TUTORIAL PHOTOSHOP

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Photoshop Environment

1.2 Create New Files : Click File >> New


1.3 Saving Photoshop Files : Click File >> Save as

 PSD - native Photoshop format. Always save file as PSD BEFORE saving as JPG or GIF, or any
other file format.
1.4 Photoshop toolbox

1. Marquee Tool - used for selecting areas of an image


2. Move Tool - used for moving an image to a different area of the canvas
3. Lasso Tool - used for selecting areas of an image that may not necessarily be
comprised of straight lines
4. Magic Wand Tool - used for auto-selecting large areas of an image that are
similar in color
5. Crop Tool - used for reducing the image to a certain area ("cropping")
6. Slice Tool - used to "slice" an image into different sections; generally used for
the creation of images for a web page design
7. Healing Brush Tool - used to fix imperfections in an image by copying other
pixels from the image. The Healing Brush tool will also match the texture,
lighting, and shading to perfectly match the area you are fixing
8. Brush Tool - used with the mouse to simply draw lines on your image
9. Clone Stamp Tool - used to "clone" or copy one area of an image to another;
first hold "Alt" and click an area of the image to copy, then click on a different
area to copy it there
10. History Brush Tool - used to copy and draw a pre-existing image in different
artistic styles
11. Eraser Tool - used to erase certain areas of an image

12. Gradient Tool - used to create gradient fills for an image, of any color
13. Blur Tool - used to blur or blend areas of an image
14. Dodge Tool - used to uniquely adjust the brightness and contrast of an image
15. Path Selection Tool - used merge overlapping components into a single component
16. Type Tool - used to place text on an image
17. Pen Tool - used to draw lines and curves with better precision
18. Rectangle Tool - used to draw rectangles and other polygons
19. Notes Tool - used to leave notes for yourself on your image
20. Eyedropper Tool - used to select and match specific colors
21. Hand Tool - used to quickly view different areas of an image
22. Zoom Tool - used to zoom in and out of an image
23. Set Foreground / Background Color - used to set the foreground (front) and background (back) colors of an
image; can also be used to change the colors of text, etc. Click on the boxes to change the colors (a new
window will appear).
24. Edit Modes - used to switch back and forth between modes
25. Switch Screen Modes - used to switch between full screen and standard screen modes
26. Jump to ImageReady - used to easily launch the ImageReady program
1.5 Layers : Select Layer >> New Layer

 Layers are a primary concept in Photoshop


 They allow different elements of the document to be manipulated separately
 Think of them as transparent sheets, one on top of the other
 Layers are controlled by the Layer Palette
2.0 Working with Text : Click Text tool

2.1 Adding effects to texts and layers

 Go to Layer >> Layer Style >> Blending Options on the file menu
 Choose the effect(s) you wish to apply – you must click on the actual name of the effect
to see its options
 Set options if desired, then click OK to apply
3.0 Insert Image : File >> Open >> Choose Image

2.1 Cropping an Image

There are several ways to crop images in Adobe Photoshop:

 Cropping with the Crop Tool


 Cropping to a specific size
 Cropping with the Marquee Tool

2.1.1 Cropping with the Crop Tool

The Crop Tool allows you to make a precise selection of an image you wish to edit. To crop with the
Crop Tool, follow these steps:

1. Open the image you wish to crop.


2. Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox.
3. Click on your image once and drag the mouse out to make a cropping border
4. Resize the border by dragging the squares at the sides and corners till you are satisfied with the
way your image looks.

NOTE: You can also rotate your cropping border. Move the cursor outside the border, you will see
how it turns into a double-headed arrow. Drag the arrows in the directions you wish to rotate your
selection.

5. Once you are completely satisfied with your cropped image, press ENTER.
2.1.2 Cropping with a specific size

To crop an image to a specific size, do the following:

1. Open the image you wish to crop.


2. Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox.
3. In the Options bar, specify the values for Width and Height
4. 4. Click in your image and drag the cropping border. Notice that the border is constrained -
you cannot make it wider or longer than the specified values.
5. 5. Once you are completely satisfied with your cropped image, press ENTER.

2.1.3 Cropping with a marquee tool

To crop with the Marquee Tool, follow the steps below:

1. Open the image you wish to crop.


2. Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Toolbox.
3. Click in your image and drag the mouse to draw a marquee around the area you wish to crop
2.2 Resize an image

To resize the digital photos without losing the quality, follow these steps:

1. Open the digital photo you wish to resize.


2. In the main menu, go to Image > Image Size.
3. In the Image Size dialog box, check the Resample Image box off. Type in your desired
resolution.

To enlarge the image without losing the quality, you need to make sure the Resample Image box is
checked off and choose Bicubic Smoother from the dropdown box
3.0 Quick Selection Tool

1. Choose Quick Selection Tool from Toolbox (make sure click on Add Selection Tool)
2. Select certain area on that particular image (example : a single person)
3. You may use Subtract Selection Tool to adjust some of the area. And for the details, you
need to set a smaller brush size
4. Next, click Refine Edge button for a smoother selection.
5. After the adjustment, click OK.
6. To separate the selection area, open new file and drag the area onto that file.
3.1 Instagram (Vintage) picture

1. First, choose picture with high brightness and contrast


2. Next, add new layer and fill with blue color (#1f1b62). Change layer bland from normal to
Lighten and opacity 70%.
3. Add second layer and fill with yellow color (#fff79d). Change layer bland from normal to
Multiply and opacity 70%.
4. Add another layer and fill with black color (#353533). Change layer bland from normal to
Multiply with opacity 20%.
3.2 Lighten picture

To lighten a dull picture

1. Choose picture
2. Click Filter >> Sharpen >> Sharpen
3. Next, duplicate layer background and change to layer bland from normal to Soft Light.
4. Duplicate another layer and click Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur (set to 10 pixels). Change
layer bland mode Soft Light to Overlay with 20% opacity
5. Duplicate another layer and change layer bland mode from Overlay to Color dodge with 20%
opacity
3.3 Make a rainbow effect picture

1. Choose a lighthouse picture


2. Change paint tool to gradient tool
3. Choose rainbow layer, third type and lighten mode with 40% opacity
4. Then, place the tool onto the picture
4.0 Superimpose a picture in text

1. Choose picture
2. Write text onto the picture
3. Go to layer style and select drop shadow
4. Then, choose Blend Mode - Multiply. Opacity - 50%. Angle - 120. Use Global Light - ticked.
Distance - 5px. Spread - 0. Size - 5px. Click on OK.
5. Duplicate background layer.
6. Now press on Alt with left hand. Drag your mouse with right hand in between both the
layers. A black and half white circle will come between the layers. And click on this circle.
7. The background copy will have an arrow pointing downwards to the text.
8. Now remove the eye icon for layer 1 to make it invisible. See the magic. The text has taken
the texture of the picture you have placed.
5.0 Lens blur picture

1. Choose photo
2. Duplicate layer background
3. Choose Quick Selection Tool. Highlight certain area with that tool (may use Add and Subtract
selection tool)
4. Next, invert the selection. Select >> Invert
5. Click icon add layer mask
6. Click on thumbnail layer. Then click Filter >> Blur >> Lens blur. Set Source: Layer Mask.
Radius: 20. Specular Highlights: Brightness 45 & Threshold: 220. Click OK
6.0 Brush bokeh

1. Choose photo (preferably night photo with lights)


2. Use menu File >> Place to set picture as Smart Object
3. Apply Filter >> Gaussian blur with radius 5 pixels
4. Then, it will appear Smart Filter format under Smart Object layer. Click on Smart Filter
5. Choose brush tool and set as black colour
6. Use brush tool on selected area which at the foreground picture. This will make that area
looks sharp as before
7. Use brush tool once again and choose hard round
8. Next, click Window >> Brush.
9. Set brush tip shape : Size 50px, hardness 80%, spacing 250
10. Set shape dynamics : Size Jitter 50
11. Set scattering : Scatter 500%
12. Set color dynamics : Hue Jitter 50% and Brightness Jitter 15%
13. Set wet edges
14. Click new brush button and rename as Bokeh Brush
15. Make a new layer and change blend mode layer as Overlay
16. Choose Brush Tool that have been save as Bokeh Brush and apply onto this new layer
