Through this letter, I want to present some of my reasons and motivations after being

elected to participate in the exchange program from UPH and to select the department
I am interested at. My name is Evelyn Franca, a 5th semester medical student.
Studying medicine and becoming a doctor is an ambition of mine that i’ve been
having since i was a little girl. After I entered the medical school at UPH, I have been
able to learn a lot and start to understand every field of medical science. Until now,
because of everything that i got from university, i have always considered to take a
specialist study after finishing medical study as general practitioner. I live in an
environment where both my parents are doctors. My dad is a surgeon especially in the
field of digestion (Gastrointestinal Surgeon) and my mother is a general practitioner.
Since i was a child, I always see how my mom and dad work. See how they help and
cure patients through treatment or even through surgery. Ever since then i always was
interested in the field. I think surgery is a very risky method and not all doctors can do
it well. To be able to perform these actions, we as a general practitioner will have to
learn and take a deeper specialist field.

From every experience I saw, makes me even more and more determined to follow
my parent’s path. I became drawn and motivated to find out more in the field of
surgery. I think as doctor, I should not only be able to treat patients only by giving
medicine, but i also want to experience the ability to perform a certain action/method
to help and cure the patient.

My first choice was the general surgery department. I chose this department because I
saw my initial goal of becoming a surgeon. Many things about surgery that I have not
known or learned, and during my study now in UPH, the knowledge of surgical
course has not much been given. I'm sure that this department is the first step into
being able to get and collect new knowledges and experiences in the field I'm
interested at. I believe that later on i will be able to understand more on how to
become a surgeon.

The reason that i’m interested in general surgery is because it’s a “general” education
and in my opinion this department offer so many divers methods in doing operation
for various diseases and not only focusing in one area. I believe that i can learn many
things and not only just certain action for certain disease, but also the knowledge of
other procedures.

the other reason why i am interested in the field is because the need of surgeons in my
own country, Indonesia. A surgeon is an occupation that is still not that often or
popular. I see that in some years many hospitals here will still need a lot of surgeons.
So through this exchange program i have the opportunity to get the inside of this
department I will be able to know what other development regarding surgeries that is
currently happening in other country and not yet in mine. I am so excited to learn the
differences of the development of surgeries in other country. And the last reason is
because i’ve been considering to continue my study abroad later on and through this
program i’ll be able to see how people do things differently, outside my country, and i
believe that it would help me to make me an even more open-minded person, which
will help me in my future
