Unit Title: The Relationship Between the Environment and Name: Monica Lu
Community Health
Content Area: Biology Grade Level: 9-10
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Next Generation Science Standards
HS-LS2-7. Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will understand the Gas Exchange Process of the Respiratory System. Students will learn about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Asthma. They will
explore and develop an understanding of how various sources of pollution affect the health and wellness of their local communities and members. Students will
construct possible solutions to minimize these impacts by writing and presenting to their local environmental agencies through presentations or videos.

 How is the Particulate Matter Pollution distributed across various areas within a community? What factors are contributing to the differences in the distribution
and concentration of pollution across different communities?
 How does Particulate Matter Pollution contribute to the development of Asthma?
 What are some ways we can minimize or reduce our exposures to these pollutions?

Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will learn about the relationship between the environment and the community health. We will be focusing on one of the most common respiratory
disease, Asthma. After learning more about Asthma, students will be surveying their family and community members to see how many people have Asthma. They will
then learn about air pollution and conduct an experiment to collect particulate matter across different areas within the community. After they study the distribution and
concentration of pollution across various locations, they will be creating a presentation to their local health agencies to help minimize the impacts of the pollution
source.

some observations. The lecture will end with checking for understanding with some provoking
