What is
Collective
Intelligence?

Collective intelligence is the idea and information that

is brought together when a group collaborates
effectively. It is the emphasis that a groups'
intelligence when brought together will have a better
productive outcome then a person who works
individually (Gregg, 2010). Collective intelligence is
greatly enhanced with the group working together by
contributing information and ideas. With the new
digital platforms and skills needed for the 21st century
learner, collective intelligence can be facilitated
through online collaboration. Building technology
skills requires students to be able to develop
strategies for the enrichment of collective and social
interaction (Josep & Jaime, 2015). Imagine a group of
people coming together from all over the world or just
within a classroom, to share and add information to
create something useful and to improve student
learning.
Strategies for Collective
Intelligence
Utilizing different strategies to engage students, foster
learning and to incorporate collective intelligence is
very important. A useful strategy is grouping students
by limiting the size of the group and giving each
person a role and task to complete. Each student will
collaborate and work together to complete the task.
Making sure that students understand and are aware
of the goal or task, encourages them to complete their
part. In addition, giving feedback is necessary for
students to know what is expected of them when
working collectively together (Scalise, 2016).
Furthermore, a rubric, assessment or evaluation is
necessary for students to understand what is required
of them (Scalise, 2016).
Jigsaw strategy
A strategy that incorporates cooperative
learning is the Jigsaw Strategy. In this strategy,
students become the expert and must research
information to share with another group. Watch
a video that illustrates how to incorporate this
strategy within the classroom. This strategy can
be used with or without technology. This
strategy can be taken even further by having
students research information on the internet
and then shared via Google docs, classroom
blog or web page.
Why is Collective
Intelligence so Important?
Collective intelligence is important because it allows
students to socially collaborate and share information. It is
giving students the opportunity to interact and learn
through social networks which advances the experience
and engagement for the student to be effective while
collaborating in the 21st century (Scalise, 2016). Teachers
should bring together students and utilize applications to
support interaction, shared decision making and to
improve understanding that is beneficial for greater group
effectiveness (Gregg, 2010). Collective intelligence will
have a great impact on student learning but will also
require the need for new content and routines (Jaime,
Josep, Franscisca, & Alex, 2016).

Resources for an Effective

Learning Environment
To encourage collaboration in the classroom while
using technology, teachers can incorporate tools that
allow students to interact with each other. To build and
foster collaboration in the classroom, these resources
can be used:
Mural
WikiSpaces
Google Drive or Docs
Schooltube
Story Wars
Weebly to create a blog
One tool that many teachers may already have access
to, is the Google docs that is located in the Google
Drive. This application can be utilized to allow
students to work collaboratively together to develop
a story or to research and share the information in
one document. Students can work together to
develop the ideas, information and format the
document while collaborating interactively.

Another tool is Wikispaces. Here is a tutorial on

how to create and use Wikispaces in the
classroom:
