EXPLAIN
Observation is one of the greatest powers in the
universe

Hi kids, today we will learn how to find the product

of fractions. You have already learned about
fractions. Now, we will learn how to multiply them.

1. Multiplication of Fractions
When multiplying fractions, we just multiply the
numerators, and multiply the denominators.

EXAMPLE

Remember to simplify your answers!

We can easier simplify answers by already cancelling the

common factors in the numerator and denominator before
REMEMBER multiplying. This will also make the numbers you need to
simplify smaller.

EXAMPLE

1 4 1 1

3 5 1 2

Note how we can factor more than one common factor as

long as both numerator and denominator have the factor.

Remember that if both numerators, or both denominators,

have a common factor, we cannot cancel it.

EXAMPLE

6 = 2 x 3, but we only
Nothing to cancel 3 because 2 is
cancel here! in the numerator, with
6.

• To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators of the factors, and

multiply the denominators of the factors.
• We can multiply easier by cancelling out common factors from
SUMMARY
the numerator and denominator before multiplying.

Hi kids, today we will learn how to find the quotient

of fractions. You have already learned how to
multiply fractions, and you know that division is the
opposite of multiplication. Now, we will learn how
to divide fractions.

1. Division of Fractions
A reciprocal is what you get when you exchange the
numbers in the numerator and denominator.

EXAMPLE

To divide fractions, multiply the dividend by the reciprocal

of the divisor.

EXAMPLE

We can check our answers to division by multiplying our

answer and the divisor. We should get the dividend.

1 5 9

In the same way that we simplified multiplication problems

by cancelling common factors, we can still do that when
REMEMBER dividing.

• To divide fractions, multiply the dividend by the

reciprocal of the divisor. Cancel as needed.
• We can check if the quotients are correct by multiplying
SUMMARY the quotient and the divisor.
