CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

North Carolina (NC) is a state that receives federal funding and, as such, must

adhere to the No Child Left Behind Act assessment requirement. The North Carolina

Standard Course of Study (2004) provides every content area a set of competencies for

each K-12 course. The intent of this standard is to ensure rigorous student academic

performance standards that are uniform across the state. The basis for this standard is

a philosophy of teaching and learning that is consistent with current research, exemplary

practices and national standards.

However, Hasan (2003) showed that certain computer experiences had varying

levels of impact on a person’s perceived computer self-efficacy. Hasan’s research

showed that experience with computer programming and graphics applications have

strong and significant effects on computer self-efficacy beliefs while spreadsheet and

database applications demonstrated weak effects.

This research will concentrate on computer self-efficacy as it pertains to specific

tasks in word processing, presentation graphics, and spreadsheet applications.

Moreover, Hassel bring et al. (2000) in his study ‘Technology to support teacher

development’ had shown that improving the quality of an education system depends upon

teachers’ training and development. He argues that teachers should be trained to view

ICT as a resource and to use technology in classroom activities, whilst earlier added that

education authorities are responsible for teacher trailing.


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What is the level of proficiency of students on the basic skills of software

application in Computer Programming class?

2. What is the level of performance of computer programming class using the

selected software application as proceed by the respondents?

3. what is the significant difference among the perception of students on their level

of performance who have prior knowledge with those have background

knowledge?

NULL HYPOTHESIS

1. There is no significant difference on the proficiency of both group of student-

respondents on the basic skills in the selected software applications

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The main purpose of the study is to determine on how the students deal to the

track they have chosen which is computer programming and the students who have the

prior knowledge to the particular track are actives in terms of discussion compared to

those students doesn't have any prior knowledge.

The researchers will conduct a survey to 60 male and female Grade 11 CP

students using random sampling in Antipolo City Senior High School, SY 2018-2019. The

students will be randomly selected from three different sections equally to avoid bias.
