2nd Grade Music

Pg. 16
 Teacher sings “Poor Little Kitty Cat” with piano.
 Discuss text (what happens in the song?); echo one measure at a time
 Present a percussion instrument
o Teacher sings, “kitty cat, where are you?” followed by written rhythm on the
instrument
o Repeat the above with class singing, “Kitty cat, where are you?”
o Repeat, with a student playing the instrument
 GAME:
o With an instrument place in each corner of the room, class sits in a circle with one
student closing their eyes in the center. During the song another student moves to
one of the four instruments. After the song, the class sings, “kitty cat, where are
you?” followed by the student at the instrument playing the rhythm. The center
student points to the source of the sound. Choose new students and the game
continues
 Optional: Use four different instruments, and the center student has to
identify the instrument before opening their eyes

Pg. 17
 Sing the first verse of “Jockey” for the class, inviting them to join when comfortable.
 Sing second verse.
 Everyone makes a circle while standing
 GAME:
o One student gallops around the inside of the circle while class pats the pulse. All
sing first verse and on “Riding on a pony” the galloper stops in front a partner.
During the second voice they joins hands and perform the bleking step (or
something similar) while class claps the pulse. On “Riding on a pony,” partners
swing right elbows. Game continues and student chosen as partner becomes the
new galloper.

Pg. 31/34
 Sing “All ‘Round the Brickyard” and explore different movements (step it, skip it, jump
it, tip-toe, etc.)
 Substitute the text for the second phrase: “I’m going to play it on an instrument and
remember me.”
 Demonstrate playing seven beats on a percussion instrument
 One group at a time, allow students to play instruments
 Change the verses to play with the instrument by different timbre.
o “I’m going to play it on a guiro and remember me.”
o “I’m going to play it on a maraca and remember me.”
o “I’m going to play it on a triangle and remember me.”

Pg. 22
 Echo text to verse one of “Three Little Muffins”, speaking quietly when echoing the
second phrase
 Combine phrases to verse one
 Add suggested body percussion
 Add additional verses and coda, speaking loudly when echoing the coda
 Introduce and label the musical symbols forte and piano; defining the mas loud and quite.
 Ask the class which part of the poem is forte (“What…no muffins?”) and which part is
piano (“You know the kind with the honey and the nuts on top.”)

Pg. 33 For the end of class/for fun

 Teach “You’re a Grand Old Flag”
o Although the text will be challenging for second grade students, children need to
build a repertoire of patriotic songs. Once introduced, review vocal repertoire
when time allows.
