Lesson Plan for Jazz Band 4/24/19

Objectives
1. Students will review “Decoupage”
2. Students will focus their parts in “Feeling Good” and how they relate to the lead vocalist.

Standards Addressed
HIAD.13 The student will demonstrate, describe, and analyze ensemble skills at an
advanced level, including
1. balancing and blending instrumental timbres;
2. making adjustments to facilitate correct intonation;
3. matching dynamic levels and playing style;
4. responding to advanced conducting patterns and gestures;
5. demonstrating conducting patterns and gestures; and
6. maintaining a steady beat at various tempos and performing tempo changes in
the music literature being studied.

HIAD.15 The student will demonstrate the use of articulations, dynamic contrasts,
phrasing, various tempos, and tempo changes as means of expression

Procedures
1. Students will come into class, get set up, and begin warming up on their own.
2. The saxophone section will run through their soli in “Decoupage”.
3. Students will run through “Decoupage”.
4. Students will work on “Feeling Good” in sections focusing on
a. Not covering up the vocalist
b. Correct articulations
c. Not overplaying the shout sections
d. Changing the feel of the tune with every verse
e. Matching the vocalist’s style at m.56
f. Melodic variation with every verse (vocalist only)

Assessment
1. Students will be formally assessed on attendance and bringing all necessary materials.
2. Students will be informally assessed on participation throughout rehearsal
