odyssey, 27 Aug. 2017,

www.theodysseyonline.com/why-golf-isnt-boring.

Katie Garwood is a golfer who wrote an argumentative article to show why golf is not a

boring sport. Garwood basically says that from the outside looking in, golf is seen as boring and

nothing but an old man sport, but how can you say something is boring without even trying it for

yourself. Golf is more than hitting a white ball in grass for hours, but rather a sport of

concentration and skill. Garwood states that even though golf can be frustrating, improving your

game is what it’s all about. That’s what keeps millions of people playing, and once you hit those

perfect shots, nothing feels better. She also brings up the point of golf being slow paced. Even

though it is slow paced, it allows a longer time of stress relief and getting away from the outside

world and overall just enjoying yourself and the outdoors. Golf also isn’t made to be played
Wood 6

alone, and it is even better playing with friends and family. You can make bets and even end the

round of golf with a free meal or some extra cash in your pocket.

Even though there is no information about Katie Garwood and the article is slightly

outdated, Garwood is a passionate golfer who argues a great point on why golf isn’t boring. This

article is all opinion based, but that is no issue because she brings up many great points

throughout the article. Garwood does a great job showing her voice and passion for golf in this

article which makes the points of her argument much greater. Since she is a golfer with years of

experience, she can really show the reader why golf is so much more than a old man’s sport.

Overall this article will help me in my research because it shows why golf is more than

just a boring sport. There is a lot more to it than hitting a ball on grass for hours on end, and it

addresses my thesis statement.
