OBJECTIVES/ • Students will be able to:

OUTCOMES  Define a want and a need
 Explain why something is a need
 Identify various Wants and Needs

Entire class:
GROUP SIZE
& MATERIALS Smartboard
Chart paper with pictures
Worksheet
Needs (yellow) and Wants (pink) Index cards
TIME LESSON
Introduction:
~ 10
minutes On the circle mat:
- On a chart paper, have various images of objects.
-Play a game of “I spy with my little eye”. I will describe an object and
students will need to guess which picture I am describing.
- Expectations:
* Raise hand
* Do not shout out the answer

For example:
“I spy with my little eye, something that helps me get better when I am sick.”
(medication)
or
“I spy with my little eye something that is sweet and that children love”.
(candies)

Do 3 – 5.

- Tell students that the objects in the picture can be sorted as things
we either need or things that we want. (Show them a cue card with
the words written on them and have them repeat the words Needs
and Wants).

- I will define both words for them:

Needs: A need is something that you must have to stay alive or stay
healthy and safe.
Wants: A want is something that you would like to have and enjoy
but can live without it.

- Give students one example of something that is a need from the

pictures and something that is a want from the pictures and explain
why it might be a need or a want.

For example: Medication is a need because you need to take it when you
are sick to cure your sickness and become healthy.

Candies are a want because it is something that many people enjoy eating
but don’t need to stay alive.

- Ask students: Why do you think it might be important to tell the

difference between our needs and wants?
TIME LESSON

- Send students one by one back to their desks.

Development:

12 Part 1:
minutes
- Show students a video about needs and wants on Brainpop. (4 min)
- Students will be handed out two set of index cards in different colors
(Yellow for Needs and pink for wants)
- I will explain to them that I will show them some pictures on the
Smartboard and they will have to hold up one of the cards based on
if they think it represents a need or a want. Tell them to raise their
card only after I have counted up to 3.
- Do one example together to make sure students know which card
represents needs and wants.
- Show 5-10 examples (adjust according to flow).
- After certain images, pick a student to explain why the image
represents a need or a want.

10 – 15 Part 2: Individual work

minutes - Explain the work to students (displayed on the Smartboard). First,
they need to sort different pictures in either a needs or wants
category. Then, they need to write one thing they need and explain
why and write/draw one thing they want but don’t need.
- Brainstorm students wants on the Smartboard.
- Remind students they can use their personal word wall if they need
help spelling a word or they can try to sound out the word to spell it.
- Tell students that if they are done or have questions, they should
stay in their seat and raise their hand and wait until I come and see
them.
- Put sound meter to whisper voice.
