Quarter I Reflection

After the end of English 12, Unit 1, I have learnt quite a lot in area of literature skills
like annotating and analysis. In the first unit, teacher choose William Carlos Williams as our
mentor because he is a good example of modern poetry so we spend almost entire time
studying William Carlos Williams’ poems and the connection to modernism by annotating
his poem, doing TIQA about his poems, creating pastiches and write the reflection about it.
During the time I studied poetry, I find that some the tasks given by the teacher is quite
enjoyable. What I enjoyed the most would be writing pastiches because it is independent and
imaginative. I have fun to spend my time practicing my creative skill on pastiches, it also
encourage me to explore new words that seem unfamiliar helping me decrease limitation of
vocabulary. Although writing pastiche is quite fun but writing its reflection is not that easy. I
have hard time writing about reflection which give me tasks to write about the connection the
William’s poem, the literature devices and the theme that we share together. I find it’s hard
because the direction insist me to write full page of detail but there are not that much to write
about. For example, in “The Red Wheelbarrow”, it seem to be a plenty of problems to write
the reflection for my mimicked pastiche. The problem I found is that the poem is too short
and the detail is very objective. It seem to be that there are no hidden meaning within the
poem, it’s seem too abstract and non-sense to me like they are no point this work at all. For
that reason, I think it’s hard to fulfill all of the reflection up to one page. Another thing that
challenge me is to write TIQA of some poem. The same problem occur that some of the
poem I did TIQA about is too objective and quite neutral because it is not illustrate any
deeper meanings more than what it appear in the poem. However, some of the proudest
accomplishment I’ve made in this unit is the TIQA of “To a Poor Old Woman” because I got
full score for the first time since the beginning of English 12 class, due to my deeply
understanding of meaning of the poem unlike other poem that quite problematic to me
because I only understand superficially. Now I am more interested in learning African culture
in order to be more comprehensive in the novel I currently study; “Things fall apart”. For the
progression, I believe that I have improved analysing the most. I think that I’m more capable
in finding the meaning of the poem and I develope of using synonym and variety of the
words appropriate to the context of the sentence which is can be useful in the future like
writing exams. I think 3 pieces that show my progression in unit 1 is the TIQA of “Willow
Poem”, “Danse Russe” and “To a Poor Old Woman”.
