Effective Communication and Collaboration: PLC Meeting

January 29, 2019

7th Grade English PLC Meeting

 Discussion about A Long Walk to Water and other ideas about the upcoming unit

 Ms. Correia (cooperating teacher) is the department head and had an ample amount of

teaching resources.

 Book resources: limited number

o Advanced classes can take books home, but other classes cannot

o Potentially 2 chapters in class and 1 at home??? (audio book for non-advanced

classes)

 Unit tests as a summative assessment (comprehension, inferencing, vocab, etc.)

 I suggested that reading checks should be used as warm-ups for all classes since all

classes can access the audio book to read at home

o An easy way to check if students are keeping up with the reading and check basic

comprehension

 Vocab ideas

o I suggested using the vocabulary slides in a different way than just having the

student write down the meanings of words, but unsure how to do this

o I also suggested a reader’s dictionary in a bookmark form so that students can

write down words they do not understand, or they find interesting while reading

 Pre-reading activities to help connect the students to the story

o Imagine a scenario
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION 3

o I suggested a pre-reading activity involving context and geographical information

would be helpful

 Ms. Correia has copies of a Junior Scholastic article about Sudan that we

can use

 Another summative assessment could be a short essay about novel’s theme of

perseverance

 I suggested stations so that kids can stay engaged through different activities

o Study guide has great discussion questions for this kind of format

 Ms. Correia wants advanced to do literature circles because they will be doing that later

in the year

 Reflection ideas??

o Reading guides

 Graphic organizers for plot diagrams and character mapping

 I suggested maybe doing an end of unit jeopardy that reviews the entire novel

 I need to do more brainstorming about how to approach this novel and the best ways for

the students to stay engaged

o Positive reinforcement has so far been the best way to keep 7th graders engaged
